- Following the 38th Annual European Meeting onAtmospheric Studies by Optical Methods in Siuntio in Finland,an intercalibration workshop for optical low light calibrationsources was held in Sodankyl¨a, Finland. The mainpurpose of this workshop was to provide a comparable scalefor absolute measurements of aurora and airglow. All sourcesbrought to the intercalibration workshop were compared tothe Fritz Peak reference source using the Lindau CalibrationPhotometer built by Wilhelm Barke and Hans Lauche in1984. The results were compared to several earlier intercalibrationworkshops. It was found that most sources were fairlystable over time, with errors in the range of 5–25 %. To furthervalidate the results, two sources were also intercalibratedat UNIS, Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Preliminary analysis indicatesagreement with the intercalibration in Sodankyl¨a withinabout 15–25 %.

Fatigue crack growth testing using varying R-ratios

- A method to generate high temperature fatigue crack growth data for multiple R-ratios during a single or only a few tests for surface crack specimens was developed. Two tests were performed; one with 0≤R≤0.8 and one with -1≤R≤0. The crack growth was monitored using the potential drop method. It was shown that the results from tests with varying R-ratio gave very similar results to test with constant R. Fatigue crack growth predictions with data from varying R-test were generally slightly more conservative compared to predictions using data obtained from conventional testing. © 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

- Municipal sludge, originating from two wastewatertreatment plants in Sweden, has been burned together withwood pellets or bituminous coal in a circulating fluidised bed (CFB) boiler equipped with a secondary cyclone and bag filter for fly ash removal. Such co-combustion is an alternative to mono-combustion of sludge. The sludge is burned in either mechanically dewatered or pre-dried form. The mechanically dewatered sludge was fed with a pump, but pre-dried sludge could be fed by the fuel feed system normally used for coal. Both types of sludge were burned with either wood-pellets or coal as main fuel under identical operating conditions, typical for a CFB boiler. The focus was on ash balances and on analysis of fuels and ashes to obtain concentrations of relevant species. The presence of phosphorous (P) is of special interest in relation to trace elements, such as mercury (Hg), cadmium(Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) andzinc (Zn). For this reason a comparison has been made between these trace elements and phosphorous in the various ashes and the original sludge as well as other sources of phosphorous thatcould be used for agricultural purposes. The results show that sewage sludge and fly ash, after combustion of sludge, contain similar amounts of phosphorous as other phosphorous sources for agricultural use, but the levels of trace elements in relation to phosphorous (Hg, Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu) are higher than in animal manure and artificial fertilizer and higher than the present limits in Sweden.

Automated specification and verification of functional safety in heavy-vehicles : The verispec approach

- ISO 26262 is the new standard for automotive functional safety. This standard identies major process steps across a large number of system stages as well as safety-related artifacts required as input and output of these steps. The VeriSpec project intends to identify the main challenges for the adoption of ISO 26262 by the heavy-vehicle industry and to provide useful and industrially relevant components (methods, tools etc.) required by the standard. The project work targets two main research goals: (i) requirement formalization support, including a usable front-end for specifying requirements by using patterns, and (ii) formal analysis of realizations in form of architectural models at various levels of abstraction, by model-checking the formal representations of the latter. In this paper, we present the current challenges facing industry and justifying VeriSpec, together with a preliminary roadmap for the research.
