  • NEW ACOUSTICAL TECHNIQUE TO QUANTIFY METHANE EBULLITION IN SEDIMENT WATER COLUMN : A CASE STUDY IN THE LAPTEV SEA, THE ARCTIC OCEAN
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Bulletin of the Tomsk Polytechnic University - Geo Assets Engineering. - : National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University. - 2500-1019. ; 329:11, s. 153-167
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relevance of the research is caused by the need to develop a scientifically based approach to quantitative estimation of bubble transfer of methane and other gases based on acoustic techniques, which allow reliable estimate of methane flow from the bubble unloading areas by sound locators and submarine sonars. The main aim of the research is to investigate the possible application of an acoustical technique based on acoustic scattering in bubble plumes vs the acoustical technique based on calibration which was applied to quantify in situ sonar observations; to show that both techniques can be used for a quantification of methane ebullition in the bottom-water column system. Objects: gas flares or seeps - the emanations of gas in the form of rising bubbles from the seabottom, which form stable regions of their increased concentration in the water column. Methods: modification of acoustical techniques based on acoustic scattering in bubble plumes and on ist calibration which was applied by authors to quantify in situ single sonar observations. Results. We demonstrate a first attempt to use acoustical techniques based on (1) acoustic scattering in bubble plumes vs acoustical technique based on (2) calibration which was applied to quantify in situ sonar observations. It has been shown that both techniques can be used for a quatitative express-evaluation of methane ebullition in the bottom-water system in any aquatic ecosystem including seas, lakes, and rivers, while the first acoustical technique gives the bubble efflux values -20 % lower then the second acoustical technique.

  • Разнообразие содержания авенантрамидов у культурного и дикого овса

    • Background. Oat grains accumulate substantial amounts of various phenolic compounds that possess biological activity and have a potential to considerably increase health benefits of oats as a food. Avenanthramides (AVA) is an important group of these compounds due to their antioxidant, anti-itching, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative activities. Materials and methods. Using combined HPLC and LC-MS analyses, we provide the first comprehensive review of the total avenanthramide content and composition in cultivated and wild oats. The AVA content was measured in 32 wild and 120 cultivated oat accessions obtained from the global collection of the N.I. Vavilov Institute of Plant Genetic Resources (VIR), St. Petersburg, Russia. Results and conclusion. The wild hexaploid A. sterilis L. had the highest total AVA content, reaching 1825 mg kg-1. Among cultivated accessions, naked oat cv. 'Numbat' (Australia) had the highest AVA content, 586 mg kg-1. The AVA composition exhibited a wide diversity among the analyzed samples. Accessions were identified where AVAs A, B and C, which are generally considered as major AVA, had a low percentage, and instead other AVAs prevailed. The AVA content in eight oat cultivars revealed significant annual changes in both the total AVA content and the proportions of individual AVAs. Using HPLC analyses, 22 distinguishable peaks in AVA extracts of oat seeds were detected and quantified. Several of these peaks, which have not been previously documented, presumably represent different AVAs. Further analyses are needed to detail these findings and to determine the specific AVA structures in oat grains.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Arctic is undergoing rapid climate change, which affects the global and regional carbon cycles. The East Siberian Arctic shelf, that is believed to store huge amounts of organic carbon in different pools, has been the subject of growing scientific interest in recent decades. The aim of the work was to study the lithological features of bottom sediments on the East Siberian Arctic shelf and to assess their influence on the spatial distribution of organic material in the study area. Materials and methods. The sediment samples were collected during the 45-day multidisciplinary SWERUS-C3 expedition on IB ODEN in summer 2014. Surface sediments from inner and middle East Siberian Arctic shelf were collected in summer 2008 during the International Siberian Shelf Study (ISSS-08) campaign onboard the HV Yakob Smirnitsky. The samples were analyzed for the grain size and specific surface area characteristics and total organic carbon content. It is shown that the subglacial sedimentation and the accumulation of predominantly fine-grained sediments prevail within the study area. Nevertheless, atypical sand zones were identified on the outer shelf. The authors have suggested several external factors, including modern and paleo ice scouring in the early Holocene, and intensive gas venting, which are accompanied by removal of fine-grained sediments. The paper considers spatial distribution of organic matter in the bottom sediments of the East Siberian Arctic shelf and its interrelation with their lithological properties.
