    • This thesis aims to develop knowledge about value-awareness in website design. To achieve the aim - this thesis investigates values in thedesign of Swedish municipality web sites through a perspective ofinherited values. It covers the designer perspectives’ intentions andreasons as well as user experiences and expectations. Value awarenessis influenced by theories where values and the creation of meaning arefocused. E.g., theories about: Genres; Use quality; Value sensitivedesign. The design process is seen as a decision process, wherequestions about prioritization of values have been considered.The study yields four main contributions. 1) A reflective concept ofvalue awareness; 2) Knowledge about genre-related design effects byusing the perspective of inherited values; 3) A method for value awareweb design; and 4) A guide to design by example. The empirical studyis a contribution for practical web site design for municipalities.A conclusion made in the study is that the perspective of inheritedvalues contributes to reflections on website design in several differentways. The perspective makes it possible to detect effects of designdecisions and it supports the identification of different designexamples which can be used to discuss design priorities,communicated values, and design effects. This study has shown that itis important to be value aware in web site design. Inspiration fromother designs, leads to inheritance of value prioritizations. Elements ofthe design process, such as technical and organizational arrangementsconvey prioritizations made elsewhere at earlier stages. These factorscreate expectations and experiences that might not be appropriate inthe context in which the web site is intended.

  • Designing the Future e-newspaper : the da Vinci Approach

    • In this paper we propose an approach for gathering data to generate user requirements for an artifact under development, in this case the e-newspaper based on an e-paper solution. Inspired by future workshops, scenario- and mock-up techniques we suggest the da Vinci approach. In addition to describing the approach we also report types of requirements possible to derive. We conclude by discussing experiences from applying the approach in the DigiNews project.

    • The introduction of the e-newspaper, i.e. a newspaper based on e-paper technology brings new design challenges. In this paper we report from two parallel studies, an online questionnaire to newspaper readers and a questionnaire to newspaper designers. The aim was to find out what qualities to bring from print and online to the e-newspaper as initial input in the design process to design a usable and acceptable artifact. The results show both similarities and differences between the two respondent groups.

  • Participatory Design of Future Every Day IT Artifacts : Engaging readers and publishers in designing the e-newspaper

    • In this paper we describe a PD approach applied in a context of designing a future everyday IT artifact with limited resources. In the DigiNews project we aim at proposing design suggestions for the future e-newspaper, i.e. a newspaper based on e-paper technology. The PD approach includes future workshop, scenario and mock-up techniques and focus groups. Based on eleven workshops with readers, newspaper staff and advertisers and three different focus groups involving readers, newspaper designers and interaction designers respectively, we illustrate the various types of results which could be derived from this approach.

  • The Challenge of Production in e-paper Publishing - from new consumption to new workflows

    • New publishing technologies, such as electronic paper (e-paper), bring new demands on newspaper publishers in the way they produce, publish and distribute their contents. E-paper as a new mobile publishing channel will not only be a technical challenge to the publishers, but will also change the consumption of news products. In this paper we take an outside-in perspective on the impact of this new channel, by taking a starting-point in possible new consumption. Based on three empirically founded scenarios of future consumption, we discuss what impact the e-paper publishing channel will have on distribution, systems of the media house, i.e. editorial, advertising and subscription, and on workflows.

  • The e-newspaper innovation - converging print and online

    • The new e-paper technology has provided the newspaper companies with the possibility of publishing a portable digital e-newspaper with the same readability as in print media. The e-newspaper is converging print and online with the best from two worlds, i.e. the overview and familiar design of the printed edition and the interactivity and continuous updates of the web. Based on six workshops and 14 interviews with newspaper managers, and three brainstorming sessions with the e-paper steering group (consisting of representatives from the Swedish Newspaper Publishers’ Association and eight Swedish newspaper managers) I will discuss the challenges of introducing this new innovation.

  • The Evolution of a New(s) Genre

    • This thesis describes and analyzes how the online newspaper genre has evolved since its inception on the Internet in the mid-nineties. The overall research question is: What characterizes the online newspaper genre evolution? The thesis is based on both synchronic and diachronic studies with a multimethod approach (including six different studies involving, e.g., interviews, questionnaires and web site analyses) intended to provide a comprehensive picture of this genre evolution. On the basis of genre theory, the thesis proposes a framework for understanding online newspaper genre evolution, integrating design (layout) aspects with publisher and audience views. Applying this framework to the collected empirical material, the thesis presents a comprehensive and integrated view of this evolution. Over time, online newspapers have evolved into a specific digital genre, with genre characteristics such as content and form, distinguishing them from other digital genres. However, this rapid development has also lead to diversities in form and function, triggering both academics and practitioners to seek ways to design for consistency within the genre. Several factors have influenced the online newspaper genre evolution, e.g., inhouse attitudes, business model shifts and technological progress at the publishers’ side. The audience demographics, habits and preferences have also changed. The layout of the online newspapers has been altered into long pages stuffed with content like news streams, headlines, photos, and services not possible in the printed edition. There has also been a shift towards frequent updates throughout the day and more content produced for the web. In addition, the thesis contributes to digital genre theory by modifications relevant to the online newspaper genre. For example, the concepts of genre awareness and genre interdependence are elaborated, a framework for identifying genre characteristics is proposed, and the concept “positioning” is introduced. Further, the thesis also contributes with implications for online newspaper design and publishing with longitudinal mappings of online newspaper layout and the habits and preferences of the audience.

  • Digital Innovation : Orchestrating Network Activities

    • Digitization of analogue everyday artifacts, i.e. when physical products are equipped with digital capabilities, has a profound impact on today’s society. Some examples of these digital innovations aimed at consumer markets are the “connected” car, the digitized television set, and in the near future, digitized IKEA furniture. Digital innovation provides endless opportunities for providing value adding products and services. However, in digital innovation there is a need to find new ways of organizing network activities, i.e. activities such as e.g. production and translation of knowledge and enrollment of actors. These activities need to embrace and build on the networked aspects and the complexity inherent to digital innovation. This requires network activities that can overcome challenges with the ambiguous and messy characteristics of digital innovation. In this thesis, I propose that the theoretical perspective of network orchestration can enlighten fruitful ways to address challenges that are encountered when organizing network activities in digital innovation. Inspired by practical challenges with digital innovation, as well as contemporary calls for research within IS, this thesis investigates: How can network activities be orchestrated in digital innovation? Two cases of digital innovation aimed at consumer markets are studied. The first case concerns the digitization of the newspaper. The second case regards the digitization of door locks. Literature about digital innovation is used to understand the context of the studied phenomenon. Furthermore, theories about network orchestration as well as activities in innovation are used as a theoretical framework to help answer the research question. The thesis is based on an interpretative perspective where a multi-method approach has been applied to address the research question. The contribution is divided into two different parts. The first part presents four categories of empirically derived network activities that address socio-technical challenges with organizing digital innovation. The second part is a proposed model detailing orchestration of network activities in digital innovation. The model is based around the four suggested categories of network activities: (1) Supporting flexible innovation networks, (2) Production and translation of layered architectural knowledge, (3) Addressing heterogeneous user communities, and (4) Harnessing generativity to leverage value. The categories of network activities can be viewed as building blocks for the orchestration process. By emphasizing both a proactive and a reactive way of orchestrating digital innovation, the model proposes a means for organizations to address the ambiguity and complexity of digital innovation.
