  • Uncivility, racism, and populism : Discourses and interactive practices in anti- & post-democratic communication
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordicom Review. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1403-1108 .- 2001-5119. ; 42:1, s. 3-15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This Special Issue of Nordicom Review discusses interactive practices of articulating and communicating uncivility in the context of recent wider anti- and post-democratic change. We consider that change as a cross-national phenomenon that has been taking place in the Nordic countries, Europe, and indeed elsewhere since the late 1990s and early 2000s, and one that has significantly accelerated with the global rise of the “anxious politics” (Albertson & Gadarian, 2015) of right-wing populism and the far-right (Moffitt, 2016; Mudde, 2019) in recent decades. While our collection joins an ongoing and growing body of research on both un- and incivility – which we describe and to some extent disentangle conceptually in detail below – it carries a few pronounced aims which characterise its contribution to the wider research on mediated and political communication in the context of a crisis of liberal democracy and the rise of nativism and far-right populism.

  • Theologies Speak of Justice : A Study of Islamic and Christian Social Ethics
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to investigate how religious ethics, while retaining its identity, can contribute to political debate and to the understanding of justice. The inquiry addresses these issues by focusing on theological perspectives which challenge the solutions offered to these questions by the liberal paradigm. Three kinds of challenges are studied, each of which is represented by one thinker from the Islamic tradition and one from the Christian tradition, in order to enable a comparative perspective on the contributions of religious traditions. The thinkers studied are: 1) modified liberalism, represented by Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im and Duncan B. Forrester; 2) liberationism, represented by Ali Shariati and Gustavo Gutierrez; and 3) radical traditionalism, as developed by Tariq Ramadan and John Milbank. The study is organized around three main questions. First, how can innovative interpretations of religious tradition be plausibly justified? Second, what role should religious arguments and reasons play in the political sphere? Third, what can religious ethics and theological thought contribute to the understanding of social justice? The questions are engaged by means of a critical and reconstructive engagement with the six thinkers. The suggested solutions are assessed in terms of the criteria of authenticity, communicability, and potential for transformation. It is argued that a religious ethic can rely on a tradition without accepting conservative understandings of that tradition. Furthermore, it is argued that the coherence of religious ethics can be made available for public discourse but that the hospitability of the public forum to such contributions needs to be realized through a deepened democratic culture and a critique of power structures which condition perceptions of rationality. While religious ethics do not articulate complete alternative understandings of justice, they articulate contributions by relating justice to human sociality and to transcendence.

  • Countdown to Armageddon : minister Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam in the latter days
  • 1995
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Being both black and Islamic, the main subject of this study represents a combined opposition to "Americanity", i.e., the civil religion of the United States. The rise of the Nation of Islam (NOI) during the Great Depression is studied in the context of African American social history, the legacy of black nationalism and the hidden Islamic presence in North America. The efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation to neutralize the NOI are exposed by utilizing previously not released FBI files. This section also includes a discussion of the murder of Malcolm X, one of the most renowned spokespersons for the NOI. The main section of this thesis deals with the NOI after the death of Elijah Muhammad, the Last Messenger of God, in 1975. Among the contenders for the position as his Successor, Louis Farrakhan emerged as the most distinguished voice for the radical black Islamic community. Farrakhan is frequently portrayed as a demagogue, a bigot, an inverted racist and a leading anti-Semite. Despite the NOI 1 s much publicized positions on a wide range of important issues, qualitative research is rare. Based on field research, taped interviews and lectures, this study aims to present a balanced account of the NOI by piercing through the mist of media distortions. The religious ideology of the NOI is presented in detail, including its more esoteric aspects. NOI relations to and conflicts with mainstream Islam, the black Church, the Jewish community and white far-right nationalism are also examined. The relationship between black Islam and the urban culture of black American youth, in particular the Hip Hop movement and black gangs, is taken up. Despite being extremely apocalyptic in orientation, the NOI offers practical solutions to a number of severe problems presently faced by the African American community. In the final analysis, the author suggests that the NOI can be understood as a project of auto-civilizing with a strategy akin to that of the European labor movement of the late 19th and early 20th century.
