  • Spatial and temporal variability of snow accumulation rate on the East Antarctic ice divide between Dome Fuji and EPICA DML
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Cryosphere. - : Copernicus GmbH. - 1994-0416 .- 1994-0424. ; 5:4, s. 1057-1081
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To better understand the spatio-temporal variability of the glaciological environment in Dronning Maud Land (DML), East Antarctica, a 2800-km-long Japanese-Swedish traverse was carried out. The route includes ice divides between two ice-coring sites at Dome Fuji and EPICA DML. We determined the surface mass balance (SMB) averaged over various time scales in the late Holocene based on studies of snow pits and firn cores, in addition to radar data. We find that the large-scale distribution of the SMB depends on the surface elevation and continentality, and that the SMB differs between the windward and leeward sides of ice divides for strong-wind events. We suggest that the SMB is highly influenced by interactions between the large-scale surface topography of ice divides and the wind field of strong-wind events that are often associated with high-precipitation events. Local variations in the SMB are governed by the local surface topography, which is influenced by the bedrock topography. In the eastern part of DML, the accumulation rate in the second half of the 20th century is found to be higher by similar to 15% than averages over longer periods of 722 a or 7.9 ka before AD 2008. A similar increasing trend has been reported for many inland plateau sites in Antarctica with the exception of several sites on the leeward side of the ice divides.

  • The role of simulation in support of Internet-based energy services
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Energy and Buildings. - : Elsevier BV. - 0378-7788 .- 1872-6178. ; 36:8, s. 837-846
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The connection of buildings to the Internet broadband network is becoming commonplace. The establishment of such an infrastructure enables the development of a range of new energy, environment and health-related services for people in their homes and workplaces. Telecommunications companies and utilities are actively developing examples of such services, and local authorities and health care providers are supporting trial deployments. Several of the services can be enabled or enhanced through the application of building modelling and simulation. This paper describes the infrastructure for the e-services under test within a European research project and shows the potential for simulation support for these services.

  • An integrated acousto- and dielectrophoresis device for tumor cell separation, concentration, and single-cell trapping
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 20th International Conference on Miniaturized Systems for Chemistry and Life Sciences, MicroTAS 2016. - 9780979806490 ; , s. 1657-1658
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Many microfluidic devices have been developed to separate rare cells, e.g. circulating tumor cells. The collection and analysis of the separated rare cells pose a challenge as it may lead to loss of target cells since extremely small number of cells are usually suspended in a large volume after separation. Here, we present an integrated device that allows acoustophoretic target cell separation and concentration, followed by dielectrophoretic single-cell trapping. We show that the human prostate cancer cell line DU145 were efficiently separated from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and 81.7% of DU145 were trapped, with a contamination of 1.7% PBMC.

  • Pathways to electrochemical solar-hydrogen technologies
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Energy & Environmental Science. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 1754-5692 .- 1754-5706. ; 11:10, s. 2768-2783
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solar-powered electrochemical production of hydrogen through water electrolysis is an active and important research endeavor. However, technologies and roadmaps for implementation of this process do not exist. In this perspective paper, we describe potential pathways for solar-hydrogen technologies into the marketplace in the form of photoelectrochemical or photovoltaic-driven electrolysis devices and systems. We detail technical approaches for device and system architectures, economic drivers, societal perceptions, political impacts, technological challenges, and research opportunities. Implementation scenarios are broken down into short-term and long-term markets, and a specific technology roadmap is defined. In the short term, the only plausible economical option will be photovoltaic-driven electrolysis systems for niche applications. In the long term, electrochemical solar-hydrogen technologies could be deployed more broadly in energy markets but will require advances in the technology, significant cost reductions, and/ or policy changes. Ultimately, a transition to a society that significantly relies on solar-hydrogen technologies will benefit from continued creativity and influence from the scientific community.

  • Techno economic analysis of thermochemical energy storage and transport system utilizing "zeolite Boiler" : Case study in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Energy Procedia. - : Elsevier. - 1876-6102. ; , s. 102-111
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Thermochemical energy storage and transport system utilizing zeolite steam adsorption and desorption cycle is one of the methods to resolve the mismatch between industrial surplus heat and heat demands. To generate 60°C hot water utilizing zeolite 13X, zeolite boiler employing moving bed and indirect heat exchanger was developed. Pressurized water is heated up and flash steam is injected into the zeolite bed for adsorption. A quasi - 2D model solving heat and mass conservation equations was developed, leading to a performance characterization of this zeolite boiler. The developed simulation model was used to predict performance of a heat charging device employing moving bed as well. Based on this calculation, a case study, heat transporting between a local steel works and a hotel was examined and all corresponding cost were fixed. The Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) results in around 60 €/MWh which is comparable cost against conventional pellet boiler. Sensitivity analysis showed both of cheaper transportation cost and larger zeolite capacity on the one trailer give a comparable impact on the LCOE.

  • Assessing travel satisfaction in public transport : A configurational approach
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Research in Transportation Business and Management (RTBM). - : Elsevier BV. - 2210-5395 .- 2210-5409. ; 93
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous findings have established that satisfaction with public transport service quality attributes (reliability/functionality, information, courtesy/simplicity, comfort, safety) relate to overall travel satisfaction. Recent studies propose that the importance of these attributes for travel satisfaction varies in different contexts and call for new approaches for enhancing the understanding of these relationships. We address this call by using a configurational perspective and applying fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), to explore how satisfaction with service quality attributes relate to high travel satisfaction. By analyzing user survey data before and after an intervention in public transport services in a Swedish city, we: 1) find that high travel satisfaction occurs in the interaction between service quality attributes; 2) identify different configurations of satisfaction with service quality attributes leading to high travel satisfaction; and 3) show how context alters overall travel satisfaction. We conclude that using a configurational approach is useful for understanding the complexity of travel satisfaction.

  • Rules for aggregated satisfaction with work commutes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Transportation. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0049-4488 .- 1572-9435. ; 41:3, s. 495-506
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In general trips frequently entail several stages varying in mode, duration, and other factors. In some way travelers aggregate their satisfaction with the stages to satisfaction with the whole trip. In this paper we address the question of how this aggregation is made. We use data from a Swedish survey measuring satisfaction with commutes to and from work and with the stages of the commutes. We test several aggregation rules for their goodness of fit to the observations. Our results show that a normatively correct averaging rule that takes into account the relative durations of the stages out-perform heuristic aggregation rules such as the peak-end, summation, and equal-weight averaging rules. We note that this does not exclude that the heuristic aggregation rules apply to other trips than repetitive commute trips.

  • Trend and priority change of climate change mitigation technology in the global mining sector
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Resources policy. - : Elsevier. - 0301-4207 .- 1873-7641. ; 78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this work is to explore the most relevant driving factors for innovation in the mining, mineral processing and metals sectors, related to climate change mitigation technology (CCMT). To do so, we use a decomposition analysis based on the logarithmic mean Divisia index to analyze the trends in patent families collected from the World Intellectual Property Organization Mining database between 2001 and 2016. The sheer number of patent families filed in the most relevant patent offices is decomposed from the perspective of three factors, namely: the priority of climate change mitigation technology in a country; the overall relevance of the mining, mineral processing and metals sector in a country; and the size of patent families from a country. These factors have a different impact in different country groups, depending on whether the mining and minerals sector plays a strong role in their economy or not, or whether they are a developed or developing country. We observe that the decomposed patent trend correlates well with important events that affect the mining and metals sector, for example, the Paris Agreement and the price trend of metals. We are able to draw conclusions on how CCMT is developing in the mining sector of different countries and use those conclusions to support policies that encourage the further development of CCMT.
