• Accelerometer-measured physical activity among adolescents in a multicultural area characterized by low socioeconomic status
• 2018
• Ingår i: International Journal of Adolescent Medicine and Health. - 0334-0139. ; 30:3
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• PURPOSE: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to describe and analyze accelerometer-measured sedentary time and physical activity (PA) among adolescents in a multicultural area characterized by low socioeconomic status (SES). METHOD: Seventh-graders (n=114 (girls n=66), mean age: 12.8±0.5 y) were recruited from three schools in a multicultural area of the city of Gothenburg, Sweden. Sedentary time and PA were measured with ActiGraph™ accelerometers. RESULT: Of total wear-time, 70 (±6)% was sedentary, with girls being more sedentary than boys. Girls had less light PA (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) than boys. Similar patterns were shown during in-school and out-of-school hours. During wear-time, 53% had a mean of ≥60 min of MVPA per day, but only 6% of the girls and 24% of the boys were sufficiently physically active every day. Girls had more sedentary bouts of ≥10 min and fewer MVPA bouts of ≥5 min per day than boys. Those who participated in organized sports spent a mean of 15 more minutes of MVPA per day compared to those who did not. No association was observed between body mass index (BMI) and sedentary time and PA. CONCLUSION: Only a few adolescents from a Swedish multicultural area characterized by low SES met the PA recommendations every day, and girls were more sedentary and less physically active than boys. Adolescents involved in organized sports had more of MVPA per day than their non-involved peers. Sedentary time and PA were not related to BMI.

• Few electron double quantum dots in InAs/InP nanowire heterostructures
• 2007
• Ingår i: Nano Letters. - The American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6992. ; 7:2, s. 243-246
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• We report on fabrication of double quantum dots in catalytically grown InAs/InP nanowire heterostructures. In the few-electron regime, starting with both dots empty, our low-temperature transport measurements reveal a clear shell structure for sequential charging of the larger of the two dots with up to 12 electrons. The resonant current through the double dot is found to depend on the orbital coupling between states of different radial symmetry. The charging energies are well described by a capacitance model if next-neighbor capacitances are taken into account.

• Med accelerometrar kan fysisk aktivitet mätas objektivt- Snabb metodutveckling, men mer kompetens krävs för användning fullt ut i klinisk praxis Physical Activity Measured With Accelerometers
• 2019
• Ingår i: Läkartidningen. - 1652-7518. ; 116
• Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
• The development of accelerometers has revolutionized measurement of physical activity, and they are used to a large extent in research and have started to be implemented into clinical settings. However, achievement of reliable outcomes requires good methodological knowledge and skills by the user. Otherwise, significant measurement errors may occur, interfering with assessment of the physical activity level in the population, group differences, associations with health parameters or effect of treatments. This paper by the Swedish Network for Objective Measurement of Movement (NORM) provides an overview of physical activity measurement including sections of data collection, processing of raw data into useful metrics and statistical analysis. It targets users of accelerometer in research, health care and national surveys.

• Failure of generic risk assessment model framework to predict groundwater pollution risk at hundreds of metal contaminated sites : Implications for research needs
• 2020
• Ingår i: Environmental Research. - Elsevier. - 0013-9351 .- 1096-0953. ; 185, s. 1-9
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
Soil pollution constitutes one of the major threats to public health, where spreading to groundwater is one of several critical aspects. In most internationally adopted frameworks for routine risk assessments of contaminated land, generic models and soil guideline values are cornerstones. In order to protect the groundwater at contaminated sites, a common practice worldwide today is to depart from health risk-based limit concentrations for groundwater, and use generic soil-to-groundwater spreading models to back-calculate corresponding equilibrium levels (concentration limits) in soil, which must not be exceeded at the site. This study presents an extensive survey of how actual soil and groundwater concentrations, compiled for all high-priority contaminated sites in Sweden, relate to the national model for risk management of contaminated sites, with focus on As, Cu, Pb and Zn. Results show that soil metal concentrations, as well as total amounts, constitute a poor basis for assessing groundwater contamination status. The evaluated model was essentially incapable of predicting groundwater contamination (i.e. concentrations above limit values) based on soil data, and erred on the "unsafe side" in a significant number of cases, with modelled correlations not being conservative enough. Further, the risk of groundwater contamination was almost entirely independent of industry type. In essence, since neither soil contaminant loads nor industry type is conclusive, there is a need for a supportive framework for assessing metal spreading to groundwater accounting for site-specific, geochemical conditions.

• Tunable effective g factor in InAs nanowire quantum dots
• 2005
• Ingår i: Physical Review B (Condensed Matter and Materials Physics). - American Physical Society. - 1098-0121. ; 72:20
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• We report tunneling spectroscopy measurements of the Zeeman spin splitting in InAs few-electron quantum dots. The dots are formed between two InP barriers in InAs nanowires with a wurtzite crystal structure grown using chemical beam epitaxy. The values of the electron g factors of the first few electrons entering the dot are found to strongly depend on dot size. They range from close to the InAs bulk value in large dots vertical bar g(*)vertical bar=13 down to vertical bar g(*)vertical bar=2.3 for the smallest dots.

• Effects of pH, salt and time on ligand binding properties of overexpressed melanocortin 4 receptor.
• 2004
• Ingår i: Journal of Biochemical and Biophysical Methods. - Elsevier. - 0165-022X. ; 58:3, s. 195-205
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
• The G-protein coupled melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4r) plays an important role in the energy metabolism. We overexpressed the MC4r in CHO cells and performed characterisation studies on the cell membranes to determine functional stability and ligand binding properties of the receptor. The affinity for the ligands [Nle4, Image-Phe7]-αMSH and MTII was lost below pH 6 but could be restored by returning to physiological pH. Increasing NaCl concentration up to 1 M had little influence on the binding of either ligand. At neutral pH, physiological salt concentration and 4 °C the ligand affinity of the receptor was stable for up to 6 days. These findings will facilitate design of purification methods for the receptor.

• Physical activity assessed by activity monitor and doubly labeled water in children
• 2001
• Ingår i: Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. - 0195-9131 .- 1530-0315. ; 33:2, s. 275-281
• Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
•
PURPOSE: To validate the Computer Science and Application's (CSA) activity monitor for assessment of the total amount of physical activity during two school-weeks in 9-yr-old children and to develop equations to predict total energy expenditure (TEE) and activity energy expenditure (AEE) from activity counts and anthropometric variables.

METHODS: A total of 26 children (15 boys and 11 girls, mean age 9.1 +/- 0.3 yr) were monitored for 14 consecutive days. TEE was simultaneously measured by the doubly labeled water method. Averaged activity counts (counts.min(-1)) were compared with data on: 1) TEE, 2) AEE = TEE minus basal metabolic rate (BMR; estimated from predictive equations), and 3) daily physical activity level (PAL = TEE/BMR).

RESULTS: Physical activity determined by activity counts was significantly related to the data on energy expenditures: TEE (r = 0.39; P < 0.05), AEE (r = 0.54; P < 0.01), and PAL (r = 0.58; P < 0.01). Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that TEE was significantly influenced by gender, body composition (body weight or fat free mass), and activity counts (R(2) = 0.54--0.60). AEE was significantly influenced by activity counts and gender (R(2) = 0.45). There were no significant differences between activity counts and PAL in discriminating among activity levels with "low" (PAL < 1.56), "moderate" (1.57 < or = PAL > or = 1.81), and "high" (PAL > 1.81) intensity.

CONCLUSION: Activity counts from the CSA activity monitor seems to be a useful measure of the total amount of physical activity in 9-yr-old children. Activity counts contributed significantly to the explained variation in TEE and was the best predictor of AEE.
