    • We introduce electrochromic (EC) technology for modulating the transmittance of visible light and solar radiation in window apertures, with focus on recent work on foil-type devices embodying sputter deposited WO3 and NiO films joined by a polymer electrolyte. The purpose of this paper is to present a number of new and preliminary results showing that (i) double-sided antireflection coatings based on dip coating can enhance the transmittance significantly, (ii) tandem foils can yield a ratio between bleached-state and colored-state transmittance exceeding fifty, (iii) solar irradiance onto the EC device can enhance its charge insertion dynamics and thereby its optical modulation, and (iv) electromagnetic noise spectroscopy may serve as quality assessment of EC devices.

    • Electrochromic oxide films form the basis of "smart windows", which are of much interest in forthcoming building technology and are able to provide energy efficiency and indoor comfort simultaneously. This paper introduces "smart windows" technology, which now seems ready for large-scale applications. Electrochromics is discussed from the viewpoints of materials, device design, low-cost manufacturing, and applications to buildings as well as some niche products. Finally there are some perspectives on the future role of oxide electrochromics in the built environment.

  • Critical remarks on Landauer's principle of erasure-dissipation : Including notes on Maxwell demons and Szilard engines

    • We briefly address Landauer's Principle and some related issues in thermal demons. We show that an error-free Turing computer works in the zero-entropy limit, which proves Landauer's derivation incorrect. To have a physical logic gate, memory or information-engine, a few essential components necessary for the operation of these devices are often neglected, such as various aspects of control, damping and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. We also point out that bit erasure is typically not needed or used for the functioning of computers or engines (except for secure erasure).

    • In mathematical physical analyses of Szilard's engine and Maxwell's demon, a general assumption (explicit or implicit) is that one can neglect the energy needed for relocating the piston in Szilard's engine and for driving the trap door in Maxwell's demon. If this basic assumption is wrong, then the conclusions of a vast literature on the implications of the second law of thermodynamics and of Landauer's erasure theorem are incorrect, too. Our analyses of the fundamental information physical aspects of various types of control within Szilard's engine and Maxwell's demon indicate that the entropy production due to the necessary generation of information yield much greater energy dissipation than the energy Szilard's engine is able to produce even if all sources of dissipation in the rest of these demons (due to measurement, decision, memory, etc.) are neglected.

    • In this talk, we are briefly surveying our recent results [1-3] about two very popular yet often misunderstood concepts in physical informatics: (i) The existence of Johnson noise at near to absolute zero temperature has been debated many times yet it is generally accepted [1]. We point out the fundamental problems [2] with the particular approach the related quantum theories [4] of Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem are using. Then we prove that the existence of zero-point noise would allow the construction of a perpetual motion machine [1]. Finally, we cite early works pointing out that the observed “zeropoint” noise in experiments [7] with phase-sensitive linear amplifiers is an amplifier-noise [5,6] due to the uncertainty principle, and it does not exist in the resistor in an objective way, independently from the measurement [1,2]. Thus a correct derivation of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem must include [1] the type of experimental setup used for the measurement. (ii) The general opinion is that information entropy and thermal entropy are interchangeable. This belief triggered Brillouin's negentropy principle of information [8], and Landauer's claimed principle [9] about energy dissipation during information erasure that has been debated on many occasions [10-19]. Here we show the newest and perhaps the simplest arguments [3] proving that the two types of entropies are apples and oranges and are not interchangeable.

    • Both selectivity and sensitivity of chemical sensors can be significantly improved by exploiting the information contained in microfluctuations present in the sensor system. We call our collection of methods to extract information from these microfluctuations Fluctuation-Enhanced Sensing (FES). In this review paper we discuss general FES principles and two types of applications; gas sensing with commercial solid state sensors and the Sensing of Phage-Triggered Ion Cascde (SEPTIC) technique to detect and identify bacteria.
