  • BiosecurID : A Multimodal Biometric Database
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Pattern Analysis and Applications. - New York, USA : Springer-Verlag New York. - 1433-7541 .- 1433-755X. ; 13:2, s. 235-246
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A new multimodal biometric database, acquired in the framework of the BiosecurID project, is presented together with the description of the acquisition setup and protocol. The database includes eight unimodal biometric traits, namely: speech, iris, face (still images, videos of talking faces), handwritten signature and handwritten text (on-line dynamic signals, off-line scanned images), fingerprints (acquired with two different sensors), hand (palmprint, contour-geometry) and keystroking. The database comprises 400 subjects and presents features such as: realistic acquisition scenario, balanced gender and population distributions, availability of information about particular demographic groups (age, gender, handedness), acquisition of replay attacks for speech and keystroking, skilled forgeries for signatures, and compatibility with other existing databases. All these characteristics make it very useful in research and development of unimodal and multimodal biometric systems. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2009.

  • Improved Segmentation of Deep Sulci in Cortical Gray Matter Using a Deep Learning Framework Incorporating Laplace’s Equation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Information Processing in Medical Imaging - 28th International Conference, IPMI 2023, Proceedings. - 1611-3349 .- 0302-9743. - 9783031340475 ; 13939 LNCS, s. 692-704
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When developing tools for automated cortical segmentation, the ability to produce topologically correct segmentations is important in order to compute geometrically valid morphometry measures. In practice, accurate cortical segmentation is challenged by image artifacts and the highly convoluted anatomy of the cortex itself. To address this, we propose a novel deep learning-based cortical segmentation method in which prior knowledge about the geometry of the cortex is incorporated into the network during the training process. We design a loss function which uses the theory of Laplace’s equation applied to the cortex to locally penalize unresolved boundaries between tightly folded sulci. Using an ex vivo MRI dataset of human medial temporal lobe specimens, we demonstrate that our approach outperforms baseline segmentation networks, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

  • The New York city off-hour delivery program: A business and community-friendly sustainability program
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Interfaces. - : Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS). - 0092-2102 .- 1526-551X. ; 48:1, s. 70-86
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The New York City Off-Hour Delivery (NYC OHD) program is the work of a private-public-academic partnership - A collaborative effort of leading private-sector groups and companies, public-sector agencies led by the New York City Department of Transportation, and research partners led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The efforts of this partnership have induced more than 400 commercial establishments in NYC to accept OHD without supervision. The economic benefits are considerable: The carriers have reduced operational costs and parking fines by 45 percent; the receivers enjoy more reliable deliveries, enabling them to reduce inventory levels; the truck drivers have less stress, shorter work hours, and easier deliveries and parking; the delivery trucks produce 55-67 percent less emissions than they would during regular-hour deliveries, for a net reduction of 2.5 million tons of CO2 per year; and citizens' quality of life increases as a result of reduced conflicts between delivery trucks, cars, bicycles, and pedestrians, and through the use of low-noise delivery practices and technologies that minimize the impacts of noise. The total economic benefits exceed $20 million per year. The success of the OHD program is due largely to the policy design at its core, made possible with the behavioral microsimulation. This unique optimization-simulation system incorporates the research conducted into an operations research/management science tool that assesses the effectiveness of alternative policy designs. This enabled the successful implementation of the project within the most complex urban environment in the United States.

  • A ring-like accretion structure in M87 connecting its black hole and jet
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature. - 0028-0836 .- 1476-4687. ; 616:7958, s. 686-690
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nearby radio galaxy M87 is a prime target for studying black hole accretion and jet formation1,2. Event Horizon Telescope observations of M87 in 2017, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm, revealed a ring-like structure, which was interpreted as gravitationally lensed emission around a central black hole3. Here we report images of M87 obtained in 2018, at a wavelength of 3.5 mm, showing that the compact radio core is spatially resolved. High-resolution imaging shows a ring-like structure of [Formula: see text] Schwarzschild radii in diameter, approximately 50% larger than that seen at 1.3 mm. The outer edge at 3.5 mm is also larger than that at 1.3 mm. This larger and thicker ring indicates a substantial contribution from the accretion flow with absorption effects, in addition to the gravitationally lensed ring-like emission. The images show that the edge-brightened jet connects to the accretion flow of the black hole. Close to the black hole, the emission profile of the jet-launching region is wider than the expected profile of a black-hole-driven jet, suggesting the possible presence of a wind associated with the accretion flow.

  • Integrating Color Deconvolution Thresholding and Weakly Supervised Learning for Automated Segmentation of Neurofibrillary Tangle and Neuropil Threads
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Medical Imaging 2023 : Digital and Computational Pathology - Digital and Computational Pathology. - 1605-7422. - 9781510660472 ; 12471
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abnormally phosphorylated tau proteins are known to be a major indicator of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) with strong association with memory loss and cognitive decline. Automated generation of pixel-wise accurate neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and neuropil threads (NTs) segmentation is a challenging task, due to lack of ground truth segmentation data of these abnormal tau pathology. This problem is most prominent in the case of segmenting NTs, where the small threadlike morphology makes pixel-wise labeling a laborious task and unrealistic for large-scale studies. Lack of ground truth data poses a significant limitation for many learning-based methods to generate accurate segmentations of NFTs and NTs. This work presents an automated pipeline for pixel level segmentation of NFTs and NTs that does not rely on ground truth segmentation data. The pipeline is composed of four main steps: (1) color deconvolution is used to separate histopathology images into staining channels (DAB, Hematoxylin, and Eosin), (2) Otsu's thresholding is used on the DAB stain channel to generate pixel level segmentation of abnormal tau proteins staining, (3) a weakly-supervised learning paradigm (WildCat), using only global descriptors of images, is used to generate density maps of potential regions of NFTs and NTs, and (4) density maps and segmentations are then integrated using connected component analysis to localize NFTs and NTs in the detected tau segmentations. Our results show high global classification accuracy for NFTs (Acc:0.96) and NTs (Acc:0.91), and statistically significant distinctions when evaluating the percent area occupied of the detected NTs relative to expert ratings of NTs severity. Qualitative assessment of the NFTs and NTs results showed accurate pixel-level segmentations of the NFTs, while modest performance for NTs.

  • Gut metabolites associated with pH and antioxidant capacity during in vitro colonic fermentation of Mexican corn products
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Cereal Chemistry. - : Wiley. - 0009-0352. ; 95, s. 399-410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background and objectives: Food is the major factor driving the metabolism of the gut microbiota. In Mexico, nixtamalized corn products are widely consumed. Changes in antioxidant capacity (AOX) in 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and Ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), pH values, short-chain fatty acid concentration, and relative metabolite production during in vitro colonic fermentation of indigestible fractions (IF) isolated from Istmo Totopos (ITs), baked corn tortillas (BCTs), and traditional corn tortillas (TCTs) were analyzed. Findings: The consumption of one piece (10 g) of any corn product may potentially maintain appreciable colonic antioxidant status (above 60 mmol TE) until 48 hr of fermentation. A portion of 10 g of corn products produces similar concentrations of acetic (3,050.43-4,181.47 mM), propionic (1,904.78-2,975.18 mM), and butyric acid (1,458.14-2,873.47 mM) at 12 hr of fermentation. Forty-six volatile compounds were also detected by solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS), and six principal components were identified. Positive correlations were found between DPPH, acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid. Conclusions: Our results suggest the colonic fermentation potential to increase bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity hence suggesting improved gut health. Additional studies are required to evaluate their in vivo effects. Significance and novelty: The study of traditional corn products will facilitate a better understanding of the potential health-promoting impact of the interactions between indigestible components of the Mexican diet and the gut metabolites.
