  • Social and moral psychology of COVID-19 across 69 countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scientific Data. - : NATURE PORTFOLIO. - 2052-4463. ; 10:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all domains of human life, including the economic and social fabric of societies. One of the central strategies for managing public health throughout the pandemic has been through persuasive messaging and collective behaviour change. To help scholars better understand the social and moral psychology behind public health behaviour, we present a dataset comprising of 51,404 individuals from 69 countries. This dataset was collected for the International Collaboration on Social & Moral Psychology of COVID-19 project (ICSMP COVID-19). This social science survey invited participants around the world to complete a series of moral and psychological measures and public health attitudes about COVID-19 during an early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic (between April and June 2020). The survey included seven broad categories of questions: COVID-19 beliefs and compliance behaviours; identity and social attitudes; ideology; health and well-being; moral beliefs and motivation; personality traits; and demographic variables. We report both raw and cleaned data, along with all survey materials, data visualisations, and psychometric evaluations of key variables.

  • National identity predicts public health support during a global pandemic
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : Nature Portfolio. - 2041-1723. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Understanding collective behaviour is an important aspect of managing the pandemic response. Here the authors show in a large global study that participants that reported identifying more strongly with their nation reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies in the context of the pandemic. Changing collective behaviour and supporting non-pharmaceutical interventions is an important component in mitigating virus transmission during a pandemic. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = -0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

    • The foreign colleagues answer the following questions: Does the current regulation of the standard employment relationship create poverty in your country? Which are the kinds of non-standard employment contracts (i.e. fixed-term contracts, part-time, etc.) that create fragility and poverty? Does the introduction of new technologies (digital platforms, smart work, etc.) contribute to the increase of the number of working poor and poverty? Does a linkage between the working poor and female employment exist? Which are the causes of the poverty of work performed in agriculture? Do taxation law and social security law have an impact on the increase of the number of working poor? Which is the answer of the social security system to the new poverties (both during working life and after it)?.

  • "So many things have changed" : Situated understandings of climate change impacts among the Bassari, south-eastern Senegal
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Environmental Science and Policy. - 1462-9011 .- 1873-6416. ; 148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mainstream discourses frame anthropogenic climate change as a biophysical apolitical problem, thus privileging Western science and silencing other worldviews. Through a case study among the Bassari, an ethnic group in South-Eastern Senegal, we assess the local, embodied, and situated understandings of climate change and the tensions that arise when the apolitical global climate change discourse interacts with situated understandings. Drawing on data from 47 semi-structured interviews and 176 surveys, we find that while the global climate change discourse has not permeated into the Bassari, they experience climate change through its many impacts on the biophysical and socio-economic systems. Results also highlight that climate is not considered the main or only driver of change, but that changes in elements of the climate system are inextricably linked with political and economic dynamics and environmental degradation. Finally, our results point toward the importance of values and supernatural forces in defining situated ways of conceptualizing, interpreting, and responding to change. By including situated worldviews in theoretical understandings of climate and environmental change, we contribute to the claims about the need to reframe how climate change is conceptualized. Our research emphasizes the importance of a relational view of climate change, which requires moving beyond understanding isolated climate change impacts towards defining climate change as a systemic problem. Building on feminist and decolonial literature, we argue for the need for more plural and democratic ways of thinking about climate change, crossing epistemological and ontological boundaries and including local communities and their knowledge and understandings.

  • Facets of Psychopathy, Intelligence and Aggressive Antisocial Behaviors in Young Violent Offenders
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-1078. ; 10, s. 1-10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Psychopathy continues to be a challenge in forensic contexts, and evidence of its association with destructive behaviors, such as aggressive antisocial behaviors, is extensive. However, the potential role of intelligence as moderator of the well-established association between psychopathy and aggressive antisocial behaviors has largely been neglected, despite intelligence having been independently related to both concepts. Increased knowledge of whether intelligence is relevant to this association is needed because of its possible implications on the assessment and treatment of individuals with psychopathic traits and aggressive antisocial behaviors. This study aimed to investigate the association between psychopathic traits, aggressive antisocial behaviors, and intelligence in young violent offenders and to test whether intelligence moderates the relationship between psychopathic traits and aggressive antisocial behaviors. Participants were 269 male violent offenders aged 18 to 25 years, assessed on the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), the Life History of Aggression (LHA), and the General Ability Index from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, 3rd edition. Associations were tested with Spearman’s rho and moderation analysis was performed through ordinary least squares regressions. The PCL-R four-facet structure was used for the analyses. We found a positive association between psychopathic traits and aggressive antisocial behaviors, and a small, negative association between the Affective PCL-R facet and intelligence. In the moderation analyses, a small yet statistically significant moderation effect of intelligence on the association between the Interpersonal facet and LHA total scores was demonstrated. However, the amount of variance in the LHA total score explained by the model was very small; 2.9%. We suggest that intelligence, however important for rehabilitation strategies and everyday functioning, is not necessarily pertinent to understanding aggressive antisocial behaviors in young offenders with psychopathic traits.

  • Psychopathy, Aggression, and Intelligence in Young Violent Offenders: A Moderation Analysis
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services (IAFMHS) Conference. Antwerp, Belgium: June 12-14.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Little attention has been directed to the possible moderating effect of intelligence on the well-established relationship between psychopathy and aggression, even though intelligence in previous research has been linked to both. We examined if intelligence moderates the relationship between psychopathy and aggression in a nationally representative cohort of young male Swedish violent offenders (n = 270). Data on psychopathy (Psychopathy Checklist-Revised), aggression (Life History of Aggression), and intelligence (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III) was collected. Simple ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models indicated that the effect of psychopathy on aggression was not moderated by intelligence.

  • What do elderly users want and need from fitness technologies? : Findings from the ELF@Home project
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Integrating technology in positive psychology practice. - Hershey, USA : IGI Global. - 9781466699861 ; , s. 104-126
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is well known that physical exercise has a significant beneficial effect on mental and physical health, and elderly fitness programs are a good and widely accepted approach to prevent frailty. In this chapter, we examine what elderly people actually want and need when it comes to technologies designed to support and encourage their physical fitness. We present the ELF@Home project as a case study, and report design insights and other results from user involvement in the project. User involvement is a key component of the approach and uses methods such as interviews, focus group meetings, early component and prototype tests with users, as well as inputs from medical experts. ELF@Home is a clear example of a "Positive Technology’" approach exemplifying the scientific and applied use of technology for improving the quality of personal experience through its structuring (by using a goal, rules, and a feedback system) and personal augmentation (to achieve multimodal and mixed experiences). The project proposes the adoption of new technology in everyday life from the perspective of positive psychology, approaching this aim by designing devices and systems that are actually usable and desirable in supporting extended healthy living for this target population.

  • Spanish and Swedish teachers’ perspective of teaching STEM and robotics in preschool : results from the botSTEM project
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Technology and Design Education. - : Springer Netherlands. - 0957-7572 .- 1573-1804. ; , s. 1-21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes outcomes from the Erasmus + project botSTEM, involving a theoretical framework for Science, Technology, Engineering & Technology (STEM) and robotics and teaching activities for preschool teachers and teachers educating children 4–8 years old. Spanish and Swedish preschool teachers’ self-efficacy and views of teaching STEM and robotics are presented, using a mixed methodology based on a questionnaire and focus group interviews. The 3-year long project has improved the preschool teachers’ self-efficacy in STEM and robotics teaching, as described in a questionnaire answered by the preschool teachers after the project. Possibilities in STEM and robotics teaching experienced by them include an increase in children’s agency, knowledge and interest, and the obstacles are mainly structural or technical. Robotics teaching also supports children with special needs when interacting with peers. The results from the botSTEM project point to the benefit of supported long-term professional developmentfor STEM and robotics teaching in preschools.

  • Implementation of an integrated STEM activity in pre-primary schools
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BotSTEM is an ERASMUS+ project. Its outputs are aimed to provide in- and pre-service teachers in Childhood and Primary Education with a didactical framework, research-based materials and best practices using integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) and robot-based approaches for enhancing scientific literacy in young children. Initial results from the implementation of activities following the proposed model in preschools in Spain are presented here. Despite the possible obstacles that preschool teachers initially expressed, the preliminary analysis indicates that the proposed STEM integrated framework, including inquiry teaching and engineering design methodologies, can be used with children as young as 4 y.o. In the case of a project about magnets, the children seem to have learnt some scientific ideas, applied these ideas to design a magnetic toy and learnt about spatial orientation using robots.
