  • #metoo, byggbranschen och de gröna näringarna
  • 2021

  • “We passed the trust on” : Strategies for security in #MeToo activism in Sweden
  • 2020

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The #metoo movement can serve as a case for how networked online environments can provide settings for the mobilization of social movements, while also entail serious risks for those involved. In Sweden, over hundred thousand people were engaged in activities against sexual harassments and abuse, where social media were used to collect testimonies and to draft and discuss petitions that were later published in print news media. While HCI research on trust focus on how people trust technical systems, the authorities behind the system, or the user generated data, trust between peers in vulnerable communities is less researched. In this study, based on semi-structured interviews and a survey that involved 62 organizers of the Swedish #metoo movement, we therefore look into the question of how a secure and supportive environment was achieved among participants despite the scale of the activism. The result shows how trust was aggregated over networks of technical systems, institutions, people, shared values and practices. The organizers of the petitions used tools and channels at their disposal such as e.g. already established social media contexts that enabled the #metoo petitions to be formed easily and spread quickly. Establishing a supportive culture based on recognition and shared values was central for the movement. However, when the activism was scaled up, strategies were used to increase security by clarifying rules and roles, limiting access to information, restricting access to groups, and limiting the scope of communication.

  • Jewel in the Crown : The Nobel Banquet Broadcast as Co-Construction
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 39:2, s. 111-126
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the aims of the Nobel Banquet broadcast, produced by the Swedish public service company SVT and the Nobel Foundation. The study suggests that the programme can be viewed as a co-construction of science and media, and that the Nobel Foundation has three primary purposes: 1) to teach the audience about science; 2) to honour the laureates; and 3) to maintain and increase the status of the Nobel prize. SVT, for their part, has two main purposes: 1) to teach their audience about science, and 2) to entertain. The aims of the Nobel Foundation and SVT may seem disparate, but they are interrelated. At the same time, the subtleties between the entities create a tension that develops through mutual negotiations. The study ends with a discussion of two unexpected findings: 1) the shared, yet essentially differently-grounded aims of both parties to inform about science, and 2) the fact that their scientific content has increased in both absolute and relative terms over the years, a finding that questions notions of a continuous mediatisation of social institutions.

  • The Nobel celebrity-scientist : genius and personality
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Celebrity Studies. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1939-2397 .- 1939-2400. ; 7:2, s. 234-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Scientists are a poorly covered area of research in the field of celebrity studies. This article attempts to rectify this issue by discussing representations of science and scientists in a televised Nobel Banquet on Swedish public-service television, SVT. The televised Nobel Banquet is a genre hybrid that consists of two genres; namely, science communication and award show. Drawing on cultural, media, and gender studies, this article examines the mediated persona of the scientist in the televised Nobel Banquet via contextualised textual analysis. The main questions of this article are as follows: in what ways do the media, the genre, and the idea of geniality affect the representation of the scientist? The article suggests that the increasing celebrification' of scientists is characteristic of the past several decades, and that, among other factors, this has been due to the entry of aspects of entertainment into banquet broadcasts. Through such processes, the celebrity-scientist' has emerged within the high-status sphere of science. However, a very specific type of celebrity is represented in the Nobel context: the celebrity-scientist is commonly a white man of high education whose fame has been reached through hard work in competition with others of the same kind. This representation of a scientist and its associated quality of genius will here be examined from a gender perspective.

  • Legitimising a Feminist Agenda : The #metoo petitions in Sweden 2017–2018
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nordic Journal of Media Studies. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 2003-184X. ; 2:1, s. 121-132
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During 2017 and 2018, the #metoo hashtag united a global movement against sexual abuse and harassment. In Sweden, a large portion of the attention was given to the voices of working women, who organised and wrote petitions that were published in news media. Previous research has found that media reports of sexual abuse often focus on singular stories, rather than describing the underlying structural problems, and that the problem is often framed as an individual rather than structural problem. This article accounts for a qualitative content analysis of the first 28 published #metoo petitions in Sweden, with the goal of understanding how these framed the issue. In contrast to previous research, this study shows how the petitions established a coherent feminist explanatory framework that placed the problems on a structural level by focusing on work environments and framing demands in terms of general and perfectly reasonable human rights.

  • The significance of feminist infrastructure: #MeToo in the construction industry and the green industry in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Gender Work and Organization. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0968-6673 .- 1468-0432. ; 31:3, s. 1092-1112
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To better understand the interplay between digital activism and feminist infrastructure, this study investigates #MeToo activism in the Swedish construction industry and green industry. Both are industries in transition characterized by a dissonance between formal incentives, that encourage women and others to work in environments previously dominated by white men, and the informal power structures hosting a toxic masculinity. Based on media texts and interviews with key persons from the industries, the article situates #MeToo in a local context and shows how it was embedded in a supportive social, cultural, and technical infrastructure. In both industries, at the time of #MeToo this feminist infrastructure was already in place consisting of: an awareness of the problem of sexual harassment and abuse, knowledge of feminist explanatory models, established feminist online networks, and a supportive feminist culture, which together with widespread digital and feminist literacy became instrumental in the organization of the movement. Social media connected activists and created a critical mass by supporting the uniting of conflicting identity positions around shared differences. The established feminist infrastructure meant that the #MeToo activism, by articulating a widespread affective dissonance, pushed open doors that were already half open and forced them wide. This can explain some of the movement's success in Sweden.

  • Framing the Swedish #metoo movement
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nordmedia 2019.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The #metoo movement’s aim was to create awareness of and show how widespread and systematic sexual harassment is in working life. The movement received much attention in Swedish news media, especially in the initial phase between October and December 2017 (Eklund, 2018). However, we know less of what the reports looked like. Using quantitative content analysis, this papers investigates how Swedish news media reported on the metoo-movement in its initial phase, focusing specifically on what contexts and focus dominated (individual, extra-ordinary cases, or collective petitions of ordinary women), and whether the issues were framed as episodic or thematic.
