  • Inceldom and involuntary singlehood in times of precarious love
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In recent years, a line of serious incidents of violence towards women have been committed by men who self-identify as involuntary celibates, or ‘incels’. Incels are part of what is described as a political sub-culture or online community, marked by misogyny and driven by affects like resentment, shame and revenge. The incel communities consist of men who feel they are unable to form romantic and sexual attachments with women, who blame women and feminism for this failure and – contrary to a feminist world view – describe this as a proof of a contemporary gynocentric order where men are victims and women powerful. This presentation draws the theoretical contours of a research project on involuntary celibacy and singlehood that is in its starting phase. While the emerging body of incel research and commentary is focused on the ideological distortions at play in incel men’s descriptions of themselves as victims on a mating market where women hold the power (Chang 2020; Menzie 2020; Witt 2020), we set out to take incel men’s claims about vulnerability more seriously, analysing them in light of structural transformations of the conditions of intimacy which have made intimacy an increasingly precarious matter. We situate our analysis of incelhood within research highlighting that post-industrial western societies find themselves in a state of what we call ‘precarious love’, in which, due to cultural, economic and technological changes, love and erotic bonding has become both increasingly important for people’s sense of security and well-being and increasingly characterized by insecurity (Bauman 2003; Gunnarsson et al 2018; Illouz 2012, 2019). In our presentation we aim to show why and how the incel phenomenon and broader experiences of involuntary celibacy and singlehood can be fully understood and explained only in light of these transformations of the conditions of intimacy.

  • The assessment of higher-order thinking in online EFL courses
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Innovation in Language Learning International Conference, 9-10 November 2023, Florence (Italy) and online..
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The teaching of higher-order thinking skills has been identified as an important educational goal and studies within language learning indicate that these skills have an influence on language learning. While there are indications that assessment tasks in online courses often focus on lower-order thinking skills, little is still known about if and how thinking skills are assessed in online EFL courses. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate the use of higher-order thinking assessment in these courses. Based on the revised version of Bloom’s Taxonomy, assessment tasks used in EFL courses at Swedish universities have been classified into higher- and lower-order thinking tasks. The analysis of the data proved that three of four courses included more assessment tasks focusing on higher-order thinking than on lower-order thinking. However, a significant difference was detected between literature and linguistic modules. These differences seem to be partially based on the different assessment formats used in literature and linguistic modules. An investigation of literature and linguistic teachers’ views on higher-order thinking skills, reveals small differences in how these skills are understood. The present study provides insight into how thinking skills are assessed and developed in online language courses.

  • Automatic Extraction of Synonyms from an Easy-to-Read Corpus
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Sixth Swedish Language Technology Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents two novel methods aimed at extracting comprehensible synonyms to regular words, as a step towards automatic text simplification. The methods are inspired by previous work on synonym extraction and make use of bilingual dictionaries, as well as distributional semantic similarity between words. Human layman knowledge was used to evaluate the synonym candidates extracted by the methods, which proved to be perceived as synonymous to a high degree. Both methods showed promising results and qualities, and have potential to be used to further improve automatic text simplification.

  • Equality equals quality? Tolkningar av kön- och genusperspektiv som indikator på vetenskaplig kvalitet i forskningsansökningar
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Feminist policy analysis.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract

  • The epistemic standards of the incel movement
  • 2024
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In recent years, men identifying as involuntary celibates, or 'incels,' have been involved in serious incidents of violence against women. This group is characterized as a poltical sub-culture or onlinecommunity, marked by misogyny and driven by emotions such as resentment, shame, and revenge. The research on online incel communities is expanding, revealing their promotion of sexist, anti-feminist, and pro-violence worldviews, along with hegemonic and toxic forms of masculinity. A notable feature of the incel community is its intricate 'theoretical framework' used to elucidate the plight of its members. Within this framework, incel men are depicted as voiceless, excluded victims and losers in the (hetero)sexual market. This marginalization is atributed to their perceived biological inferiority and increased subjugation of men within a context shaped by hegemonic feminism. While existing research has extensively studied the content of incel theorizing, litle atention has been devoted to understanding how the incel community constructs its worldview. Our article aims to fill this gap by examining the incel worldview through a sociology of knowledge lens. A netnographic study of the digital incel forum Incels.is reveals how users establish their knowledge claims and the sources and methods they employ. Additionally, we explore the implicit or explicit epistemic paradigms at play, emphasizing the interactions and tensions between different paradigms. Notably, we investigate how incels leverage both conventional scientific principles and personal experiences, mirroring feminist approaches, to make claims about societal structures.
