  • Can a "state of the art" chemistry transport model simulate Amazonian tropospheric chemistry?
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 2156-2202. ; 116, s. 16302-16302
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present an evaluation of a nested high-resolution Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS)-Chem chemistry transport model simulation of tropospheric chemistry over tropical South America. The model has been constrained with two isoprene emission inventories: (1) the canopy-scale Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN) and (2) a leaf-scale algorithm coupled to the Lund-Potsdam-Jena General Ecosystem Simulator (LPJ-GUESS) dynamic vegetation model, and the model has been run using two different chemical mechanisms that contain alternative treatments of isoprene photo-oxidation. Large differences of up to 100 Tg C yr (1) exist between the isoprene emissions predicted by each inventory, with MEGAN emissions generally higher. Based on our simulations we estimate that tropical South America (30-85 degrees W, 14 degrees N-25 degrees S) contributes about 15-35% of total global isoprene emissions. We have quantified the model sensitivity to changes in isoprene emissions, chemistry, boundary layer mixing, and soil NOx emissions using ground-based and airborne observations. We find GEOS-Chem has difficulty reproducing several observed chemical species; typically hydroxyl concentrations are underestimated, whilst mixing ratios of isoprene and its oxidation products are overestimated. The magnitude of model formaldehyde (HCHO) columns are most sensitive to the choice of chemical mechanism and isoprene emission inventory. We find GEOS-Chem exhibits a significant positive bias (10-100%) when compared with HCHO columns from the Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY) and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) for the study year 2006. Simulations that use the more detailed chemical mechanism and/or lowest isoprene emissions provide the best agreement to the satellite data, since they result in lower-HCHO columns.

  • A 9-band WCDMA/EDGE transceiver supporting HSPA evolution
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: [Host publication title missing]. - 0193-6530. ; , s. 366-368
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The future of cellular radio ICs lies in the integration of an ever-increasing number of bands and channel bandwidths. This paper presents a transceiver together with the associated discrete front-end components. The transceiver supports 4 EDGE bands and 9 WCDMA bands (l-VI and Vlll-X), while the radio can be configured to simultaneously support the 4 EDGE bands and up to 5 WCDMA bands: 3 high bands (HB) and 2 low bands (LB). The RX is a SAW-less homodyne composed of a main RX and a diversity RX. To reduce package complexity with so many bands, we chose to minimize the number of ports by using single-ended RF interfaces for both RX and TX. This saves seve ral package pins, but requires careful attention to grounding. The main RX has 8 LNA ports and the diversity RX has 5, with some LNAs supporting multiple bands. On the TX side, 2 ports are used for all EDGE bands and 4 for the WCDMA bands.

  • Assessing sources of uncertainty in formaldehyde air mass factors over tropical South America: Implications for top-down isoprene emission estimates
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research. - 2156-2202. ; 117, s. 13304-13304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use a nested-grid version of the GEOS-Chem chemistry transport model, constrained by isoprene emissions from the Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN), and the Lund-Potsdam-Jena General Ecosystem Simulator (LPJ-GUESS) bottom-up inventories, to evaluate the impact that surface isoprene emissions have on formaldehyde (HCHO) air-mass factors (AMFs) and vertical column densities (VCDs) over tropical South America during 2006, as observed by the Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY) and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). Although the large-scale seasonal variability of monthly mean HCHO VCDs is typically unaffected by the choice of bottom-up inventory, large relative differences of up to +/- 45% in the HCHO VCD can occur for individual regions and months, but typically most VCD differences are of order +/- 20%. These relative changes are comparable to those produced by other sources of uncertainty in the AMF including aerosols and surface albedo, but less than those from clouds. In a sensitivity test, we find that top-down annual isoprene emissions inferred from SCIAMACHY and OMI HCHO vertical columns can vary by as much as +/- 30-50% for each instrument respectively, depending on the region studied and the a priori isoprene emissions used. Our analysis suggests that the influence of the a priori isoprene emissions on HCHO AMFs and VCDs is therefore non-negligible and must be carefully considered when inferring top-down isoprene emissions estimates over this, or potentially any other, region.

  • Top-down isoprene emissions over tropical South America inferred from SCIAMACHY and OMI formaldehyde columns
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres. - : American Geophysical Union (AGU). - 2169-8996 .- 2169-897X. ; 118:12, s. 6849-6868
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We use formaldehyde (HCHO) vertical column measurements from the Scanning Imaging Absorption spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY) and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), and a nested-grid version of the GEOS-Chem chemistry transport model, to infer an ensemble of top-down isoprene emission estimates from tropical South America during 2006, using different model configurations and assumptions in the HCHO air-mass factor (AMF) calculation. Scenes affected by biomass burning are removed on a daily basis using fire count observations, and we use the local model sensitivity to identify locations where the impact of spatial smearing is small, though this comprises spatial coverage over the region. We find that the use of the HCHO column data more tightly constrains the ensemble isoprene emission range from 27-61TgC to 31-38TgC for SCIAMACHY, and 45-104TgC to 28-38TgC for OMI. Median uncertainties of the top-down emissions are about 60-260% for SCIAMACHY, and 10-90% for OMI. We find that the inferred emissions are most sensitive to uncertainties in cloud fraction and cloud top pressure (differences of +/- 10%), the a priori isoprene emissions (+/- 20%), and the HCHO vertical column retrieval (+/- 30%). Construction of continuous top-down emission maps generally improves GEOS-Chem's simulation of HCHO columns over the region, with respect to both the SCIAMACHY and OMI data. However, if local time top-down emissions are scaled to monthly mean values, the annual emission inferred from SCIAMACHY are nearly twice those from OMI. This difference cannot be explained by the different sampling of the sensors or uncertainties in the AMF calculation.

  • Innate defence regulator peptide 1018 protects against perinatal brain injury.
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Annals of neurology. - : Wiley. - 1531-8249 .- 0364-5134. ; 75:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: There is currently no pharmacological treatment that provides protection against brain injury in neonates. It is known that activation of an innate immune response is a key, contributing factor in perinatal brain injury, therefore, the neuroprotective therapeutic potential of innate defence regulator peptides (IDRs) was investigated. Methods: The anti-inflammatory effects of three IDRs was measured in LPS-activated murine microglia. IDRs were then assessed for their ability to confer neuroprotection in vivo when given 3h after neonatal brain injury in a clinically relevant model that combines an inflammatory challenge (LPS) with hypoxia-ischemia (HI). To gain insight into peptide-mediated effects on LPS-induced inflammation and neuroprotective mechanisms, global cerebral gene expression patterns were analyzed in pups that were treated with IDR-1018 either 4 h before LPS or 3h after LPS+HI. Results: IDR-1018 reduced inflammatory mediators produced by LPS-stimulated microglia cells in vitro and modulated LPS-induced neuroinflammation in vivo. When administered 3h after LPS+HI, IDR-1018 exerted effects on regulatory molecules of apoptotic (for e.g. Fadd and Tnfsf9) and inflammatory (for e.g. IL-1, TNF-α, chemokines and cell adhesion molecules) pathways and showed marked protection of both white and grey brain matter. Interpretation: IDR-1018 supresses pro-inflammatory mediators and cell injurious mechanisms in the developing brain, and post-insult treatment is efficacious in reducing LPS-induced hypoxic-ischemic brain damage. IDR-1018 is effective in the brain when given systemically, confers neuroprotection of both grey and white matter, and lacks significant effects on the brain under normal conditions. Thus this peptide provides the features of a promising neuroprotective agent in newborns with brain injury. ANN NEUROL 2013. © 2013 American Neurological Association.

  • The PanCareSurFup consortium : research and guidelines to improve lives for survivors of childhood cancer
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Cancer. - : ELSEVIER SCI LTD. - 0959-8049 .- 1879-0852. ; 103:Nov, s. 238-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Second malignant neoplasms and cardiotoxicity are among the most serious and frequent adverse health outcomes experienced by childhood and adolescent cancer survivors (CCSs) and contribute significantly to their increased risk of premature mortality. Owing to differences in health-care systems, language and culture across the continent, Europe has had limited success in establishing multi-country collaborations needed to assemble the numbers of survivors required to clarify the health issues arising after successful cancer treatment. PanCareSurFup (PCSF) is the first pan-European project to evaluate some of the serious long-term health risks faced by survivors. This article sets out the overall rationale, methods and preliminary results of PCSF. Methods: The PCSF consortium pooled data from 13 cancer registries and hospitals in 12 European countries to evaluate subsequent primary malignancies, cardiac disease and late mortality in survivors diagnosed between ages 0 and 20 years. In addition, PCSF integrated radiation dosimetry to sites of second malignancies and to the heart, developed evidence-based guidelines for long-term care and for transition services, and disseminated results to survivors and the public. Results: We identified 115,596 individuals diagnosed with cancer, of whom 83,333 were 5-year survivors and diagnosed from 1940 to 2011. This single data set forms the basis for cohort analyses of subsequent malignancies, cardiac disease and late mortality and case-control studies of subsequent malignancies and cardiac disease in 5-year survivors. Conclusions: PCSF delivered specific estimates of risk and comprehensive guidelines to help survivors and care-givers. The expected benefit is to provide every European CCS with improved access to care and better long-term health.

  • Elevated serum levels of soluble ICAM-1 are elevated in non-Hodgkin´s lymphomas and correlate with tumor burden, disease activity and other diagnostic markers
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Haematology. - 0007-1048 .- 1365-2141. ; 92:3, s. 639-46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The serum levels of soluble ICAM-1 (CD54) were significantly elevated in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL, n=127) and hairy cell leukaemia (HCL, n=15) compared with healthy controls (n=31). In high-grade malignant NHL (n=79) the sICAM-1 levels correlated with the tumour mass as reflected in the Ann Arbor staging system but not with bulky disease. Further, the sICAM-1 levels correlated with disease activity as reflected by the presence of B symptoms and with other known prognostic markers. In particular serum thymidine kinase (sTK). In patients with low-grade malignant NHL (n=48) a trend towards higher serum levels of sICAM-1 was found in patients with advanced stage and B symptoms. In both low and high-grade malignant NHL, elevated levels of sICAM-1 were associated with poorer overall and disease-free survival. The present results indicated that sICAM-1 levels have a prognostic power equal to that of other serum markers claimed to be of prognostic value in NHL, namely serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), beta-2-microglobulin (beta2m), serum thymidine kinase (sTK), albumin and orosomucoid. The cellular origin and the possible interactions between soluble and surface ICAM-1 and its ligands needs further exploration.
