  • Ingår i: Systematics, biodiversity and ecology of lichens. Bibliotheca Lichenologica.. - 1436-1698. ; 108, s. 45-64
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Five new monophyletic groups of xanthorioid lichens have been identified by phylogenetic analyses using nuclear ITS and 18S and mitochondrial 12 mt and 23 mt sequences. As a consequence, the following new genera are described: Gallowayella, Jesmurraya, Honeggeria, Massjukiella and Martinjahnsia. New combinations for 26 species are proposed: Gallowayella aphrodites, G. borealis, G. concinna, G. coppinsii, G. fulva, G. hasseana, G. hermonii, G. montana, G. galericulata, G. gallowayi, G. oregana, G. poeltii, G. sogdiana, G. tibellii, G. weberi, G. wetmorei, Honeggeria rosmarieae, Jesmurraya novozelandica, Massjukiella alaskana, M. candelaria, M. kaernefeltii, M. nowakii, M. polycarpa, M. ucrainica, M. ucrainica ssp. marginata and Martinjahnsia resendei.

  • International Cooperation for Remote Laboratory Use
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Contributions to Higher Engineering Education. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811089176 ; , s. 1-31
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experimenting is fundamental to the training process of all scientists and engineers. While experiments have been traditionally done inside laboratories, the emergence of Information and Communication Technologies added two alternatives accessible anytime, anywhere. These two alternatives are known as virtual and remote laboratories and are sometimes indistinguishably referred as online laboratories. Similarly to other instructional technologies, virtual and remote laboratories require some effort from teachers in integrating them into curricula, taking into consideration several factors that affect their adoption (i.e., cost) and their educational effectiveness (i.e., benefit). This chapter analyzes these two dimensions and sustains the case where only through international cooperation it is possible to serve the large number of teachers and students involved in engineering education. It presents an example in the area of electrical and electronics engineering, based on a remote laboratory named Virtual Instruments System in Reality, and it then describes how a number of European and Latin American institutions have been cooperating under the scope of an Erasmus+ project, for spreading its use in Brazil and Argentina.

  • Cold Stress : Part V. Physical Agents
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Patty's Industrial Hygiene. - : Wiley. - 9780471297840 - 9780471125327 ; , s. 1-29
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Owing to the steep temperature gradient between the warm human body and a cold environment, a potential for high heat losses prevails that may endanger heat balance and represent a threat to human health, function, and performance. Our physiological adaptive power is relatively is relatively low in the cold. Instead, humans rely on technique, organization, and protection to mitigate the effects of cold and create conditions for work that can be coped with, at least for some time. This chapter describes the physics of heat exchange between man and the cold environment. In particular, clothing is dealt with in more detail, as it is one of the most powerful and simple means of controlling body heat exchange and to preserve an optimal heat balance. When heat cannot be preserved, the body cools, starting with fingers, hands, toes, and feet. Whole-body or local cooling, and the related physiological responses, leads to decreased work performance and adverse health effects. International standards intended for ergonomics of thermal environments are available for the assessment and management of cold-related occupational effects. The chapter ends with a suggestion for a simplified risk-assessment procedure and tables with numerous examples of preventive measures for alleviation cold stress.

  • Phytoremediation potential of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. for heavy metal-polluted and heavy metal-degraded environments
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Phytoremediation Potential of Bioenergy Plants. - Singapore : Springer. - 9789811030833 - 9789811030840 ; , s. 189-209
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Regeneration of heavy metal-polluted and heavy metal-degraded sites has remained a global challenge despite the existence of numerous conventional physico-chemical techniques that can be applied. In view of the large size of the degraded areas and the cost implications, the application of the inexpensive “green” and sustainable technique of phytoremediation is unrivalled by any other possible alternative techniques. However, its effectiveness is largely dependent on judicious selection of the plant to be used. We thus assessed the suitability of Leucaena leucocephala for phytoremediation of heavy metal-polluted and heavy metal-degraded sites. L. leucocephala has numerous inherent characteristics that can be exploited to augment phytoremediation and lower the cost of regeneration. The species can survive in harsh environmental conditions with the exception of heavily frosted conditions and occurs in a wide range of ecological settings. The species is fast growing, capable of reaching maturity in 6 to 7 months to produce a vast amount of seeds that can germinate into numerous seedlings to carry on further remediation of the polluted site. It can produce large quantities of phytomass that can accumulate heavy metals and can repeatedly be harvested to regenerate a polluted area through phytoextraction. Heavy metal-laden phytomass of L. leucocephala moulds into furniture and is used for construction to preclude contamination at the site of use. It is excellent on coppicing, thus eliminating the costs of replanting during the phytoremediation programme. The species is endowed with high proficiency for nitrogen fixation through nodule formation and can substantially revitalize microbial mass and micro-bioactivities to pave way for re-establishment of self-sustaining plant communities over the polluted sites. Its flexibility to nodulate with rhizobia of other legumes and its rhizobia to nodulate with other legumes could optimize nitrogen content revitalization of the polluted soils. However, the species is invasive and could be adopted under stringent measures to avoid its spread. It is also very palatable to animals and may thus be of limited application in the phytoremediation of areas accessible to animals. Suitability of the species in heavily polluted areas is minimal as many of the inherent characteristics may not fully be expressed.

  • Place Marketing and Experience of Place in a Virtual Environment : An Empirical Analysis of the Importance of Hedonic Meaning
  • 2011. - 1
  • Ingår i: International Place Branding Yearbook 2011. - Basingstoke : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9780230239630 - 9780230343320 ; , s. 165-176
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Experience of place is multifaceted. A place has many offerings and meanings and, for consumers, each product, service, event or place is likely to have several meanings attached to it. Typically, for a consumer, these meanings are not stable, but tend to be dynamic (Levy 1959) and therefore represent a challenge for place marketing. What particular meanings should destinations emphasize in marketing campaigns? And why? In general, almost any destination refers repeatedly to a select number of sights and attractions in advertisements. But from a traveler’s perspective there may be other attractions, as well as the familiar ones, that might be far more relevant when deciding whether to visit a particular destination. Accordingly, effective place marketing depends on informed decision-making. Therefore, relevant market research and market studies are necessary. In particular, tools that are used in market research should correspond to the multifaceted nature of place experience.
