  • Student nurses' views of a learning model : a multi-method research study
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nurse Education in Practice. - : Elsevier BV. - 1471-5953 .- 1873-5223. ; 4:4, s. 279-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to describe students´ perceptions of various assignments within a specific learning model. In particular the study focuses on how the students perceived and reacted to the assessment processes used. A learning model was developed in which the learning of nursing theory and practice was integrated with the overall aim of motivating students to integrate their cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills.A multi-methods design was applied using a questionnaire and qualitative interviews. Two hundred and eighty four students were asked to complete the questionnaire. Fifteen of the 252 students who returned the questionnaire were interviewed. The main findings were that the students constructed their own learning depending on how they understood the specific assignment and there was diversity and the students´ interpretation of f the assignments. They focused on the assignments in accordance to the demands they expected to face as registered nurses and their interpretations on the demands differed between them. The way the individual student understands the paradigm of nursing must therefore be challenged; what does the student intend to achieve and why. Dialogues in which students and teachers share their understandings of the meaning of various aspects of nursing must be emphasized in nursing education.

  • Impact of periodontal disease experience on oral health-related quality of life
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Periodontology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0022-3492 .- 1943-3670. ; 85:3, s. 438-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Periodontal research has traditionally focused on the site level, regarding etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment outcome. Recently, some studies have indicated that the presence of periodontal disease is associated with reduced quality of life. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of periodontal disease experience on the quality of life. Methods: This cross-sectional study includes 443 individuals. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed; in conjunction, the oral health-related quality of life of all participants was assessed using the Swedish short-form version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Based on marginal bone loss, measured on radiographs, three different groups were identified: participants with loss of supporting bone tissue of less than one third of the root length (BL-), loss of supporting bone tissue of one third or more of the root length in <30% of teeth (BL), or loss of supporting bone tissue of one third or more of the root length in 30% of teeth (BL+).Results: The effect of periodontal disease experience on quality of life was considerable. For the BL- group, the mean OHIP-14 score was 3.91 (SD: 5.39). The corresponding mean values were 3.81 (SD: 5.29) for the BL group and 8.47 (SD: 10.38) for the BL+ group. The difference among all groups was statistically significant (P 0.001). A comparison among the mean OHIP-14 scores in the different groups (BL-, BL, and BL+) revealed significant differences in six of seven conceptual domains. Conclusions: The BL+ individuals experienced reduced quality of life, expressed as the OHIP-14 score, compared with the BL and BL- participants.

  • Psychometric evaluation of “The 25-item Sex after MI Knowledge Test” in a Swedish context
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - Malden, USA : Wiley. - 0283-9318 .- 1471-6712. ; 26:1, s. 203-208
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The patients’ sexual life after a myocardial infarction is important for his/her quality of life. In spite of this, many patients are in doubt regarding their sex life after a myocardial infarction (MI) and the sexual information received, and counselling from health care providers has been seen to be insufficient. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of ‘The 25-item Sex after MI Knowledge Test’ in a Swedish context. A convenience sample was recruited. The scale was translated into Swedish and completed by 79 former patients from The Heart and Lung Patients’ National Association on two occasions, with an interval of 2 weeks. The scale was tested for face and content validity, internal consistency and test–retest reliability. The result in this study indicates that the instrument has good face and content validity and displayed a moderate internal consistency (alpha 0.61). The instrument showed some level of instability in test–retest reliability with 60% of the items presenting moderate or strong agreement between the test and retest. Further studies that use this instrument in larger and more diverse samples are thus needed.
