- The purpose of this article is to describe the strategies of a small museum which has a focus on narratives and dialogues. Kortedala Museum in Gothenburg was the first museum in Sweden to represent an ordinary home in a modern suburb in the period 1955-1965. Thus, it is not a museum which gives attention to famous neighbours or local historical events. The main purpose is to illustrate the materialisation of the concept of People’s Home, (folkhemmet in Swedish) and its realisation in new built areas in the middle of the 20th century. In this respect this small museum emphasizes a national policy which gave many Swedish households the opportunity to live in apartments with modern equipment for the first time in their live. The importance of Kortedala Museum is that it responds to narratives of people who are still living. The objects are ‘speaking’ to them as reminders of their homes, and the museum is a manifestation of their own cultural heritage. Other visitors who have no memories of the 1950s, but who are interested in design can imagine homemaking and everyday life in the past. In this museum setting the visitors are allowed to open closets, read papers and sit down in the living-room or kitchen to feel the atmosphere of the home and discuss reflections of the past in the present with the guides.
