- Manufacturers are facing increasing pressures to adapt their operations to meet sustainability goals. Research and developments on industrial digitalization (aka Industry 4.0) present new opportunities to create and capture value in ever-more complex and connected industrial systems. However, digitalization does not always align with sustainability, and case studies combining these two topics are still scarce. To address these gaps, we adopted a bottom-up approach to (1) identify existing environmental solutions and their implementation challenges by reviewing 208 empirical studies, and (2) formulate eight propositions to guide further work so that digitalization supports environmental improvements more systematically. Finally, a framework for Digitalized Sustainable Manufacturing consisting of four research themes is proposed, pointing to future research needed to align industrial development with sustainable development goals. The propositions and framework aim to structure and focus future research by targeting specifically the challenges encountered when implementing environmental solutions in manufacturing.

- In pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, the flow properties of powder streams moving in the manufacturing pipes directly impact the properties of the final drug product, and there is a need for real-time non-invasive monitoring of the powder flow properties with process analytical tools. In this study, we propose a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) Doppler radar system with a center frequency of 340 GHz to measure the flow properties of falling powder streams in a vertical transparent tube. We successfully measured the velocity profile and powder flow density variation along the height of the tube with a spatial resolution of about 5 mm. In conclusion, the terahertz FMCW Doppler radar system was shown to be highly promising for real-time sensing of flow properties of powder streams in the pharmaceutical manufacturing processes.

Oxidation of FeCrAl foils at 500-900 degrees C in dry O-2 and O-2 with 40% H2O

- High temperature resistant FeCrAl alloys are frequently used in high temperature applications Such as heating elements and metal based catalytic converter bodies. When exposed to high temperatures an adherent, slowly growing, dense aluminium oxide layer forms on the surface, which protects the underlying alloy from severe degradation. The composition, structure and properties of the formed oxide layer are strongly dependent on the alloy composition, temperature and oxidation environment. In this study, the Sandvik 0C404 FeCrAl alloy, in the form of 50 mu m thick foils, was exposed isothermally in the temperature range 500-900 degrees C for 168 hours in dry O-2 and in O-2 with 40 vol.% H2O. The surface morphology, composition and microstructure of the grown oxide scales were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). The oxidation process was faster at 900 degrees C than at 500 and 700 degrees C. At 500 degrees C a thin (10-20 nm) mixed oxide of Fe, Cr and Al was formed. Exposure at 700 degrees C resulted ill a similar (40-50 nm) duplex oxide, in both dry O-2 and in O-2 With 40 vol.% H2O. These oxide scales consisted of all inner and an outer relatively pure alumina separated by a Cr-rich band. This type of duplex oxide scale also formed at 900 degrees C with a thin inward growing alpha-Al2O3 at the oxide/metal interface and an outward growing layer outside a Cr-rich band. However, at 900 degrees C the Outward growing layer showed two types of oxide morphologies; a thin smooth base oxide and a much thicker nodular oxide grown on top of substrate ridges. In dry O-2 atmosphere, the main part of this outward growing layer had transformed to alpha-Al2O3. Only in the outer part of the thick oxide nodules, metastable alumina was found. When exposed in the presence of water vapour the main pall of the metastable alumina remained untransformed.

- En ergonomisk och teknisk utvärdering genomfördes av en förändring av produktionssystemet i ett elektronikföretag som innebar en ökad automatisering. Själva förändringsprocessen utvärderades också.Automatiseringen av den manuella monteringen och transporten minskade exponeringstiden för manuell montering på systemnivå samt ökade produktiviteten. För den kvarstående manuella monteringen ökade dock repetitiviteten och ensidigheten. Montörerna upplevde också att den psykiska arbetsbelastningen var större i det nya systemet jämfört med det gamla. De ansåg också att de manuella monteringsstationerna som helhet var dåliga arbetsuppgifter.I den studerade förändringsprocessen var bristen på kontinuitet i arbetsledning ett av avdelningens huvudproblem. Arbetsledaren fick också sätta sin prägel på hur produktionsmålen skulle uppfyllas och hur arbetsförhållandena skulle utformas. Därigenom blev det arbetsledaren och inte den handlingsplan med arbetsrotation som en arbetsorganisationsgrupp utformade som avgjorde hur arbetsorganisationen utformades.

Place Innovative Synergies for City Center Attractiveness : A Matter of Experiencing Retail and Retailing Experiences

- By investigating the occurrence of place innovative synergies between retail and tourism in a small-sized Swedish city, this article advances knowledge on how city center attractiveness can be enforced in a rural context with competing online shopping and suburban/out-of-town shopping centers. Previous studies of city center attractiveness, place innovation, and social innovation help distinguish innovative intertwinement of correlated trends of experiencing retail and retailing experiences, augmenting customer experiences through place-based characteristics. Interviews, workshops, and participatory observations with entrepreneurs, business promoters, and municipality representatives reveal three dimensions of place innovative synergies in city center attractiveness: 1) innovative variance in city center retail and tourism, 2) innovative interwovenness between the city center identity and its configuration, content, and communication, and 3) innovative interaction between retailers and tourism entrepreneurs in city center events. A key question is whether synergies in temporal events and everyday commerce are sufficiently combined, in order to engender encompassing renewal.
