  • SIDH : A Game-Based Architecture for a Training Simulator
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Computer Games Technology. - : Hindawi Publishing Corporation. - 1687-7047 .- 1687-7055.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Game-based simulators, sometimes referred to as "lightweight" simulators, have benefits such as flexible technology and economic feasibility. In this article, we extend the notion of a game-based simulator by introducing multiple screen view and physical interaction. These features are expected to enhance immersion and fidelity. By utilizing these concepts we have constructed a training simulator for breathing apparatus entry. Game hardware and software have been used to produce the application. More important, the application itself is deliberately designed to be a game. Indeed, one important design goal is to create an entertaining and motivating experience combined with learning goals in order to create a serious game. The system has been evaluated in cooperation with the Swedish Rescue Services Agency to see which architectural features contribute to perceived fidelity. The modes of visualization and interaction as well as level design contribute to the usefulness of the system.

  • A multi-sampling approach for smoke behavior in real-time graphics
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: SIGRAD 2006: The Annual SIGRAD Conference. - Linköping : Linköping University Electronic Press. - 9185643173 ; , s. 17-21
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smoke simulation is a key feature of serious gaming applications for fire-fighting professionals. A perfect visual appearance is not of paramount importance, the behavior of the smoke must however closely resemble its natural counterpart for successful adoption of the application. We therefore suggest a hybrid grid/particle based architecture for smoke simulation that uses a cheap multi-sampling technique for controlling smoke behavior. This approach is simple enough for it to be implemented in current generation game engines, and uses techniques that are very suitable for GPU implementation, thus enabling the use of hardware acceleration for the smoke simulation.

  • Proteomics Profiling of Single Organs from Individual Adult Zebrafish.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Zebrafish. - : Mary Ann Liebert Inc. - 1557-8542 .- 1545-8547. ; 7:2, s. 161-168
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract The model organism zebrafish (Danio rerio) is extensively utilized in studies of developmental biology but is also being investigated in the context of a growing list of human age-related diseases. To facilitate such studies, we here present protein expression patterns of adult zebrafish organs, including blood, brain, fin, heart, intestine, liver, and skeletal muscle. Protein extracts were prepared from the different organs of two zebrafish and analyzed using liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry. Zebrafish tissue was digested directly after minimal fractionation and cleaned up (the shotgun approach). Proteins were identified using Mascot software. In total, 1394 proteins were identified of which 644 were nonredundant. Of these, 373 demonstrated an organ-specific expression pattern and 57 had not been shown on protein level before. These data emphasize the need for increased research at the protein level to facilitate the selection of candidate proteins for targeted quantification and to refine systematic genetic network analysis in vertebrate development, biology, and disease.

  • Essays on the Transmission of Human Capital and the Impact of Technological Change
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Essay 1: If grandparents have an independent impact on their grandchildren's schooling, intergenerational correlations estimated using two generations will underestimate the true level of intergenerational persistence in education. Recent research has found such multi-generational effects, but there is still no consensus on whether these estimates are due to a direct impact of grandparents on their grandchildren, or if they arise because of measurement error or model misspecification. In this paper, I estimate the intergenerational transmission arising from direct interactions with grandparents by comparing families where the grandparent died before the birth of the grandchild with those where the grandparent lived to meet and spend time with the grandchild. I find that direct effects contribute most, if not all, of the transmission coefficient across three generations.Essay 2: Sibling correlations in education and income have been extensively studied in the literature, and attempts to look inside the correlation have focused on family and neighborhood effects. In this paper I estimate sibling spillovers in education—that is, the effect of an older sibling's schooling on their younger sibling's schooling. To estimate causal effects, I use a compulsory school reform in Sweden in the 1950s to instrument for the older sibling's schooling. I am unable to detect statistically significant sibling spillovers, implying that any such spillovers must be relatively small.Essay 3: (with Che-Yuan Liang) The implementation of a copyright protection reform in Sweden in April 2009 suddenly increased the risk of being caught and prosecuted for illegal file sharing. This paper uses the reform to investigate the effects of illegal file sharing on music and movie sales. We find that the reform decreased Internet traffic by 16 percent during the subsequent six months. It also increased music sales by 36 percent. Furthermore, it had no significant effects on movie sales. We conclude that pirated music is a strong substitute to legal music whereas the substitutability is less for movies.Essay 4: (with Magnus Gustavsson) This paper shows that between 1975 and 2005, Sweden exhibited a pattern of job polarization with expansions of the highest and lowest paid jobs compared to middle-wage jobs. The most popular explanation for such a pattern is the hypothesis of "task-biased technological change", where technological progress reduces the demand for routine middle-wage jobs but increases the demand for non-routine jobs located at the tails of the job-wage distribution. Our estimates, however, do not endorse this explanation for the 1970s and 1980s. Stronger evidence for task biased technological change, albeit not conclusive, is found for the 1990s and 2000s. In particular, there is both a statistically and economically significant growth of non-routine jobs and a decline of routine jobs. No link between wage changes and routine tasks, as would be expected from task-biased technological change, can however be established.

  • The Black Pearl: An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Black Pearl is a custom made autonomous underwater vehicle developed at Mälardalen University, Sweden. It is built in a modular fashion, including its mechanics, electronics and software. After a successful participation at the RoboSub competition in 2012 and winning the prize for best craftsmanship, this year we made minor improvements to the hardware, while the focus of the robot's evolution shifted to the software part. In this paper we give an overview of how the Black Pearl is built, both from the hardware and software point of view.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of maritime surveillance systems is to detect threats earlyenough to take appropriate actions. We present the results ofa study on maritime domain awareness performed during the fallof 2008. We analyze an identified capability gap of worldwidesurveillance in the maritime domain, and report from a userworkshop addressing the identified gap. We describe a SMARTracIn conceptsystem that integrates information from surveillance systems with background knowledgeon normal conditions to help users detect and visualize anomaliesin vessel traffic. Land-based systems that cover the coastal watersas well as airborne, space-borne and ships covering open seaare considered. Sensor data are combined with intelligence information fromship reporting systems and databases. We describe how information fusion, anomaly detection and semantic technology can be used to helpusers achieve more detailed maritime domain awareness. Human operators area vital part of this system and should be activecomponents in the fusion process. We focus on the problemof detecting anomalous behavior in ocean-going traffic, and a roomand door segmentation concept to achieve this. This requires theability to identify vessels that enter into areas covered bysensors as well as the use of information management systemsthat allow us to quickly find all relevant information.

  • Effects of antimycotics and fungicides to limnic microbial biofilms – a case study of the run-off from a golf course
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: 4th Biofilm Workshop - Basis and application of biofilms to assess the effects of environmental change in aquatic ecosystems - Girona, 7-8 April 2016.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Antimycotic pharmaceuticals and fungicides are widely used for treating fungal infections in humans and animals and control pests in different areas and applications. They enter the aquatic environment either after passage through the body, or after being rinsed off from areas of application (skin, crops, farmland etc.). However, substantial knowledge gaps currently hamper a proper environmental risk assessment of the individual antimycotics and fungicides and their mixtures for marine and freshwater environments. Previously it has been shown that clotrimazole, a marine priority pollutant, affected sterol composition of marine microalgal communities already at 50 pmol/L which indicates effects at environmental concentrations. In this presentation we will discuss results from our work with limnic microbial biofilms and effects from antimycotics and fungicides individually and as mixtures. Endpoints include growth, pigment pattern, sterol composition, and species composition. Special focus will be on a case study from a Swedish golf course with a high usage of fungicides. Based on an analytical survey we prepared a worst-case-mixture study were we exposed biofilms in indoor microcosms for several days. Effects on growth and some shifts in microalgal species composition could be observed at concentrations relevant for the nearby golf area. Analysis of sterol composition and analytical confirmation of exposure concentrations are work in progress. The work is performed within the Swedish Formas-funded project “Aquatic Environmental Risk Assessment of Antimycotics”.
