  • New powder port holder geometry to avoid lump formation in APS
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: 17th international symposium on plasma chemistry (ISPC 17). ; , s. OP7. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A new geometry of the powder port ring holder used in atmospheric plasma spraying has recently been designed to avoid lump formation, and successfully tested for a set of process parameters associated with Ni-5Al powder used in production to form bond coat [1]. But with ZrO 2 powder used to made top coat, improvements were not enough satisfactory. Here, we investigate numerically the cause of the remaining defects, and further improve the ring geometry to prevent lump from forming in any part of the coating.

  • Information and communication technology : a person-centered approach to stroke care
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Disability, Virtual Reality and Associated Technologies. - Readings : University of Readings. - 9780704915459 ; , s. 329-335
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This report describes the possibilities of information and communication technology (ICT) in stroke care, addressing a person-centered care (PCC) approach. Attention is paid to user involvement, design, videogames, and communication between health care professionals mutually as well as with patients, and how to share performance data with an electronic health record. This is the first step towards a supportive ICT system that facilitates interoperability, making healthcare information and services available to citizen’s across organizational boundaries.

  • Comparing the Attributes of Students in Cooperative Education or Work-Integrated Learning Programs in Four Countries
  • 2012
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • New technologies, the internalization of markets, and higher numbers of university graduates have led to greater competition for employment and greater needs for higher-order employment skills, practical experience, and a strong sense of competence. An increasing number of students are turning to work-integrated programs of learning (WIL) –where they can gain the necessary skills to enhance their future employment and career prospects. The aim of this international project was to examine the relationship between work-integrated learning and the psychological variables believed to play a role for success in the transition to the labour market.Students from four countries (Canada, Sweden, England, and the USA) completed the same online questionnaire measuring self-concept, self-efficacy, hope (goal-setting, goal achievement), procrastination, motivation, study skills, and work ethic. Results indicated there were many attitudes and behaviours shared by WIL and non-WIL students in the four countries – however there were also significant differences that shed light on WIL outcomes and/or the type of students who select WIL, regardless of where they reside. WIL students appear to have a stronger math self-concept and problem-solving self-concept. Non WIL students appear to have more confidence to attain academic and career goals, but it decreases by the end of their studies. On the other hand, confidence increases substantially for WIL students. Gender effects and achievement differences between the two groups will also be discussed. In summary, Students in WIL programs –regardless of where they reside -appear more similar than different.

  • Preliminary results from a study of luminescent materials : For application in the beam imaging system at the ESS
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section B. - : Elsevier. - 0168-583X .- 1872-9584. ; 540, s. 227-233
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As part of the development of the beam imaging system at the European Spallation Source, luminescent screens have been fabricated by the flame spraying of scintillating materials onto stainless steel backings. A total of seven screens were produced, three of chromia alumina (Al2O3:Cr), two of YAG (Y3Al5O12:Ce) and two of a 50/50 mix of these. The properties of these screens under proton irradiation were evaluated using a2.55 MeV proton beam at currents of up to 10 μA. Irradiation times were up to 25 h per sample, during which luminescence-, spectrographic-, thermal- and current-data was sampled at a rate of 1 Hz. Preliminary results of these measurements are reported here; with a quantitative analysis presented for one of the chromia alumina screens and a qualitative comparison of all three material types. The luminescent yield for chromia alumina was determined to be around 2000 photons/MeV for a virgin screen, and was found to drop to 1.5% after 167 mC of proton irradiation. A recovery of the luminescence of chromia alumina to >60% was observed after beam current was reduced for an 8 h period. Observations indicate that the YAG and mixed composition screens retain higher luminescence than the chromia alumina even at temperatures of over 200 ◦C. It is indicated that the luminescence from YAG feeds the R-lines of chromia alumina in the mixed composition screens.

  • Gender and Programming : A Case Study
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Proceedings 2005. - Lund, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Our study highlights the effects of gender-related learning styles on a computer programming course at introductory level of engineering education. It was triggered by the observation of statistically relevant under-achievements among female students over the years. We try to identify concrete differences in motivation/learning styles between genders and prove that lack of previous relevant computer experience is not the only factor to blame. The paper analyzes the situation at a LTH course from the point of view of the conflicts outlined in the literature. Data from “before-starting” questionnaires and follow ups for subsequent evaluations expose significant gender differences. Analysis of the course materials and interviews with students reveals problems of constructive alignment and discouragements to the motivation of novice programmers. We investigated several pedagogical methods to adapt teaching and evaluation in order to increase all students’ competence and at the same time reduce the gap between genders. Our key recommendation is to make the separation between the teaching of algorithms and the teaching of the specific language syntax clearer. It is our belief that good teaching of engineering subjects will enhance learning for all students
