  • Acceleration or Avoidance? The Role of Temporary Moves Abroad in the Transition to Adulthood
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Population Space and Place. - : Wiley. - 1544-8444. ; 21:6, s. 553-567
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the meaning attributed to the practice of going abroad' from the perspective of youth transitions. It assumes that the growing prevalence of temporary moves abroad among middle-class youth can be understood as spatial manifestations of, and responses to, both expanded opportunities for individual choice and increased demands for flexibility in the face of uncertainty. The paper is based on an analysis of in-depth retrospective interviews with 14 thirty-year-old Swedes who had spent at least 1year studying or working abroad in their early to mid twenties. The questions addressed concern the meanings attributed to temporary moves abroad in relation to (a) personal history and personal choice and (b) the management of opportunity and uncertainty. Although going abroad is fairly common among middle-class Swedish youth, the results indicate that the decision to do so is typically described as highly personal, with reference to one's family history, childhood environment, personality, or desire to become someone different. The act of physical displacement is conceptualised as a way to accelerate progress towards independence and autonomy and to incorporate evidence of courage, flexibility, and ability to act into one's biography. However, mobility is also used to create fail-safe' situations - to postpone and avoid the demands for long-term planning and progress integral to the transition to adulthood. Whereas the pressure for success seems to be considerably relaxed in many temporary communities of mobile youth, it is clearly part of the social context at home. • Activities and Activity Patterns Involving Travel Abroad while Growing up: The Case of Young Swedes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Tourism Geographies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1461-6688 .- 1470-1340. ; 12:1, s. 100-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Departing from ongoing discussions concerning the changing role and motive structure of transnational mobility among ordinary people, this article investigates activities and activity patterns motivating travel abroad among a group of Swedish youth. Using retrospective travel data covering the years of childhood and adolescence of 140 individuals, three specific issues are addressed: (a) the extent to which travel abroad has become part of a broad range of activities; (b) the role of travel in relation to school and other organized activities; (c) the occurrence and forms of repetitive travel behaviour. The most important findings concern repetitive travel behaviour: a little less than half of the respondents have highly repetitive travel patterns as regards activity or purpose of travel. Moreover, about two thirds of the repetitive travel patterns are largely or completely dominated by trips to the same country of destination. Many are motivated by visiting relatives abroad but the majority are motivated by leisure activities seemingly unrelated to the spatial configuration of social relationships.

  • Aspects of Corporeal, Virtual and Media Mobility Development in Sweden
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Cosmobilities workshop: The future of Cosmobilities Network, 12-14 march 2008, Holbaek, Denmark.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Diverse forms of spatial mobility are significant features of current social life. The rapid and converging development of space-transcending technologies (high-speed transportation and information and communication technologies) and still increasing virtual access to other places through media representation (e.g. news and popular culture) are thoroughly affecting people’s use of space and place. Decreased friction of distance, extended social networks and everyday activity patterns are major indicators of this. Gradually, spatial mobility is becoming institutionalised and expected, turning high levels of travel and communication from a choice to more of a necessity. Our projects aim to explore the development of various forms of spatial mobility and human interaction, be they physical, virtual, or media related. Their intricate interrelations in terms of complements, substitutes, displacements, and modifications − and the intersections between these − are a particular focus.

  • How normal is travelling abroad? Differences in transnational mobility between groups of young Swedes.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Environment and Planning A. ; 41:3, s. 649-667
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Travel across national borders is growing rapidly as a consequence of greater ease and access to fast means of transport, but also due to the reorganization of society and stretching of social relations over large distances. Much recent writing on transnational mobility has argued that long-distance travel is increasingly a normal and sometimes necessary part of ordinary life for many people in richer countries. This article investigates differences in the extent of transnational mobility between groups of Swedish youth with different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds. The study includes eight groups (162 individuals) of students in the last year of senior secondary school (16-19 years old). Comparisons are based on the respondents’ mobility biographies – information about all trips abroad taken during childhood and adolescence. One important finding of the study is the very large difference in transnational mobility − in particular aeromobility − between the most mobile group and the other groups. Those in the most mobile group attend a privately run school in a central, urban location; the majority of students in this group have at least one parent in a managerial position. The study also finds that there is a substantial difference in transnational mobility between youth living in an urban versus rural environment. Taken together, the results confirm the idea of transnational mobility as a critical, differentiating factor between youth in a northern European context. Furthermore, the results presented here do not assign transnational social relations a prominent role in shaping the distribution of mobility between social groups in Swedish society. Of overwhelming importance in this respect is the extent to which holiday leisure travel is available and prioritized.
