  • Magnetism of Fe/V and Fe/Co multilayers
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 15, s. 599-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We discuss in this paper the magnetic and structural parameters of Fe/V and Fe/Co multilayers. The electronic structure, magnetic moments (spin and orbital) and Curie temperatures as well as the magneto-crystalline anisotropy are calculated using first principles theory. Although theory is fairly successful in reproducing the experimental data we argue that the observed difference between theory and experiment most likely is due to lattice imperfections and that the interface between e.g. Fe and V is not perfectly sharp. We also present a model, based on the theory of elasticity, for analysing the structural properties of multilayers.

  • On the sharpness of the interfaces in metallic multilayers
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. - : Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. - 0027-8424 .- 1091-6490. ; 101:14, s. 4742-4745
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We show that the three most relevant magnetic properties (magnetic moment, critical temperature, and interlayer exchange coupling) of metallic multilayers can be reproduced with good accuracy by first principles theory, provided that the picture of atomically sharp interfaces is abandoned and one allows instead for both interface alloying and interface roughness. The interface of a metallic multilayer (exemplified by the Fe/V system) is demonstrated to, at best, have interdiffusion essentially over two to three atomic layers on each side of the interface. Our conclusions are the result of combining experimental work with theoretical modeling, and we argue that this approach is the best avenue to obtain accurate information about the interface quality of metallic multilayers.

  • Dimensionality crossover in the induced magnetization of Pd layers
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics. - : IOP Publishing. - 0953-8984 .- 1361-648X. ; 19:24, s. 246213-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetic ordering of a series of samples consisting of ultrathin Fe layersembedded in Pd was investigated using the magneto-optical Kerr effect. Thesamples consisted of a single Fe layer with nominal thickness 0.2 dFe 1.6monolayers sandwiched between two 20 monolayer Pd layers. A dimensionalitycrossover from two dimensions to three dimensions occurs as dFe is increasedfrom 0.4 to 1.0 monolayers. First-principles calculations were performed inorder to determine the magnetic profile, and we used a spin-wave quantum wellmodel for obtaining a qualitative description of the dimensionality crossover. The results clearly prove the existence of a dimensionality crossover in theinduced magnetization, opening new routes for addressing the influence ofextension on order.

  • Competing Exchange Interactions in Magnetic Multilayers
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 96, s. 057205-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have studied alloying of the nonmagnetic spacer layer with a magnetic material as a method of tuning the interlayer coupling in magnetic multilayers. We have specifically studied the Fe/V(100) system by alloying the spacer V with various amounts of Fe. For some Fe concentrations in the spacer, it is possible to create a competition between antiferromagnetic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida exchange and direct ferromagnetic exchange coupling. The exchange coupling and transport properties for a large span of systems with different spacer concentrations and thicknesses were calculated and measured experimentally and good agreement between observations and theory was observed. A reduction in magnetoresistance of about 50% was observed close to the switchover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic coupling.

  • Magnetic moments and exchange interactions in Fe0.82Ni0.18/V bcc(001) multilayers
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review B. Condensed Matter and Materials Physics. - 1098-0121 .- 1550-235X. ; 70:9, s. 094421-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The magnetic ordering and average magnetization of multilayers are greatly affected by the interface structure of the system. In this paper, interface effects are discussed, and their impact on the amplitude and period of the interlayer exchange coupling and the magnetic moments are investigated for the Fe0.82Ni0.18∕V body-centered-cubic (001) system. By modeling these effects by first principles calculations we find good agreement with experiments over the whole investigated range of layer thicknesses. In addition, as different interface effects give different fingerprints on the interlayer exchange coupling and magnetization, we are able to make an estimate of the interface structure of the different experimental samples by comparing experiment to theory.
