    • A field study was performed in order to investigate the patterns of residual salt on a road surface and the mechanisms involved in transporting the salt off the road into the roadsides. The residual salt was measured in nine segments across a road and repeated in 2-24 hour intervals, depending on the road surface conditions. The results will be implemented in a winter maintenance management model under development by the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI). The results showed clearly that the vehicles are important for redistribution of the salt from the wheel paths. A light snowfall increased the salt content in the roadway, probably because of redistribution of salt from outside the road border lines by passing vehicles due to increased wetness. The amount of residual salt in the wheel paths could be modeled rather well using an exponential function, where the amount of salt was depending on the accumulated number of vehicles after each salting occasion. A model constant was suggested to be related to the road surface conditions.

    • Half a century ago – in October 1962 – the world was on the threshold to the unthinkable: a full-scale nuclear war between the USA and the Soviet Union. The focus of the conflict was a number of Soviet launching sites for medium-range missiles situated in the Cuban countryside. Today, at first glance it is difficult to discover traces at these sites that testify to their important role in twentieth-century history. A closer look, however, reveals not only material remains but also an extensive, peaceful reuse of elements from the former military installations. This photo-essay presents some of the material evidence found during archaeological fieldwork at the missile site at Santa Cruz de los Pinos, also known as San Cristobal 3, situated c. 100 kilometres west of Havana.

    • Non-exhaust emissions from road dust, such as particulate matter (PM) available for suspension from the road surface, can be a significant contributor to traffic-related PM emissions. The sources of road dust can be many and varied and include traffic-related wear of roads, tires, and brakes, as well as a range of other sources, such as traction sanding, road salt, atmospheric deposition, migration, or entrainment from roadside dust or construction sites. The contributions vary depending on location, tire types, road surface quality, etc. Processes affecting road dust loading and emission include traffic suspension rates, driving patterns, road drainage, and vehicle spray. Importantly, meteorological conditions, such as road surface wetness, have a strong controlling impact on road dust retainment and suspension. As vehicle and road wear sources, often referred to as being direct emissions, can also be deposited on the road surface to become road dust, care should be taken in describing these sources, to avoid any double counting. © 2018 Elsevier Inc.
