  • International Cooperation for Remote Laboratory Use
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Contributions to Higher Engineering Education. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811089176 ; , s. 1-31
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimenting is fundamental to the training process of all scientists and engineers. While experiments have been traditionally done inside laboratories, the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies added two alternatives accessible anytime, anywhere. These two alternatives are known as virtual and remote laboratories and are sometimes indistinguishably referred as online laboratories. Similarly to other instructional technologies, virtual and remote laboratories require some effort from teachers in integrating them into curricula, taking into consideration several factors that affect their adoption (i.e., cost) and their educational effectiveness (i.e., benefit). This chapter analyzes these two dimensions and sustains the case where only through international cooperation it is possible to serve the large number of teachers and students involved in engineering education. It presents an example in the area of electrical and electronics engineering, based on a remote laboratory named Virtual Instruments System in Reality, and it then describes how a number of European and Latin American institutions have been cooperating under the scope of an Erasmus+ project, for spreading its use in Brazil and Argentina.

  • Smart Cities at the forefront of the future internet
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Future Internet. - Heidelberg : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. ; , s. 447-462
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smart cities have been recently pointed out by M2M experts as an emerging market with enormous potential, which is expected to drive the digital economy forward in the coming years. However, most of the current city and urban developments are based on vertical ICT solutions leading to an unsustainable sea of systems and market islands. In this work we discuss how the recent vision of the Future Internet (FI), and its particular components, Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet of Services (IoS), can become building blocks to progress towards a unified urban-scale ICT platform transforming a Smart City into an open innovation platform. Moreover, we present some results of generic implementations based on the ITU-T’s Ubiquitous Sensor Network (USN) model. The referenced platform model fulfills basic principles of open, federated and trusted platforms (FOTs) at two different levels: the infrastructure level (IoT to support the complexity of heterogeneous sensors deployed in urban spaces), and at the service level (IoS as a suit of open and standardized enablers to facilitate the composition of interoperable smart city services). We also discuss the need of infrastructures at the European level for a realistic large-scale experimentally-driven research, and present main principles of the unique-in-the-world experimental test facility under development within the SmartSantander EU project.

  • Hydropower Flexibility for Power Systems with Variable Renewable Energy Sources: An IEA Task 25 Collaboration
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Advances in Energy Systems. - : Wiley. ; , s. 385-405
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In order to effectively utilize hydro production flexibility, a sufficient amount of transmission capacity has to be available between the hydro-dominated part of the system and the part that requires operational flexibility. This chapter starts with a rough categorization of “base” hydropower flexibility, investigating the types of hydropower plants installed in power systems today. The “effective” hydropower flexibility available to support the integration of variable generation is a far more complex and case-specific aspect. It is discussed through national experiences. The chapter presents potential developments that would increase the participation of hydropower and discuss the ensuing challenges. Modeling a flow-based hydro system is a complex exercise, as is modeling the power system. Especially important is the correct assessment of hydropower flexibility to support power systems with a large share of variable generation (VG) and its value for storage. With increasing uncertainty and variability, a stochastic scheduling approach should yield lower costs.

  • Gambling Habits in Spanish Women : The Social Gambling Questionnaire for Women (SGQW-47), A new screening instrument.
  • 2017. - 1
  • Ingår i: Gambling disorders in women. - London : Routledge. - 9781315627625 ; , s. 22-34
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Gambling has been a common activity across societies and cultures. To better understand gambling gender differences in Spain it is important to consider cultural aspects as well as the epidemiology of gambling and pathological gambling in this country. However, it is important to highlight that no national epidemiological studies have yet been conducted in Spain as a whole and the estimated prevalence results from regional studies carried out in Catalonia, Andalusia and Galicia. Few studies have explored gender differences and very few have been conducted so far in Spain. When focusing on gambling behavior during treatment, a recent study describes different gambling patterns between the sexes in a Spanish population. Given the low number of studies exploring female gambling behaviors, the aim of the study was to provide a self-report questionnaire to assess responsible gambling behaviors in Spanish females. As for predictors of gambling behavior, low socioeconomic status emerged as the unique socio-demographic factor for problematic gambling.
