- The spatial aspect of access to nature experience is considered a key factor for studying school-age educare and connectedness to nature. While the standard approach for questions of connectedness to nature is to study at the individual level using methods such as observations, psychometric scaling, and interviews, less common are spatial methods applied to structural or collective aspects of these questions; connectedness to nature study rarely considers the human relationship with nature across sociocultural/structural/institutional levels. Spatial analysis is presented as a step toward a broader consideration of connectedness to nature; careful consideration of connectedness to nature/disconnection must explore the forces beyond the individual shaping access and opportunity. Specifically, the study considers access through proximity to nature from school-age educare sites in the Swedish city of Malmö. Using spatial methodology, proximity to nature was measured at 67 school-aged educare sites. The results provide a complex picture of a range from high to low-quality access to nature for children at the sites. The results help highlight the importance of access via proximity while also opening the door to a mix of other sociocultural/structural/institutional factors to be considered in support of children’s access to nature experience.

Connectedness to nature : a tale of three scales

- A substantial body of research highlights the value of nature experience in supporting children’s well-being and development. Given the growing interest in connectedness to nature (C2N), a better understanding of C2N measurement provides multiple opportunities, including consideration of the use of tools for research purposes and practitioner program measurement. The combination of interest in C2N and the potential for measuring the human relationship with nature provide the background for this exploratory study. The study’s goal was to highlight the appropriate use of C2N scales based on considerations of context and culture. Three different, albeit related, efforts to translate, adapt, and use C2N measurements with children in a Danish-Swedish context during 2021–2022 were examined using case study methodology. Synthesis of the case studies provides general lessons and specific insights researchers and practitioners have learned regarding scale development and the application of measurement tools for children. Process functionality, child well-being, and conceptual appropriateness are three outcomes of the analysis that guide using child-oriented C2N scales in a Nordic context. The results highlight promoting discussions about nature and children’s access to nature while guiding scale use. Based on the results, a checklist was created supporting a decision-making process for scale use.

- Den här artikeln sammanfattar resultaten från tre studier om förskollärares och barns samtal under naturvetenskapliga aktiviteter, där kreativt skapande varit en del av upplägget .Resultatet visar hur möjligheten till lärande kan hindras när förskollärare och barn har fokus på olika delar i en undervisningssituation och ger exempel på vad man som lärare kan tänka på för att gemensamt fokus ska bibehållas. Studierna pekar även ut möjliga fallgropar att som förskollärare vara medveten om i arbetet med ett naturvetenskapligt lärande, till exempelabstraktioner. Slutligen diskuteras de kommunikationsmönster som kunnat identifieras hosförskollärare och barn i de naturvetenskapliga aktiviteterna.

- Som handledare och bedömande lärare på förskollärarprogrammets termin sju, där studenterna skriver sitt examensarbete, reflekterade jag under många år över att knappt några studenter valde att skriva sin uppsats om innehållsområdet naturvetenskap. Att jag funderade över detta hängde ihop med att jag själv undervisar om naturvetenskap på förskollärarprogrammet och att så få ville skriva om innehållområdet var enligt mig anmärkningsvärt av två anledningar. Den första gäller att naturvetenskap är ett innehållsområde som successivt förstärkts i läroplanen för förskolan (Skolverket 1998/2010; 2018). Den andra handlar om att naturvetenskapsundervisningen i förskollärarprogrammet fått fina omdömen i kursutvärderingarna genom åren. Vad var det då som gjorde att detta inte återspeglades i valet av uppsatsinnehåll i termin sju?

- Although many pediatric B-cell lymphoma patients are being cured today, much is still unknown about the pathogenesis of this disease. Protein tyrosine phosphatases are involved in the control of survival, growth, and differentiation of cells. The authors have analyzed 26 pediatric B-cell lymphoma cases for the expression of a panel of phosphatases and report a statistically significant lower expression intensity of PTEN and HePTP and higher nuclear SHP2 expression in B-cell lymphoma cases compared to lymphoid tissue. Knowledge about the expression of key regulatory proteins in pediatric B-cell lymphomas is necessary for revealing the complex molecular background of this disease.

Modifying effect of gender on the prognostic value of clinicopathological factors and Ki67 expression in melanoma : a population-based cohort study

- BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma is the most deadly form of skin cancer. Female sex is known to have a protective effect on incidence, tumour characteristics, and mortality from melanoma. However, the potentially modifying effect of sex on the prognostic significance of clinicopathological and investigative factors is generally not taken into consideration in biomarker studies. In this study, we compared the sex-specific distribution and prognostic value of established tumour characteristics and Ki67 expression in 255 cases of incident primary melanoma in a prospective, population-based cohort study.METHODS: The study included 255 incident cases of melanoma, 132 females and 123 males, in the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study. Tumours from 226 (88.6%) cases had been assembled in tissue microarrays. Clinicopathological factors and immunohistochemical Ki67 expression were assessed and correlated with disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) using Kaplan-Meier analysis, log rank test and univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses, stratified for gender. Effect of gender on melanoma-specific survival (MSS) after first recurrence was also analysed.RESULTS: Women were significantly younger at diagnosis than men (p = 0.012). The most common tumour sites were the legs in women (37.5%) and the dorsal trunk in men (37.8%). Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that tumour location had no prognostic impact in women, but in men, location to the frontal trunk was significantly associated with a reduced DFS compared with all other locations combined and location to the dorsal trunk was significantly associated with a prolonged OS. High Ki67 expression was significantly associated with a reduced DFS and OS in men but not in women, also when adjusted for other factors. In men, but not in women, ulceration was an independent prognostic factor for both DFS and OS. MSS after first local, regional or distant recurrence was significantly shorter for men than for women.CONCLUSIONS: The results from this study demonstrate that the prognostic value of tumour location, Ki67 expression and ulceration in melanoma differs according to gender. These findings need to be validated in future studies, as they may help improve prognostication in patients with melanoma. Moreover, our findings demonstrate that sex-stratified analyses add valuable information to biomarker studies.
