  • Window flow control : Macroscopic properties from microscopic factors
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 27TH IEEE CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER COMMUNICATIONS (INFOCOM). - 9781424420254 ; , s. 538-546
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper studies window flow control focusing on bridging the gap between microscopic factors such as burstiness in sub-RTT timescales, and observable macroscopic properties such as steady state bandwidth sharing and flow level stability. Using new models, we analytically capture notable effects of microscopic behavior on macroscopic quantities. For loss-based protocols, we calculate the loss synchronization rate for different flows and use it to quantitatively explain the unfair bandwidth sharing between paced and unpaced TCP flows. For delay-based protocols, we show that the ratios of round trip delays are critical to the stability of the system. These results deepen the fundamental understanding of congestion control systems. Packet level simulations are used to verify our theoretical claims.

  • High-Resolution Protein Structure Determination by Serial Femtosecond Crystallography
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Science. - : American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). - 0036-8075 .- 1095-9203. ; 337:6092, s. 362-364
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Structure determination of proteins and other macromolecules has historically required the growth of high-quality crystals sufficiently large to diffract x-rays efficiently while withstanding radiation damage. We applied serial femtosecond crystallography (SFX) using an x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) to obtain high-resolution structural information from microcrystals (less than 1 micrometer by 1 micrometer by 3 micrometers) of the well-characterized model protein lysozyme. The agreement with synchrotron data demonstrates the immediate relevance of SFX for analyzing the structure of the large group of difficult-to-crystallize molecules.

  • Queue Dynamics With Window Flow Control
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. - 1063-6692 .- 1558-2566. ; 18:5, s. 1422-1435
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper develops a new model that describes the queueing process of a communication network when data sources use window flow control. The model takes into account the burstiness in sub-round-trip time (RTT) timescales and the instantaneous rate differences of a flow at different links. It is generic and independent of actual source flow control algorithms. Basic properties of the model and its relation to existing work are discussed. In particular, for a general network with multiple links, it is demonstrated that spatial interaction of oscillations allows queue instability to occur even when all flows have the same RTTs and maintain constant windows. The model is used to study the dynamics of delay-based congestion control algorithms. It is found that the ratios of RTTs are critical to the stability of such systems, and previously unknown modes of instability are identified. Packet-level simulations and testbed measurements are provided to verify the model and its predictions.

  • New bio-based plastics, from a non-edible plant oil side-stream, for film extrusion
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: 19th IAPRI World Conference on Packaging 2014. - : Victoria University. - 9781510821316 ; , s. 586-590
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Renewable sourced PET, PA, PE, starch blends, etc, are fastly growing due to the processability and final performance, that is similar to their petroleum derived options. A bit in the shadow of the development of these plastics, development is ongoing on another group of plastics, made directly of the side-streams of agricultural products: oil plant residues and proteins. They can be used in edible applications but not all of them are suitable for food or forage. Industrial oilseed meal from crambe abyssinica contains relatively high levels of protein that is not suitable for human or animal consumption due to the presence of anti-nutritional compounds. This paper presents research on crambe meal as a base for new plastics, developed to extrude continuous, flexible plastic films based on crambe meal, blended with vital wheat gluten as an elastic component and urea as a protein denaturant. The effect of process parameters, such as screw speed, die temperature and pressure, and the effect of components were studied with regards to the final performance of the film extrudates. E.g. mechanical properties, oxygen permeability and moisture content were determined and surface and cross-section morphologies were examined with electron microscopy. The results showed that crambe-based blends can be extruded as continuous, flexible plastic films, which exhibit barrier properties towards oxygen. Recipes and methods for pelletizing of master batches for post-converting (e.g. extrusion or compression molding) were successfully developed. Addition of a renewable plasticizer improved the extrusion performance and resulted in less hygroscopic films, which further showed the overall highest tensile strength while the extensibility was nearly unaffected. The results provide a first basis to further develop the process and the blend towards potential industrial applications, for example as packaging materials to trays, pots and similar type of packages.

  • Event-Triggered Distributed Model Predictive Control for Platoon Coordination at Hubs in a Transport System
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: 2021 60TH IEEE CONFERENCE ON DECISION AND CONTROL (CDC). - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 1198-1204
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper considers the problem of hub-based platoon coordination for a large-scale transport system, where trucks have individual utility functions to optimize. An event-triggered distributed model predictive control method is proposed to solve the optimal scheduling of waiting times at hubs for individual trucks. In this distributed framework, trucks are allowed to decide their waiting times independently and only limited information is shared between trucks. Both the predicted reward gained from platooning and the predicted cost for waiting at hubs are included in each truck's utility function. The performance of the coordination method is demonstrated in a simulation with one hundred trucks over the Swedish road network.

  • GISOO : A virtual testbed for wireless cyber-physical systems
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Industrial Electronics Society, IECON 2013 - 39th Annual Conference of the IEEE. - : IEEE. - 9781479902248 ; , s. 5588-5593
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The increasing demand for wireless cyber-physical systems requires correct design, implementation and validation of computation, communication and control methods. Traditional simulation tools, which focus on either computation, communication or control, are insufficient when the three aspects interact. Efforts to extend the traditional tools to cover multiple domains, e.g., from simulating only control aspects to simulating both control and communication, often rely on simplistic models of a small subset of possible communication solutions. We introduce GISOO, a virtual testbed for simulation of wireless cyber-physical systems that integrates two state-of-the art simulators, Simulink and COOJA. GISOO enables users to evaluate actual embedded code for the wireless nodes in realistic cyber-physical experiments, observing the effects of both the control and communication components. In this way, a wide range of communication solutions can be evaluated without developing abstract models of their control-relevant aspects, and changes made to the networking code in simulations is guaranteed to be translated into production code without errors. A double-tank laboratory experimental setup controlled over a multi-hop relay wireless network is used to validate GISOO and demonstrate its features.

  • Development of bioplastics based on agricultural side-stream products : Film extrusion of Crambe abyssinica/wheat gluten blends for packaging purposes
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Applied Polymer Science. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0021-8995 .- 1097-4628. ; 133:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this work was to add economic value to crambe meal, the protein-rich byproduct from the industrial extraction of Crambe abyssinica seed oil, by using it as a potential feedstock for oilseed meal-based plastics. The feasibility to produce continuous, flexible plastic films of glycerol-plasticized crambe meal blended with wheat gluten (WG) to improve extrudate properties and urea as a protein denaturant using extrusion was investigated. The effect of process parameters and blend composition were studied with regard to the extrusion performance and the film properties. Tensile properties and oxygen permeability were determined, and the film morphology was analyzed with scanning electron microscopy. A die temperature between 125 and 130°C resulted in films with the most homogeneous surfaces and highest tensile strength and extensibility. The use of compression molding after extrusion improved the surface quality and film strength and lowered the oxygen permeability. A decrease in the plasticizer content (from 30 to 20 wt %) improved the extrudability and showed the highest tensile strength, whereas the extensibility was essentially unaffected. The importance of the presence of WG was shown by the fact that strength and extensibility decreased when the crambe content was increased from 60 to 80 wt %. It was shown that crambe-based biopolymer blends could be extruded as continuous flexible plastic films that exhibited promising mechanical and oxygen barrier properties. The operational window was, however, found to be narrow. The results provide a first basis to further develop the process and the blend toward industrial applications, for example, as packaging materials.

  • ACK-clocking dynamics: Modelling the interaction between windows and the network
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: 27TH IEEE CONFERENCE ON COMPUTER COMMUNICATIONS (INFOCOM). - 9781424420254 ; , s. 181-185
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel continuous time fluid flow model of the dynamics of the interaction between ACK-clocking and the link buffer is presented.. A fundamental integral equation relating the instantaneous flow rate and the window dynamics is derived. Properties of the model, such as well-posedness and stability, are investigated. Packet level experiments verily that this new model is more accurate than existing models, correctly predicting qualitatively different behaviors, for example when round trill delays are heterogeneous.
