  • "Born sinners" striving for perfection : Criteria for the construction of a contemporary Lutheran theory of original sin
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Dialog. - Malden : Wiley. - 0012-2033 .- 1540-6385. ; 48:1, s. 97-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This essay aims to identify some criteria Lutheran theology must meet when working towards a new construction of human imperfection. It must be contextual and open towards a dialogue with disciplines seeking knowledge of human nature. Theology must take evil and suffering seriously, while still recognizing humanity’s ability to make life better. It must affirm that not only human nature, but also human culture needs transformation.

  • Det förlorade paradiset : Teodicé efter Darwin
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Svensk teologisk kvartalskrift. - Lund : Gleerup. - 0039-6761. ; 85:4, s. 163-170
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Darwin was ambibalent towards the theological consequences of accepting evolution as the explanation for the origin and variety of species. He felt admiration in relation to creation's diversity but also doubts of God's design and beneficience in relation to nature's cruelty. No "fall" from paradise has occured in evolutionary history which means that theology must find new lines of arguments when discussing the suffering and extintion of organisms. modern theology has reacted to the theodicy of nature by arguing that God had no other choice but evolution, with the inevitable suffering and death if God wanted to create complexity and diversity. Rolston and Williams argue that God's providence results in more good than harm in nature, at an overall level. Russell points to such arguments from creation theology as insufficient when assessing the problem of entropy and death as inherent in the universe, resulting in the suffering of organisms. Southgate postulates an eschatological hop for individual organisms, recognising that the greater good must lie outside creation. Murphy stresses God's radical participation in evolution as a co-sufferer. Darwin's theory has thus led to a development of both creation and redemtion theology.

  • How scientific knowledge chages theology : a case study from original sin
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: How do we know?. - London : T&T Clark. - 9780567132659
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Can and should a change in scientific knowledge be taken into account when theology reflects on central doctrines? In the paper, I argue that one of the criteria contemporary theology must meet is to incorporate current scientific knowledge - at least when knowledge of scientific facts from the time when the doctrine was established has had a direct impact on conclusions drawn from the doctrine. This might seem self evident, but in the paper I present a case study where theology still has to reflect further on the role of scientific knowledge for the deconstruction and reconstruction of theological “truth”.   The doctrine of original sin has become more or less invisible in contemporary western theology and liturgy. At the same time science, dealing with anthropology in different respects like evolutionary biology and psychology, more often points to aspects of the human condition they find problematic. One of the causes for this change of scene is that the doctrine of original sin, in western theology, depends on classical Aristotelian biology.   The paper analyses the effects of bringing in modern science, e.g. Darwinian biology, for the doctrine of original sin. What do we need to change and what would this mean for central theological issues? Two specific issues are highlighted. Firstly, what are the consequences for the doctrine on original sin of accepting our close relationship with other living beings? Secondly, what does an acceptance of “the fall” as not a moment in history, but rather a narrative on the human condition, mean for understandings of “the Christ event”?   Finally I argue that a change in science might be a necessary condition for a change in such theological doctrines that depends on scientific knowledge, but it is far from sufficient. Several other conditions must also be met, especially when theology turns from deconstruction to construction.
