  • Exploring the Performativity Turn in Management Studies
  • 2013
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • One of the contemporary “turns” in management studies is the “performativity” turn. In this paper, we present a genealogy of the concept of performativity as it has been used in management and organization studies (MOS). Starting with the work of Austin, Bateson, Goffman and Lyotard, we move on to more recent debates surrounding the use of the concept by Butler and the STS researchers Callon, Latour and Law, as well as how their ideas have been further translated within MOS. The focus is on how the concept is defined and on the areas of study where performativity has been used. Taken together, the approach to performativity employed has implications for how the concept is understood and translated. Finally, we discuss the particular ontological position of the performative perspective, and its methodological consequences.

  • Digital Transformation: Why Companies Resist What They Need for Sustained Performance
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Strategy. - 0275-6668. ; 43:5, s. 316-322
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to contribute to firms’ capabilities of digital transformation through the identification of strategies for digital decoupling and recoupling. The paper reports from multiple studies utilizing a combination of methods such as case-studies and clinical studies. The method of analysis involves the revisiting of vignettes from interactions with practitioners with the purpose of analyzing patterns in responses to digital transformation. The findings consist of four strategies employed by organizations and individuals in the decoupling of digital from their existing operations. Digital decoupling affords the organization the possibility of remaining largely unaffected by digital transformation. We also present four digital recoupling strategies that are employed to succeed with digital transformation. The study is limited by the analytical approach of drawing from multiple previous studies. The research implications consist primarily of a contribution to a better understanding of why and how digital transformation is constrained. The four strategies of digital decoupling can be used to identify behavior in organizations that limit digital transformation. The four strategies of digital recoupling can be used to instigate a more successful digital transformation. The study is the first to identify digital decoupling strategies as a micro-foundation for organizational resistance to digital transformation.

  • Augmented reality in retailing: a review of features, applications and value
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Retail & Distribution Management. - 0959-0552. ; 47:11, s. 1125-1140
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to review augmented reality (AR) within retailing by identifying, outlining and discussing definitions of AR, applications of AR that are relevant for retailers, and the value AR provides for retailers and consumers. The paper is based on a review of AR research within the business-oriented literature and an overview of current AR applications within retailing. Based on previous literature, the paper presents a synthesised definition of AR, its main elements and how it differs from virtual reality. Furthermore, it reviews and provides examples of three major types of AR applications in retailing: online web based, in-store and mobile app based. Finally, the paper identifies the specific value that AR applications may provide for consumers and retailers. The paper contributes an overview of a relatively recent but rapidly emerging theme that has not yet been sufficiently reviewed. It outlines areas for further research and thus provides value for both researchers and retail practitioners.

  • The Augmented Retail Store for Augmented Customer Experiences
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Impact of Digital Transformation on the Development of New Business Models and Consumer Experience. - : IGI Global. - 9781799891796 ; , s. 184-197
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Among technological changes currently influencing retail, the implementation of digital strategies to create more experiential retail stores has enriched customers' experiences. Interactive technologies such as augmented reality (AR) provide particularly promising possibilities. By using AR, retailers can develop strategies to attract existing and potential customers, while customers can experience shopping in augmented, immersive ways in which the digital and physical worlds are combined in an augmented one. Despite the several examples of the use of AR technology in retail, those instances have often been introduced with only a few specific features and with limited applicability. In response, this chapter introduces the concept of an augmented retail store as a more comprehensive integration of physical and digital elements. It may serve as a means to develop an augmented experience for customers and mutual benefits for retailers and consumers and thus provide value for both academics and practitioners.

  • Bicycles, cyclists and loads: a comparative analysis of cycling practices in Gothenburg and Toulouse
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Applied Mobilities. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2380-0127 .- 2380-0135. ; 4:1, s. 1-25
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports on a video-based analysis of bicycling practices in Gothenburg and Toulouse. It is based on actor-network theory, an approach that studies human and non-human entities and their contributions to social action equally. The paper examines bicycles and their interactions with cyclists and loads in the transport of people and goods. Accordingly, this paper presents methodological, theoretical and empirical contributions to the study of bicycle transportation as a possible method for developing sustainable urban environments. This paper also presents an innovative way to study ordinary social practices and describes how these practices shape associated societal issues.

  • “Cityzen” logistics: A visual archaeology of consumer logistics
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Making Sense of Consumption 2nd Nordic Conference on Consumer Research May 30 - June 1, 2012 Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper analyses “cityzen” logistics—how pedestrians carry their things. The purpose is to describe how the way of transporting goods in the city center has evolved over time. It draws on a comparative analysis of two similar large streets in the cities of Gothenburg and Toulouse from the late XIXth century to present. The chosen methodology combines archaeology, ethnography and statistics. It rests on quantitative analysis of photographs combined with qualitative analysis. These methods illuminate geographical, technical and cultural differences, but also surprising similarities between our two cities.

  • Fixing Prices: A Century of Setting, Posting and Adjusting Retail Prices
  • 2023
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Shedding light on a range of price fixing mechanisms and price display technologies, this incisive book offers a clear overview of the retail price setting, posting and adjusting processes. Based on a detailed study of a century of pricing practices in the US retail sector, it explores the anthropology and sociology of valuation practices by concentrating on the way prices are fabricated. Fixing Prices examines the relationship between everyday price display innovations, such as price tag devices, and wider market changes, including the introduction of price regulations about price display and item pricing. Investigating the historical development of price display, the book demonstrates the extent to which the materiality of prices contributes to the creation of different price-based valuation tactics. Offering a historical perspective on pricing in the US retail sector, this unique book will prove invaluable to students of marketing, economic sociology, and industrial economics. It will also benefit industry professionals wanting to expand their knowledge surrounding pricing procedures.
