  • Discovery of SiO masers in the Water Fountain source, IRAS 16552-3050
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union. - 1743-9213 .- 1743-9221. ; 18, s. 359-361
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report new detections of SiO ν = 1 and ν = 2 J = 1 → 0 masers in the water fountain source IRAS 16552-3050, which was observed with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope from March 2021 to April 2023. Water fountains are evolved stars whose H2O maser spectra trace high-velocity outflows of >100 Km s-. This is the second known case of SiO masers in a water fountain, after their prototypical source, W 43A. The line-of-sight velocity of the SiO masers are blue-shifted by ∼25 km s-1 from the systemic velocity. This velocity offset imply that the SiO masers are associated with nozzle structure formed by a jet penetrating the circumstellar envelope, and that new gas blobs of the jet erupted recently. Thus, the SiO masers imply this star to be in a new evolutionary stage.

  • On the state-of-the-art of CFD simulations for wave energy converters within the open-source numerical framework of DualSPHysics
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 15th European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference, Bilbao, 3-7 September 2023. - : European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are currently several types of devices capable of harnessing wave energy, exploiting a broad variety of physical transformation processes. These devices – known as Wave Energy Converters (WECs) – are developed to maximize their power output. However, there are still uncertainties about their response and survivability to loads induced by adverse environmental conditions, with a consequent increase of the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), which prevents in fact their commercial diffusion. As evidenced by a large body of research, marine renewable energy devices need to have more robust design practices. To address this issue, we propose the CFD-based DualSPHysics toolbox as a support in the design stages. DualSPHysics is high-fidelity software inherently suited to numerically address most challenges posed by multiphysics simulations, which are required to reliably predict WEC response in situations well beyond operational conditions. It should be noted that WECs, generally, may be connected to the seabed and comprise mechanical systems named Power Take-Offs (PTO) used to convert the energy from waves into electricity or other usable energies. To reproduce these features, DualSPHysics benefits from coupling with the multiphysics library Project Chrono and the dynamic mooring model Moordyn+. In this work, the augmented DualSPHysics framework is utilised to simulate a range of very different types of WECs with a variety of elements, such as catenary connections, taut mooring lines, or linear and nonlinear PTO actuators. Version 5.2 of the open-source licensed code was recently released, making the numerical framework publicly available as one unit. This work aims to provide a numerical review of past applications, and to demonstrate how the same open-source code is able to simulate very different technologies.Specifically, this paper proposes routine modeling and validation procedures using the SPH-based solver DualSPHysics applied to five different WEC types: i) a moored point absorber (PA); ii) an oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC); iii) a floating OWSC (so called FOSWEC); iv) a wave energy hyperbaric converter (WEHC); and v) a multi-body attenuator (so called Multi-float M4). For each device listed above, we provide validation proof against physical model data for various components of the floater(s) and PTO related quantities, performed under specific sea conditions that aim to challenge their survivability. Within the scope of this research, we present the WEC response with respect to the degrees of freedom that really matter for each of the floatings due to hydrodynamic interactions (i.e., heave, surge, and pitch), along with quantities more intimately connected to the anchoring systems (e.g., line tension) or the mechanical apparatus (e.g., end-stopper force). The quality of the results, the discussion built upon them and the demonstrated solver exploitability to a wide range of WECs show that one software model can run all cases using the exact same methodology, which is of great value for the marine energy R&D community. Finally, we discuss future research objectives, which include the implementation of automation to apply open control systems and possible applications to subsets of WEC farm arrays and other floating energy harnessing devices.

  • Water and silicon-monoxide masers monitored towards the water fountain sources
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union. - 1743-9213 .- 1743-9221. ; 17, s. 91-93
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated the evolution of 12 water fountain sources in real time in the accompanying H2O 2o and SiO masers through our FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/ H2O 2o-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project. It has been confirmed that these masers are excellent probes of new jet blob ejections, acceleration of the material supplied from the parental circumstellar envelope and entrained by the stellar jets yielding its deceleration. Possible periodic variations of the maser emission, reflecting properties of the central dying stars or binary systems, will be further investigated.

  • Water Fountain Sources Monitored in FLASHING
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union. - 1743-9213 .- 1743-9221. ; 18, s. 333-337
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated the spectral evolutions of H2O and SiO masers associated with 12 water fountain sources in our FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/H2O-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project. Our monitoring observations have been conducted using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope every 2 weeks-2 months since 2018 December except during summer seasons. We have found new extremely high velocity H2O maser components, breaking the records of jet speeds in this type of sources. Systematic line-of-sight velocity drifts of the H2O maser spectral peaks have also been found, indicating acceleration of the entrained material hosting the masers around the jet. Moreover, by comparing with previous spectral data, we can find decadal growths/decays of H2O maser emission. Possible periodic variations of the maser spectra are further being inspected in order to explore the periodicity of the central stellar system (a pulsating star or a binary). Thus we expect to see the real-time evolution/devolutions of the water fountains over decades.

  • Bow shocks in water fountain jets
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union. - 1743-9213 .- 1743-9221. ; 13:S336, s. 351-354
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We briefly introduce the VLBI maser astrometric analysis of IRAS 18043-2116 and IRAS 18113-2503, two remarkable and unusual water fountains with spectacular bipolar bow shocks in their high-speed collimated jet-driven outflows. The 22 GHz H2O maser structures and velocities clearly show that the jets are formed in very short-lived, episodic outbursts, which may indicate episodic accretion in an underlying binary system.

  • Adaptable Smart Learning Environments supported by Multimodal Learning Analytics
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the LA4SLE 2021 Workshop. - : CEUR-WS.org. - 9783030864361 ; , s. 24-30
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smart Learning Environments and Learning Analytics hold promise of providing personalized support to learners according to their individual needs and context. This support can be achieved by collecting and analyzing data from the different learning tools and systems that are involved in the learning experience. This paper presents a first exploration of requirements and considerations for the integration of two systems: MBOX, a Multimodal Learning Analytics system for the physical space (human behavior and learning context), and SCARLETT, an SLE for the support during across-spaces learning situations combining different learning systems. This integration will enable the SLE to have access to a new and wide range of information, notably students’ behavior and social interactions in the physical learning context (e.g. classroom). The integration of multimodal data with the data coming from the digital learning environments will result in a more holistic system, therefore producing learning analytics that trigger personalized feedback and learning resources. Such integration and support is illustrated with a learning scenario that helps to discuss how these analytics can be derived and used for the intervention by the SLE.

  • Wind Generation in Adequacy Calculations and Capacity Markets in Different Power System Control Zones
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: 17th International Wind Integration Workshop, Stockholm, 17-19 October 2018.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Generation capacity adequacy is a major issue in most power systems, but there are many approaches which canbe assessed. Power system planners often define target values for the capacity adequacy, which may be achieved through capacity markets/auctions, capacity reserves, or capacity purchases. Wind power contributes to the generation capacity adequacy of the power system since there is a possibility that wind power will generate in high load situations and thereby decreases the risk of generation capacity deficit compared tothe system without this source. The contribution is probabilistic– as it is with any other source, since nothing is 100% reliable - but the capacity value of wind power is significantly smaller compared to the capacity value of conventional fossil-fueled plants. In this article, an overview of the fundamental challenges inthe regulation of capacity adequacy as well as how wind poweris treated in some selected existing jurisdictions is presented. The jurisdictions that are included are Sweden, Great Britain,France, Ireland, United States (PJM), Finland, Portugal, SpainNorway and Denmark.

  • Evolution of the outflow traced by water masers in the evolved star IRAS 18043 - 2116
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Astronomical Union. - 1743-9213 .- 1743-9221. ; 18, s. 338-342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the spectral and spatial evolution of H2O masers associated with IRAS 18043-2116, a well-known water fountain hosting a high-velocity collimated jet, which has been found in the observations with the 45 m telescope of Nobeyama Radio Observatory and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We found new highest velocity components of the H2O masers, with which the resulting velocity spread of ≃ 540 km s-1 breaks the speed record of fast jets/outflows in this type of sources.
