  • IceCube search for neutrinos from GRB 221009A
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference (ICRC 2023). - : Sissa Medialab Srl.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  GRB 221009A is the brightest Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) ever observed. The observed extremelyhigh flux of high and very-high-energy photons provide a unique opportunity to probe the predictedneutrino counterpart to the electromagnetic emission. We have used a variety of methods to searchfor neutrinos in coincidence with the GRB over several time windows during the precursor, promptand afterglow phases of the GRB. MeV scale neutrinos are studied using photo-multiplier ratescalers which are normally used to search for galactic core-collapse supernovae neutrinos. GeVneutrinos are searched starting with DeepCore triggers. These events don’t have directionallocalization, but instead can indicate an excess in the rate of events. 10 GeV - 1 TeV and >TeVneutrinos are searched using traditional neutrino point source methods which take into accountthe direction and time of events with DeepCore and the entire IceCube detector respectively. The>TeV results include both a fast-response analysis conducted by IceCube in real-time with timewindows of T0 − 1 to T0 + 2 hours and T0 ± 1 day around the time of GRB 221009A, as well asan offline analysis with 3 new time windows up to a time window of T0 − 1 to T0 + 14 days, thelongest time period we consider. The combination of observations by IceCube covers 9 ordersof magnitude in neutrino energy, from MeV to PeV, placing upper limits across the range forpredicted neutrino emission.

  • The large enriched germanium experiment for neutrinoless double beta decay (LEGEND)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : Author(s). - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. ; 1894
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) would show that lepton number is violated, reveal that neu-trinos are Majorana particles, and provide information on neutrino mass. A discovery-capable experiment covering the inverted ordering region, with effective Majorana neutrino masses of 15 - 50 meV, will require a tonne-scale experiment with excellent energy resolution and extremely low backgrounds, at the level of ∼0.1 count /(FWHM·t·yr) in the region of the signal. The current generation 76Ge experiments GERDA and the Majorana Demonstrator, utilizing high purity Germanium detectors with an intrinsic energy resolution of 0.12%, have achieved the lowest backgrounds by over an order of magnitude in the 0νββ signal region of all 0νββ experiments. Building on this success, the LEGEND collaboration has been formed to pursue a tonne-scale 76Ge experiment. The collaboration aims to develop a phased 0νββ experimental program with discovery potential at a half-life approaching or at 1028 years, using existing resources as appropriate to expedite physics results.

  • Impact of ICRF fast-ions on core turbulence and MHD activity in ASDEX upgrade
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 24th Topical Conference On Radio-Frequency Power In Plasmas. - : AIP Publishing.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experiments in various tokamaks and their analysis identify the fast ions (FI) generated by NBI and/or ICRF heating as one of the main causes of the observed improvement in core confinement: fast ions can reduce core microturbulence (mainly Ion-Temperature-Gradient (ITG) driven modes) either electrostatically or electromagnetically, or they can resonate with fishbones and high-frequency Alfvén modes, which in turn contribute in stabilizing ITG. In this perspective, we discuss recent experiments done on ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) where ICRF is the main actuator for FI generation for energies above 100 keV. Additionally, ICRF-FIs can substantially impact the MHD activity and its consequent effects on fast ion losses (FILs) and ion-cyclotron emission (ICE). We present dedicated AUG experiments with NBI-D further accelerated by ICRF.

  • A Proposal for the Classification of Methods for Verification and Validation of Safety, Cybersecurity, and Privacy of Automated Systems
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 14th International Conference on the Quality of Information and Communications Technology (QUATIC 2021).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As our dependence on automated systems grows, so does the need for guaranteeing their safety, cybersecurity, and privacy (SCP). Dedicated methods for verification and validation (V&V) must be used to this end and it is necessary that the methods and their characteristics can be clearly differentiated. This can be achieved via method classifications. However, we have experienced that existing classifications are not suitable to categorise V&V methods for SCP of automated systems. They do not pay enough attention to the distinguishing characteristics of this system type and of these quality concerns. As a solution, we present a new classification developed in the scope of a large-scale industry-academia project. The classification considers both the method type, e.g., testing, and the concern addressed, e.g., safety. Over 70 people have successfully used the classification on 53 methods. We argue that the classification is a more suitable means to categorise V&V methods for SCP of automated systems and that it can help other researchers and practitioners.

  • On challenges for achieving conformance of files to document standards : The case of PDF/A-1b
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Joint Proceedings EURAS 2021. - Aachen : Verlag Mainz. - 9783958864214 - 395886421X ; , s. 171-190
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • File formats that are standardized and designed for longevity, such as PDF/A, are preferred in the context of long-term archival of digital assets. However, it is far from trivial to either create standard-conformant files or check the conformance of any given file due to the complexity and ambiguities in PDF standards. This study aims to investigate challenges when checking PDF/A conformance for real-world PDF files from public sector organizations that are intended for long-term-archival. Findings show that only a small proportion of the PDF files claim to conform to the PDF/A-1b specification and even fewer files pass conformance checks performed through the use of various conformance checking tools. Challenges for conformance checking tools include both ambiguities in the technical specifications of standards and limitations in the implementation of software.

  • Swedish Dissertations : Archived for the Future?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 17th International Academic MindTrek Conference. - New York : ACM Press. - 9781450319928 ; , s. 176-179
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The publication and preservation of doctoral dissertations is fundamental to progression of research in a field. It allows future generations to 'stand on the shoulders of giants'.Archiving dissertations requires to store them in a way that they will be accessible even when technologies change. Classical paper publications fulfill those requirements but have disadvantages such as the need for physical storage or distribution. An increasingly popular alternative is to store dissertations as electronic documents such as PDF files. In this study, we analyze the extent to which electronically available doctoral dissertations published in Sweden fulfill the basic requirements of standard conformance and applicability for long-term archiving. We find that only a small proportion of dissertations' electronic publications follow the Swedish National Archive's requirements to conform to standards made for long-term archiving. Only at one Swedish university, a significant number of electronic publications does conform to PDF/A-1b. Interestingly, conformance to PDF/A-1b correlates to properly setting the title of a PDF document and choosing a paper format different from A4 (ISO 216). This suggests that the consequences of missed compliance for long-term archiving are not commonly known and authors have to make a conscious choice for PDF/A-1b compliance.
