  • Upper secondary students’ discursive writing in two languages
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Writing & Pedagogy. - : Equinox Publishing. - 1756-5839 .- 1756-5847. ; 12:1, s. 47-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This longitudinal study examines one central dimension of discursive essay writing, viz. text structure. It presents results from 40 upper secondary school students’ argumentative and expository texts, four essays in Swedish and four in English (N=320) written during the students’ three years upper-secondary schooling. In addition, three students’ writing progression in eight tasks is presented as cases. The study contributes to the knowledge about upper-secondary school students’ written discursive development in two languages, Swedish (L1) and English (L2). The research is informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and the texts were analyzed for logical structure, defined as the cultural norms for clear organization of texts in more academic or formal contexts. The analysis comprised three levels: (1) the global level (text structure in steps and general organization), (2) the paragraph level (paragraphing supporting the global structure), and (3) the linguistic level (language related discursive markers). Based on the analyses of different levels, an overall assessment of logical structure was made. The results show that the progression in terms of text structure largely failed to occur and neither the choice of language or different text types (argumentative and expository texts) shaped students’ ability to structure their text.

  • A nationwide survey of CPR training in Sweden: Foreign born and unemployed are not reached by training programmes.
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Resuscitation. - : Elsevier Ireland Ltd. - 0300-9572 .- 1873-1570. ; :70, s. 90-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To determine the number of CPR trained adults in Sweden, and the willingness of the non-trained population to attend a CPR course. An additional purpose was to investigate differences related to sex, age, residential area, socio-economic classification and country of origin. METHODS: Five thousand adults in Sweden were surveyed, which yielded 3167 valid responses, a response rate of 63%. The sample was selected at random and stratified to correlate to the geographic distribution of the population. RESULTS: The mean (S.D.) age was 46 (16) years, 54% of the respondents were females and 11% were people of foreign origin. Forty-five percent had participated in some form of CPR training. Younger respondents, those living in rural areas, those born in Sweden, employees, students and military conscripts were trained more frequently in CPR. Of the respondents with no CPR training, 50% expressed a willingness to attend a course. The most common reason for not being trained in CPR was that the respondent did not know such courses existed or that they did not know where to go for training. CONCLUSION: Somewhere between 30 and 45% of the adult population of Sweden had participated in CPR training. Half of the non-trained population was willing to learn CPR but frequently did not know that such courses existed or where they were held. Elderly people, people of foreign origin, or those not included in the workforce were less likely to have participated in CPR training.

  • Structures of Solvated Cations of Palladium(II) and Platinum(II) in Dimethyl Sulfoxide, Acetonitrile and Aqueous Solution Studied by EXAFS and LAXS
  • 1991
  • Ingår i: Acta Chemica Scandinavica. - : Danish Chemical Society. - 0904-213X. ; 45:5, s. 449-455
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • X-Ray absorption edge and EXAFS spectra of the solvated cations of platinum(II) in water, dimethyl sulfoxide and acetonitrile and of palladium(II) in dimethyl sulfoxide have been recorded and analyzed. The cations are four-coordinated. Pt-O in Pt(H2O)4(2+) is 2.01(1) angstrom and Pt-N in Pt(CH3CN)4(2+) is 2.00(1) angstrom. The dimethyl sulfoxide solvated cations of both platinum and palladium contain two sulfur- and two oxygen-bonded ligands with Pt-O 2.07(2), Pt-S 2.21(2), Pd-O 2.04(2), and Pd-S 2.23(2) angstrom, probably in a square-planar cis-arrangement, as in the solid state. Large-angle X-ray scattering (LAXS) studies of the platinum(II) dimethyl sulfoxide solvated cation in a solution of the triflate salt gave Pt-O 2.07(1) and Pt-S 2.20(1) angstrom and in a solution of the tetrafluoroborate salt Pt-O 2.07(2) and Pt-S 2.21(5) angstrom, in good agreement with the EXAFS results. Neither technique gave any support for axially bound solvent molecules in addition to the four in the assumed square coordination plane.

  • Very high survival among patients defibrillated at an early stage after in-hospital ventricular fibrillation on wards with and without monitoring facilities
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Resuscitation. - : Elsevier BV. - 0300-9572 .- 1873-1570. ; 66:2, s. 159-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: The association between the interval between collapse and defibrillation and outcome is well described in out of hospital cardiac arrest but not as well in in-hospital cardiac arrest. We report the outcome among patients who suffered an in-hospital cardiac arrest and were found in ventricular fibrillation (VF) with the emphasis on the delay to defibrillation. METHODS AND RESULTS: In patients who suffered an in-hospital cardiac arrest at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Goteborg between 1994 and 2002 there were 1.570 calls for the rescue team of which 71% had suffered a cardiac arrest. Among cardiac arrests 47% took place on monitored wards. The proportion of patients found in VF was 59% on wards with monitoring facilities and 45% on wards without (p<0.0001). Approximately 90% of these patients were defibrillated 12 min. On monitored wards, the survival was 63% if defibrillated 3 min after collapse (NS). The corresponding values for non-monitored wards were 72% and 35%, respectively (p=0.0003). Cerebral function among survivors at discharge appeared to be good among the majority of patients both in monitored and non monitored wards. CONCLUSION: If patients with in hospital VF were defibrillated early in both monitored and non monitored wards survival to hospital discharge was high. This highlights the importance of being prepared for the rapid defibrillation on wards without monitoring facilities.

  • Video studies in classroom research. Hidden dimensions of teaching and learning.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Didactic classroom studies. A potential research direction. C. Osbeck, Å. Ingerman & S. Claesson (eds.). - Lund : Kriterium/ Nordic Academic Press. - 2002-2131. - 9789188661456 ; , s. 151-172
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The use of video to record classroom activities has revolutionised classroom research by making it possible to revisit a classroom practice many times and view it from various research perspectives. This essay discusses various aspects of video-based classroom research in relation to a large international video project. By describing three types of studies within the same project, we show that a combination of macro– and microanalysis has the potential to reveal hidden dimensions of teaching and learning. A systematic overview and macro-level analysis can serve as a tool to generate research questions for in-depth micro-level analysis. The hidden dimensions of algebra teaching that were identified in these studies concerned, for example, the use of manipulatives and student engagement in algebra. We describe how video data can be used for research purposes as well as teachers’ professional development, and argue that video recording classroom activities enables us, both as researchers and as teachers, to enter classrooms and increase our understanding of classroom cultures across time and space.

  • Genomic screening in rare disorders : new mutations and phenotypes, highlighting ALG14 as a novel cause of severe intellectual disability
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Clinical Genetics. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0009-9163 .- 1399-0004. ; 94:6, s. 528-537
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have investigated 20 consanguineous families with multiple children affected by rare disorders. Detailed clinical examinations, exome sequencing of affected as well as unaffected family members and further validation of likely pathogenic variants were performed. In 16/20 families, we identified pathogenic variants in autosomal recessive disease genes (ALMS1, PIGT, FLVCR2, TFG, CYP7B1, ALG14, EXOSC3, MEGF10, ASAH1, WDR62, ASPM, PNPO, ERCC5, KIAA1109, RIPK4, MAN1B1). A number of these genes have only rarely been reported previously and our findings thus confirm them as disease genes, further delineate the associated phenotypes and expand the mutation spectrum with reports of novel variants. We highlight the findings in two affected siblings with splice altering variants in ALG14 and propose a new clinical entity, which includes severe intellectual disability, epilepsy, behavioral problems and mild dysmorphic features, caused by biallelic variants in ALG14.

  • Practical knowledge meets academia : continuity and change in teacher education
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What is worth knowing, and what is considered a public good to know, reflects history and culture. This paper inquires into knowledge production and core values within three predominantly female teacher education traditions over time, and explores transforming practices and notions as those traditions were incorporated into the academic system of higher education in Sweden.  The three teacher education traditions are those of early childhood teachers, nursing teachers, and teachers of textile craft. Focus is upon forms of knowledge and local knowledge cultures within institutions of higher education. Power, knowledge, and gender come to the fore. The paper summarizes framework and key results of the research project Practical Knowledge Meets Academia, supported by the Swedish Research Council.
