  • Cognitive automation strategie: Improving use-efficiency of carrier and content of information
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-8271. ; 17, s. 67-70
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production paradigm of mass customization puts high demand on the production system and the people who works there. This is especially true for final assembly where the number of variants is the richest. To handle this variety, the operator needs the correct information accessible at the right time; the operator wants to know how and when to assemble what part. What is correct information includes the amount of information (content of information), how it is presented (carrier of information) and who is the receiver (specific operator). The strategy for Cognitive Automation will be more and more important for companies within this paradigm. This paper aims to show the use-Efficiency of information, both carrier and content, in two industrial case studies. Furthermore how the cognitive automation strategy within a company is connected to the maturity of technology. ©2014 Elsevier B.V. This is an open access article under the CC BY-NC-ND license.

  • ICT-TOOLS SUPPORT TOYOTA WAY PRINCIPLE #6
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: The sixth Swedish Production Symposium. - 9789198097412
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper pursues to discuss how the implementation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)-tools could support standardized work (principle #6). This will be done through a theoretical discussion, and furthermore a case study will show a practical example i.e, a web application as an ICT-tool solution to support standardized tasks. The web application is intended to; help the standardization of assembly instructions, help learn novice and experienced operators, and increase the knowledge sharing. The case study has no documented instructions, as a consequence, there is a high risk that all this knowledge can be lost in the future.

  • Information and Communication Technologies and Lean Production: striving for a synergetic integration
  • 2016
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The role and integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in lean production (LP) has been studied for decades. Research has shown that such technology and lean production complement each other and are interdependent in some cases. Continuing with this research, the purposes of this research work are to elaborate on the role and integration of ICT in lean production, and to ensure the success of the ICT tools that will support lean production. The theoretical findings revealed that ICT has two main roles in lean production systems: to help implement lean production, and to enhance lean principles. One of the lean principles is standardized work. The integration of ICT tools such as Web application prototypes and Quick Response (QR) codes was studied in different scenarios that included a standardized process. The empirical findings showed that Web applications provide ubiquity, which enables access to information everywhere and reaching more workers. With QR codes, it is possible to provide the right information at the right time and at the right place. Moreover, a theoretical framework is proposed, the ICT-LP integration matrix. This framework aims to help integrate ICT in lean production implementations by identifying different scenarios and their challenges and constraints. The development of this framework is based on a theoretical elaboration and empirical studies. The theoretical elaboration was carried out by the comparison of the integration matrix and a conceptual model found in the literature. Partial empirical results found in this research identified challenges for ICT, such as avoiding affecting the good habits between workers like teamwork and providing the adequate infrastructure. However, the success of ICT in terms of its design, development and implementation is complex and elusive. In fact, the theoretical findings have shown that ICT has a positive impact in LP implementations, but this does not ensure a successful integration at all. Knowing this, a consolidated framework was developed to assess success. Partial empirical testing of the framework let us evaluate some ICT prototype tools that support standardized work.

  • Web application + QR codes: an ICT tool to ease access of information and support standardized work
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The International Conference on Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing (FAIM). - 9781910864005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information and Communication Technology (ICT) may offer advantages to organizations, if it is well implemented and aligned to the organization’s goal(s), production system and/or business model. On the other hand, lean manufacturing may not succeed if the core concepts are misinterpreted. One of them, standardization, is the pillar for continuous improvement. Synergy is expected by using ICT tools to support lean in the standardization process. However, such combination of powerful concepts could create challenges for both. The aim of the presented work is to evaluate and validate how the use of ICT tools, - a Web application prototype and QR codes, could support the standardization process at a stable phase, and ease the access of information through QR codes. Different challenges were found while testing the tool, which will be further discussed. In general, the tool was perceived as useful and easy to use. The cycle time was measured to validate the effectiveness of the tool compared to the use of printed information. The main benefit was it eases the access to information, when the organization and control of document rules make hard to find the correct information at the right time.
