  • Significance of Sustainable Packaging: A Case-Study from a Supply Chain Perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Applied System Innovation. - : MDPI AG. - 2571-5577. ; 5:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present case study-based research provides insights of the current packaging practices with a supply chain perspective and proposed sustainable packaging options that would cut down the environmental impact from supply chain operations at Midas Safety. The case study is based on qualitative research that used semi-structured open-ended interviews and observations to understand the current processes of the packaging and supply chain department of Midas Safety and how they are planning to adapt sustainability to their processes. Considering the current packaging practices, the study aimed to develop improved sustainable packaging practices with a supply chain aspect in order to cut down the negative environmental aspect such as standardization in packaging for all customers, elimination of wood pallets, developing local suppliers, change in packaging design, making the packaging more compact and lightweight, reducing carbon footprint and fuel consumption by encouraging trade through sea instead of air. The results concluded that internal factors such as alternate packaging material (like Mondi’s Aegispaper, Arjowiggins’ and Corrugated Bubble Wrap) along with the suggested sustainable packaging practices discussed above and external factors such as availability of local vendors are important requirements for successful sustainable packaging development.

  • Interfacing CrOx and CuS for synergistically enhanced water oxidation catalysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Chemical Engineering Journal. - : Elsevier B.V.. - 1385-8947 .- 1873-3212. ; 453:Part 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The sluggish kinetics associated with the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) limits the sustainability of fuel production and chemical synthesis. Developing catalysts based on Earth abundant elements with a reasonable strategy could solve the challenge. Here, we present a heterostructure built from CrOx and CuS whose interface gives rise to the advent of new functionalities in catalytic activity. Using X-ray photoelectron and absorption spectroscopies, we identified the multiple oxidation states and low coordination number of Cr metal in CrOx-CuS heterostructure. Benefitting from these features, CrOx-CuS generates oxygen gas through water splitting with a low over potential of 190 mV vs RHE at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. The catalyst shows no evident deactivation after a 36-hours operation in alkaline medium. The high catalytic activity, inspired by first principles calculations, and long-time durability make it one of the most effective OER electrocatalysts.

  • Insufficient antibody validation challenges oestrogen receptor beta research
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nature Communications. - : NATURE PUBLISHING GROUP. - 2041-1723. ; 8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The discovery of oestrogen receptor beta (ER beta/ESR2) was a landmark discovery. Its reported expression and homology with breast cancer pharmacological target ER alpha (ESR1) raised hopes for improved endocrine therapies. After 20 years of intense research, this has not materialized. We here perform a rigorous validation of 13 anti-ER beta antibodies, using well-characterized controls and a panel of validation methods. We conclude that only one antibody, the rarely used monoclonal PPZ0506, specifically targets ER beta in immunohistochemistry. Applying this antibody for protein expression profiling in 44 normal and 21 malignant human tissues, we detect ER beta protein in testis, ovary, lymphoid cells, granulosa cell tumours, and a subset of malignant melanoma and thyroid cancers. We do not find evidence of expression in normal or cancerous human breast. This expression pattern aligns well with RNA-seq data, but contradicts a multitude of studies. Our study highlights how inadequately validated antibodies can lead an exciting field astray.

  • A comparative kinetic study of SNCR process using ammonia
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Brazilian journal of chemical engineering. - : Brazilian Society of Chemical Engineering. - 0104-6632 .- 1678-4383. ; 25:1, s. 109-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper presents comparative kinetic modelling of nitrogen oxides (NOx) removal from flue gases by selective non-catalytic reduction process using ammonia as reducing agent. The computer code SENKIN is used in this study with the three published chemical kinetic mechanisms; Zanoelo, Kilpinen and Skreiberg. Kinetic modeling was performed for an isothermal plug flow reactor at atmospheric pressure so as to compare it with the experimental results. A 500 ppm NOx background in the flue gas is considered and kept constant throughout the investigation. The ammonia performance was modeled in the range of 750 to 1250 ºC using the molar ratios NH3/NOx from 0.25 to 3.0 and residence times up to 1.5 seconds. The modeling using all the mechanisms exhibits and confirms a temperature window of NOx reduction with ammonia. It was observed that 80% of NOxreduction efficiency could be achieved if the flue gas is given 300 msec to react with ammonia, while it is passing through a section within a temperature range of 910 to 1060 ºC (Kilpinen mechanism) or within a temperature range of 925 to 1030 ºC (Zanoelo mechanism) or within a temperature range of 890 to 1090 ºC (Skreiberg mechanism).

  • Effects of imidazolium- and ammonium-based ionic liquids on clay swelling : experimental and simulation approach
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Petroleum Exploration and Production Technology. - : Springer Nature. - 2190-0558 .- 2190-0566. ; 12, s. 1841-1853
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Water-based fracturing fluids without an inhibitor promote clay swelling, which eventually creates wellbore instability. Several ionic liquids (ILs) have been studied as swelling inhibitors in recent years. The cations of the ILs are crucial to the inhibitory mechanisms that take place during hydraulic fracturing. Individual studies were carried out on several ILs with various cations, with the most frequently found being ammonium and imidazolium cations. As a result, the goal of this study is to compare these two cations to find an effective swelling inhibitor. A comparison and evaluation of the clay swelling inhibitory properties of tetramethylammonium chloride (TMACl) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIMCl) were conducted in this work. Their results were also compared to a conventional inhibitor, potassium chloride (KCl), to see which performed better. The linear swelling test and the rheology test were used to determine the inhibitory performance of these compounds. Zeta potential measurements, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and contact angle measurements were carried out to experimentally explain the inhibitory mechanisms. In addition, the COSMO-RS simulation was conducted to explain the inhibitory processes and provide support for the experimental findings. The findings of the linear swelling test revealed that the swelling was reduced by 23.40% and 15.66%, respectively, after the application of TMACl and EMIMCl. The adsorption of ILs on the negatively charged clay surfaces, neutralizing the charges, as well as the lowering of the surface hydrophilicity, aided in the improvement of the swelling inhibition performance.

  • Advancement of a High-Efficiency Wearable Antenna Enabling Wireless Body Area Networks
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: IEEE Access. - Piscataway, NJ : IEEE. - 2169-3536. ; 11, s. 138325-138335
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a unique antenna that is designed to be efficient, with improved gain and partial flexibility, for use in wearable biomedical telemetry applications. The antenna design utilizes a semi-flexible RO5880 substrate material (dielectric constant, epsilon(r) = 2.2, loss tangent, ( tan delta ) = 0.0009) with physical dimensions measuring 0.47 lambda(g)x 0.47 lambda(g) . The model involves the incorporation of rectangular inverted C slots, which effectively results in a reduction of the resonant frequency. Additionally, a distributed rectangular slot is introduced on the ground plane, contributing to the augmentation of the operational bandwidth. The operational frequency of the proposed antenna design is 2.40 GHz, accompanied by a bandwidth (BW) of 320 MHz at a -10 dB level. This equates to a fractional percentage bandwidth (FBW) of 13.33% centered around the frequency of 2.40 GHz. The antenna design presented in this work demonstrates the preservation of improved gain and efficiency, achieving values of 3.67 dBi and 94%, respectively, at a frequency of 2.40 GHz. The work demonstrates through simulation and experimental outcomes that the antenna exhibits minimal impact on parameters such as gain reflection coefficient (|S-11|) , BW, and bending efficiency. Furthermore, the antenna underwent simulation and experimental testing in close proximity to the human body, revealing favorable operational characteristics. The proposed antenna exhibits substantial potential as a viable option for wearable biomedical instruments. Thus, the proposed wearable antenna design in this study offers a wideband antenna for ISM band applications, expanding bandwidth without compromising performance. Bending the antenna minimally affects gain, bandwidth, and efficiency when worn on the body, making it suitable for wearables. It also maintains a reasonably low Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), reducing wave absorption by the body. Unique features like rectangular inverted C slots and a distributed rectangular slot on the ground plane enhance bandwidth while maintaining performance during bending. © 2013 IEEE.

  • Multi criteria decision making to optimize the best runoff control measures for the Haditha Dam Reservoir, Iraq
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Hydrology. - : International Association for Environmental Hydrology. - 1058-3912 .- 1996-7918. ; 28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Iraq, the two dominating surface water sources are Tigris and Euphrates Rivers in which some dams constructed on both of them forming reservoirs. The Haditha Dam reservoir is one of the most essential sources of drinking, irrigation, flood control and hydropower generation in Anbar State, Western Iraq. Besides, the reservoir is a unique habitat with a wide spectrum of biodiversity. The objective of this study is to investigate and monitor the water quality in Haditha Dam reservoir and introduce Multi Criteria Analysis (MCA) as a means to highlight the best runoff control measures depending on selected criteria and criteria weights. Experts were interviewed for the selection of criteria and for the assignment of the weight factor and scores. Four criteria from three categories such as technical, economic and environmental aspects were selected. Results from this study indicated that a the difference in TSS and Turbidity between the dry and wet seasons necessitates the installation of runoff control measures. It was found that the soil binders, sediment basin and diversion channel are the best alternatives for controlling erosion, sediment and drainage respectively. The sensitivity analysis showed very strong decisions made by the experts for the technical, economic and environmental criteria.

  • Development and In Vitro Evaluation of Biocompatible PLA-Based Trilayer Nanofibrous Membranes for the Delivery of Nanoceria : A Novel Approach for Diabetic Wound Healing
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Polymers. - : MDPI. - 2073-4360. ; 13:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The attempts to explore and optimize the efficiency of diabetic wound healing's promotors are still in progress. Incorporation of cerium oxide nanoparticles (nCeO(2)) in appropriate nanofibers (NFs) can prolong and maximize their promoting effect for the healing of diabetic wounds, through their sustained releases, as well as the nanofibers role in mimicking of the extra cellular matrix (ECM). The as-prepared nCeO(2) were analyzed by using UV-Vis spectroscopy, XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM and FTIR, where TEM and SEM images of both aqueous suspension and powder showed spherical/ovoid-shaped particles. Biodegradable trilayer NFs with cytobiocompatibility were developed to sandwich nCeO(2) in PVA NFs as a middle layer where PLA NFs were electrospun as outer bilayer. The nCeO(2)-loaded trilayer NFs were characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR and DSC. A two-stage release behavior was observed when the nanoceria was released from the trilayer-based nanofibers; an initial burst release took place, and then it was followed by a sustained release pattern. The mouse embryo fibroblasts, i.e., 3T3 cells, were seeded over the nCeO(2)-loaded NFs mats to investigate their cyto-biocompatibility. The presence and sustained release of nCeO(2) efficiently enhance the adhesion, growth and proliferation of the fibroblasts' populations. Moreover, the incorporation of nCeO(2) with a higher amount into the designed trilayer NFs demonstrated a significant improvement in morphological, mechanical, thermal and cyto-biocompatibility properties than lower doses. Overall, the obtained results suggest that designated trilayer nanofibrous membranes would offer a specific approach for the treatment of diabetic wounds through an effective controlled release of nCeO(2).

  • Dual-drug delivery of Ag-chitosan nanoparticles and phenytoin via core-shell PVA/PCL electrospun nanofibers
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Carbohydrate Polymers. - : Elsevier BV. - 0144-8617 .- 1879-1344. ; 270
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Dual-drug delivery systems were constructed through coaxial techniques, which were convenient for the model drugs used the present work. This study aimed to fabricate core-shell electrospun nanofibrous membranes displaying simultaneous cell proliferation and antibacterial activity. For that purpose, phenytoin (Ph), a well-known proliferative agent, was loaded into a polycaprolactone (PCL) shell membrane, and as-prepared silver-chitosan nanoparticles (Ag-CS NPs), as biocidal agents, were embedded in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) core layer. The morphology, chemical composition, mechanical and thermal properties of the nanofibrous membranes were characterized by FESEM/STEM, FTIR and DSC. The coaxial PVA-Ag CS NPs/PCL-Ph nanofibers (NFs) showed more controlled Ph release than PVA/PCL-Ph NFs. There was notable improvement in the morphology, thermal, mechanical, antibacterial properties and cytobiocompatibility of the fibers upon incorporation of Ph and Ag-CS NPs. The proposed core-shell PVA/PCL NFs represent promising scaffolds for tissue regeneration and wound healing by the effective dual delivery of phenytoin and Ag-CS NPs.
