  • Interpreting the brain in society : Cultural reflections on neuroscientific practices
  • 2017
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Society today seems obsessed with the human brain. It has become a crucial component in our culture, for people’s attitudes to themselves and others, and for how they should plan their lives. Modern neuroscience has a great impact on society, not only on medical treatments but also on existential questions such as how human consciousness can be defined, where feelings arise, when life ends and death occurs.Such cultural and existential questions are addressed in this anthology. Its authors suggest perspectives and concepts to understand neuroscience, and critically scrutinize its various manifestations in society. Interpreting the brain in society. Cultural reflections on neuroscientific practices is written by scholars from art history, visual studies, and ethnology involved in a research collaboration with medical and natural scientists doing basic research on Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. There is also an afterword by one of these neuroscientists.Introduction: Interpreting the brain in society (Kristofer Hansson & Markus Idvall)1. A different kind of engagement: P.C. • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Today, it is often said that we stand at the opening of a postindustrial “knowledge society,” where private enterprise has become increasingly dependent on research and innovation and where education has become a prerequisite for success on the labor market. This idea serves as a source of inspiration when governments, corporations and institutions elaborate policies and strategies for future development. The production of knowledge is, then, seen as the supreme engine of growth, forcing scholars to appear useful and profitable to avoid marginalization. The authors of the book study the implementation of knowledge society, its instrumental ideas of knowledge and problems that are often consequences of the implementation itself. Three fields of strategic importance are covered: the labor market, the system of education and the research-intensive parts of business and enterprise.
