  • Ambivalence among staff regarding ageing with intellectual disabilities : Experiences and reflections
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities. - : Sage Publications. - 1744-6295 .- 1744-6309. ; 25:2, s. 192-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the experiences and reflections of staff in intellectual disability (ID) services concerning ageing with ID. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 24 staff members in group homes and daily activity centres. The findings showed that the staff were uncertain about the signs of ageing in people with intellectual disabilities; they compared the life conditions of these people with conditions in older people without intellectual disabilities. Their emphasis on an active lifestyle was very strong. The staff members also mentioned uncertainty about how to facilitate assistive devices and whether ‘ageing in place’ was the best solution. The overall theme was manifested as ambivalence where notions of older people with intellectual disabilities seemed incompatible with notions of old age in general and could be explained by the theoretical concept of age coding. The findings of this study indicate the need to provide education about ageing to staff working in ID services.

  • Impact of periodontal disease experience on oral health-related quality of life
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Periodontology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0022-3492 .- 1943-3670. ; 85:3, s. 438-445
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Periodontal research has traditionally focused on the site level, regarding etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment outcome. Recently, some studies have indicated that the presence of periodontal disease is associated with reduced quality of life. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of periodontal disease experience on the quality of life. Methods: This cross-sectional study includes 443 individuals. Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed; in conjunction, the oral health-related quality of life of all participants was assessed using the Swedish short-form version of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14). Based on marginal bone loss, measured on radiographs, three different groups were identified: participants with loss of supporting bone tissue of less than one third of the root length (BL-), loss of supporting bone tissue of one third or more of the root length in <30% of teeth (BL), or loss of supporting bone tissue of one third or more of the root length in 30% of teeth (BL+).Results: The effect of periodontal disease experience on quality of life was considerable. For the BL- group, the mean OHIP-14 score was 3.91 (SD: 5.39). The corresponding mean values were 3.81 (SD: 5.29) for the BL group and 8.47 (SD: 10.38) for the BL+ group. The difference among all groups was statistically significant (P 0.001). A comparison among the mean OHIP-14 scores in the different groups (BL-, BL, and BL+) revealed significant differences in six of seven conceptual domains. Conclusions: The BL+ individuals experienced reduced quality of life, expressed as the OHIP-14 score, compared with the BL and BL- participants.

  • Research circles as a way of creating meetings between researchers, teachers and the local community
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The school has the potential of being an important meeting point between citizens and the community. Education for sustainable development could be one way of using this potential. But this demands that booth the school and the community cooperate with the intention to create such meeting points. This paper will present one example of this kind of cooperation with focus on creating participatory action research about education for sustainable development. The Environment Department of the City of Malmo has begun to work with researcher from Malmo University with the intention of starting research circles with teachers with education for sustaniable development as a theme. A research circle is a participatory action research method where practitioner (in this case teachers employed by city of Malmö) together with researcher formulated research questions based on their experiences of their own praxis. In this case, the goal is to develop a critical understanding of teaching and learning processes about sustaniable issues as a teacher. The paper is a critical reflection about research circles as a method for developing community based learning, with a research focus, about sustaniable development. The empiric material is based on our experiences of working with the method as a way of developing cooperation between the city of Malmö, Malmö University and teacher working at schools in Malmö.

  • Empowerment-Based Physical Activity Intervention for People with Advanced Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration : Mixed-Methods Protocol
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - Basel : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of incurable visual impairment and impacts daily life. These impacts include loss of social activities, decreased functional independence, and reduced physical activity. This protocol aims to describe a prospective, mixed-methodology for studying a population with AMD before, during, and after an empowerment-based physical activity intervention (EPI). A study framework was also developed for EPI. The intervention will include 20 older individuals (age 65+ years) with AMD recruited in Sweden. The intervention period is six months and comprises adapted physical activity and social activities in a group twice a week and individual health coaching on three occasions. The quantitative pre-test and three follow-ups include physical functional tests, an accelerometer that monitors physical activity continuously for one week, and questionnaires. Individual and focus-group interviews and ethnographic observations will explore the experience of living with AMD and what it means to participate in the EPI for individuals with AMD. The chosen methodology offers a structured way for researchers to explore the experiences and factors that may provide insights into the potential of creative supervised, adapted physical activity in groups, health coaching, and socialising that are significant to enable well-being among older individuals with AMD. © 2022 by the authors.
