  • Miljöanalys med hjälp av kärnfysikalisk teknik - PIXE
  • 1981
  • Ingår i: Ordo. - 0345-8970. ; 15:3, s. 3-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Film Extrusion of Crambe abyssinica/Wheat Gluten Blends
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Visualized Experiments. - : JOURNAL OF VISUALIZED EXPERIMENTS. - 1940-087X. ; :119
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Crambe abyssinica is a plant with potential for use in industrial (non-food) plant oil production. The side stream from this oil production is a high-protein crambe meal that has limited value, as it is not fit for food or feed use. However, it contains proteins that could potentially make it a suitable raw material for higher-value products. The purpose of this study was to find methods of making this side stream into extruded films, showing that products with a higher value can be produced. The study mainly considered the development of material compositions and methods of preparing and extruding the material. Wheat gluten was added as a supportive protein matrix material, together with glycerol as a plasticizer and urea as a denaturant. The extrudate was evaluated with respect to mechanical (tensile testing) and oxygen barrier properties, and the extrudate structure was revealed visually and by scanning electron microscopy. A denser, more homogeneous material had a lower oxygen transmission rate, higher strength, and higher extensibility. The most homogeneous films were made at an extruder die temperature of 125-130 degrees C. It is shown here that a film can be extruded with promising mechanical and oxygen barrier properties, the latter especially after a final compression molding step.

  • Evaluation of materials supply systems during product development projects
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Production Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0020-7543 .- 1366-588X. ; 44:5, s. 903-917
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this paper is to analyse how materials supply systems can be evaluated during product development projects in a concurrent engineering context. The focus is on performance assessment of materials supply systems and the input data required. A case study was conducted in close cooperation with a company and two performance measures were assessed during the concept definition phase and recalculated during the product and process validation phase. The results show that preliminary input data can be used to calculate performance measures by means of the following approaches: indicators, standards or scenarios. Furthermore, it is discussed how performance assessment can assist the materials supply systems design process in a concurrent engineering context by facilitating early problem discovery, early decision-making, and common understanding.

  • Development of bioplastics based on agricultural side-stream products : Film extrusion of Crambe abyssinica/wheat gluten blends for packaging purposes
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Polymer Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0021-8995 .- 1097-4628. ; 133:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this work was to add economic value to crambe meal, the protein-rich byproduct from the industrial extraction of Crambe abyssinica seed oil, by using it as a potential feedstock for oilseed meal-based plastics. The feasibility to produce continuous, flexible plastic films of glycerol-plasticized crambe meal blended with wheat gluten (WG) to improve extrudate properties and urea as a protein denaturant using extrusion was investigated. The effect of process parameters and blend composition were studied with regard to the extrusion performance and the film properties. Tensile properties and oxygen permeability were determined, and the film morphology was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy. A die temperature between 125 and 130°C resulted in films with the most homogeneous surfaces and highest tensile strength and extensibility. The use of compression molding after extrusion improved the surface quality and film strength and lowered the oxygen permeability. A decrease in the plasticizer content (from 30 to 20 wt %) improved the extrudability and showed the highest tensile strength, whereas the extensibility was essentially unaffected. The importance of the presence of WG was shown by the fact that strength and extensibility decreased when the crambe content was increased from 60 to 80 wt %. It was shown that crambe-based biopolymer blends could be extruded as continuous flexible plastic films that exhibited promising mechanical and oxygen barrier properties. The operational window was, however, found to be narrow. The results provide a first basis to further develop the process and the blend toward industrial applications, for example, as packaging materials.

  • Cellulose nanofibril reinforced composite electrolytes for lithium ion battery applications
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry A. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 2050-7488 .- 2050-7496. ; 2:33, s. 13556-13564
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study describes the synthesis and characterization of a series of four composite electrolytes for lithium ion battery applications. The two-phase electrolytes are composed of a soft, ionic conductive poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) matrix having stiff nanofibrillated cellulose (CNF) paper as reinforcement to provide mechanical integrity. The reinforcing CNF is modified in order to create covalent bonds between the phases which is particularly beneficial when swelling the composite with a liquid electrolyte to enhance the ionic conductivity. After swelling the composite polymer electrolyte, forming a gelled structure, values of ionic conductivity at 5 x 10(-5) S cm(-1) and an elastic modulus around 400 MPa at 25 degrees C are obtained.

  • Extrusion of Porous Protein-Based Polymers and Their Liquid Absorption Characteristics
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Polymers. - : MDPI. - 2073-4360. ; 12:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The production of porous wheat gluten (WG) absorbent materials by means of extrusion processing is presented for the future development of sustainable superabsorbent polymers (SAPs). Different temperatures, formulations, and WG compositions were used to determine a useful protocol that provides the best combination of porosity and water swelling properties. The most optimal formulation was based on 50 wt.% WG in water that was processed at 80 degrees C as a mixture, which provided a porous core structure with a denser outer shell. As a green foaming agent, food-grade sodium bicarbonate was added during the processing, which allowed the formation of a more open porous material. This extruded WG material was able to swell 280% in water and, due to the open-cell structure, 28% with non-polar limonene. The results are paving the way towards production of porous bio macromolecular structures with high polar/non-polar liquid uptake, using extrusion as a solvent free and energy efficient production technique without toxic reagents.

  • Tailored Magnetic Nanoparticles for Direct and Sensitive Detection of Biomolecules in Biological Samples
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Nano letters (Print). - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 8:10, s. 3423-3428
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We developed nanoparticles with tailored magnetic properties for sensitive detection of biomolecules directly in biological samples in a single step. Thermally blocked nanoparticles obtained by thermal hydrolysis are mixed with sample solutions and the variation of the magnetic relaxation due to surface binding is used to detect the presence of biomolecules. The binding events significantly increase the hydrodynamic volume of nanoparticles, thus changing their Brownian relaxation frequency which is measured by a specifically developed AC-susceptometer.The system was tested for the presence of Brucella antibodies in serum samples from infected cows and the surface of the nanoparticles was functionalized with lipopolysaccarides (LPS) from Brucella abortus. The hydrodynamic volume of functionalized particles increased by 25-35% as a result of the binding of the antibodies, as measured by changes in the susceptibility in an alternating magnetic field. The method has shown high sensitivity, with detection limit of 7 nmol·L-1 in serum without any pre-treatment of the biological samples. The detection method is very sensitive, cost-efficient and versatile, giving a direct indication if the animal is infected or not, making it suitable for point-of care applications. The functionalization of tailored magnetic nanoparticles can be modified to suit numerous homogenous assays for a wide range of applications.
