  • Reflective Production in the Final Assembly of Motor Vehicles - An Emerging Swedish Challenge
  • 1992
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Operations and Production Management. - 1758-6593 .- 0144-3577. ; 12:7/8, s. 117-133
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presents some theoretical principles and empirical evidence relating to the new Swedish production systems for final assembly of motor vehicles. Contends that in these production systems it is possible simultaneously to enhance efficiency and quality of working life. Briefly sketches three production forms as they apply to the final assembly of automobiles and discusses the societal environments in which these different forms of production have evolved. It focuses on Volvo Uddevalla plant as one of the main examples so far of a reflective production system for final assembly of automobiles. Amplifies the analysis of different production flow patterns for final assembly and in particular addresses the issue of semi‐parallel mechanistic production flow and parallel organic production flow as alternatives to serial flow on a conventional line assembly. A comment: This publication is authored together with e.g. senior research competencies (1) within vocational learning and training as well as (2) within time-geography with whom Engström have had long time cooperation procedures. But also personal at our department/research group (Mats Johansson) well as our knowledgeable contact person (Bertil Johansson) within Volvo contributed (he has really helped us out for decades and was responsible for the continuous contacts with Volvo in most any matter).

  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Consumer report for the company in question (the Volvo Automobile Company and the Volvo Torslanda plant) which is financed by the company and partly also by a research foundation. It is a matter of a work that in this particular case were carried out during nine years in a number of experimental workshops located outside the Chalmers University of Technology. These workshops were financed by the Volvo Automobile and Truck companies. This achievement, as the final contribution to the Swedish automotive industry after having already treated this research field/problem area for more than two decades before this particular period if time (involving several junior and senior research competencies, as well as industrial and governmental foundings).

  • Pain and its relation to cognitive function and depressive symptoms: a Swedish population study of 70-year-old men and women.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of pain and symptom management. - : Elsevier. - 0885-3924 .- 1873-6513. ; 26:4, s. 903-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of pain and its characteristics, and to examine the association of pain with cognitive function and depressive symptoms, in a representative sample of 70-year-old men and women. Data were collected within the gerontological and geriatric population studies in G?teborg, Sweden (H-70). A sample of 124 men and 117 women living in the community took part in the study. A questionnaire was applied which included four different aspects of pain experience: prevalence, frequency of episodes of pain, duration and number of locations. In close connection to this, depressive symptoms were assessed using the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. The prevalence of pain during the last 14 days was higher in women (79%; n=91) than in men (53%; n=65) (P<0.001). Women (68%; n=78) also reported pain that had lasted for >6 months to a greater extent than men (38%; n=46) (P<0.001). The frequency of episodes of pain was also higher among women, 64% (n=74) reporting daily pain or pain several days during the last 14 days while 37% of the men (n=45) did so (P<0.001). Women (33%, n=38) also reported pain experience from >/=3 locations more often than men (11%; n=13) (P<0.001). On the other hand, the association between depressive symptoms and pain experience was more evident in men than in women. Women were taking significantly more antidepressants compared to men (P<0.03). The results show that pain is common in 70-year-old people and especially in women. However, associations between depressive symptoms and the four aspects of pain experience were more pronounced among men.

  • Reflektiv produktion – Industriell verksamhet i förnyelse
  • 1992
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book, a sort of summarization of the authors' insights and experiences regarding group work as well as alternatives to assembly line work from their own scientific perspective, which was made available in 1992. That is, in the (very specific) period of time (or turbulence) while the assembly plants in Uddevalla and Kalmar were closed down (the former assembly plant was closed down first, while the other was shut down approximate a year later). This book has been published by Volvo (AB Volvo Media, ISBN-number: 91 9761 604). It has been published by Arbetslivsutveckling with the editors Lars Cambert and Glenn Carlsson at this department. Moreover, the content has been validated by a number of Volvo experts and discussed at a seminary (among other things, each of these experts had to provide written comments to the two editors etc.). A comment: This publication is authored together with e.g. senior research competencies (1) within vocational learning and training as well as (2) within time-geography with whom Engström have had long time cooperation procedures. • Alternatives to Line Assembly: Some Swedish examples
  • 1996
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - 1872-8219 .- 0169-8141. ; 17:3, s. 235-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, some criticism of Lean production has occurred, focusing among other things on the working conditions and the susceptibility of traditional assembly work in a society upgrading the demands for a more humanized work. Recently, this criticism has also concerned the technical aspects of this type of manufacturing. Because of this, alternatives to line assembly merit some attention. Experiences from some innovative production systems operated in the Swedish automotive industry during the last two decades are of particular interest. These unconventional production systems feature autonomous work groups and extended work cycles. These types of production systems are elucidated in detail by means of e.g nuance the concept of utilising buffers, i.e. there are different types of buffers (or buffer functions) as is classified (or clarified) in this publications.
