  • Particle physics at the European Spallation Source
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Physics reports. - : Elsevier. - 0370-1573 .- 1873-6270. ; 1023, s. 1-84
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Presently under construction in Lund, Sweden, the European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world’s brightest neutron source. As such, it has the potential for a particle physics program with a unique reach and which is complementary to that available at other facilities. This paper describes proposed particle physics activities for the ESS. These encompass the exploitation of both the neutrons and neutrinos produced at the ESS for high precision (sensitivity) measurements (searches).

  • A century of trends in adult human height
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: eLIFE. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Being taller is associated with enhanced longevity, and higher education and earnings. We reanalysed 1472 population-based studies, with measurement of height on more than 18.6 million participants to estimate mean height for people born between 1896 and 1996 in 200 countries. The largest gain in adult height over the past century has occurred in South Korean women and Iranian men, who became 20.2 cm (95% credible interval 17.5–22.7) and 16.5 cm (13.3– 19.7) taller, respectively. In contrast, there was little change in adult height in some sub-Saharan African countries and in South Asia over the century of analysis. The tallest people over these 100 years are men born in the Netherlands in the last quarter of 20th century, whose average heights surpassed 182.5 cm, and the shortest were women born in Guatemala in 1896 (140.3 cm; 135.8– 144.8). The height differential between the tallest and shortest populations was 19-20 cm a century ago, and has remained the same for women and increased for men a century later despite substantial changes in the ranking of countries.

  • Assessment of team based innovation in a Product Service System development process
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Research into Design. - Bangalore, India : Research Publishing Services. - 9789810877217 ; , s. 711-718
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovation is often measured based on how the product performs on the market. This makes it difficult to measure the performance of a team since the time to develop a product may take several years. In this paper we show the importance of creating a common ground and facilitation in a team, two aspects that is not easy measure, but should be assessed. We also discuss innovation on three interrelated organizational levels, the operational, which is the development team and in focus in this paper, the managerial and the strategic level. We found that companies need indicators to measure and/or assess performance on all three levels and thatmore research is needed to find the inter-links between the levels to prescribe measures and assessment points.

  • The ESSnuSB Design Study: Overview and Future Prospects
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Universe. - : MDPI. - 2218-1997. ; 9:8
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ESSnuSB is a design study for an experiment to measure the CP violation in the leptonic sector at the second neutrino oscillation maximum using a neutrino beam driven by the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator. The reduced impact of systematic errors on sensitivity at the second maximum allows for a very precise measurement of the CP violating parameter. This review describes the fundamental advantages of measurement at the second maximum, the necessary upgrades to the ESS linac in order to produce a neutrino beam, the near and far detector complexes, and the expected physics reach of the proposed ESSnuSB experiment, concluding with the near future developments aimed at the project realization.

  • The European Spallation Source neutrino super-beam conceptual design report
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: The European Physical Journal Special Topics. - : Springer Nature. - 1951-6355 .- 1951-6401. ; 231:21, s. 3779-3955
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A design study, named ESSνSB for European Spallation Source neutrino Super Beam, has been carried out during the years 2018–2022 of how the 5 MW proton linear accelerator of the European Spallation Source under construction in Lund, Sweden, can be used to produce the world’s most intense long-baseline neutrino beam. The high beam intensity will allow for measuring the neutrino oscillations near the second oscillation maximum at which the CP violation signal is close to three times higher than at the first maximum, where other experiments measure. This will enable CP violation discovery in the leptonic sector for a wider range of values of the CP violating phase δCPδCP and, in particular, a higher precision measurement of δCPδCP. The present Conceptual Design Report describes the results of the design study of the required upgrade of the ESS linac, of the accumulator ring used to compress the linac pulses from 2.86 ms to 1.2 μs, and of the target station, where the 5 MW proton beam is used to produce the intense neutrino beam. It also presents the design of the near detector, which is used to monitor the neutrino beam as well as to measure neutrino cross sections, and of the large underground far detector located 360 km from ESS, where the magnitude of the oscillation appearance of νe from νμ is measured. The physics performance of the ESSνSB research facility has been evaluated demonstrating that after 10 years of data-taking, leptonic CP violation can be detected with more than 5 standard deviation significance over 70% of the range of values that the CP violation phase angle δCPδCP can take and that δCPδCP can be measured with a standard error less than 8° irrespective of the measured value of δCPδCP. These results demonstrate the uniquely high physics performance of the proposed ESSνSBESSνSB research facility.

  • On the way to knowledge awareness in early design
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The future of product development. - Berlin : Encyclopedia of Global Archaeology/Springer Verlag. - 9783540698197 ; , s. 607-616
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This work is part of a study where a descriptive and a prescriptive approach have been used. This paper deals with the descriptive part and discusses views on decision support in product development to identify factors of relevance to con-sider when designing computer-based decision support for total offers. Providing services in form of physical artefacts offered as ‘functions per unit’ is at the heart of total offers. The intention is to provide customers with functions in time and place ‘as-needed’, based on a life-cycle commitment. This new scenario is found in manufacturing industry in addition to a traditional view on selling hardware and providing aftermarket activities. Total offers gain access to possibilities to ‘design in’ value added characteristics into the physical artefact, e.g., maintenance, moni-toring, training and abilities to upgrade and/or remanufacture. Computer tools is commonly used to supply design teams with information which is relevant, correct and in time to support resolutions, yet to support a GO/NO GO decision for total offers contemporary tools seems to be insufficient. Relevant factors to take into consideration are to support learning and provide the decision makers with insights in a number of plausible ‘what-if’ scenarios to im-prove the solution space.

  • Application of Statistical Methods on Occupational Health and Safety Management in the Mining Industry in Ezhou City, China
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Chinaʹs mining enterprises are confronted with insufficient safety investments, insufficientsafety benefits, recurrent occupational diseases and accidents, low level of safety riskmanagement, and many employee complaints, that seriously affect the economicdevelopment and the sustainable development of the country. Selection of scientific, accurateand comprehensive evaluation methods of all aspects of occupational health and safetymanagement will directly affect the evaluation results and then the direction of improvement;which is greatly needed. The aim of this thesis is twofold: one aim is to test and analyze a set of evaluationmethods that provide different perspectives on how occupational health and safetymanagement really works in the mining industry in Ezhou City, China. The other aim is toexplore a set of comprehensive evaluation methods that are suitable for occupational healthand safety management in the industries as a whole. This thesis is based on the theory of Multi Objective Decision Making and Grey System, and is broken down into three phases including: The first phase of my study: to describe the applications of the methods in five aspects ofoccupational health and safety in the mining industry in Ezhou City, China. This isshown in five articles and Chapter 1‐5. The second phase: to present some suggestions of improvements for the development ofthe occupational health and safety in the mining industry in Ezhou City, China. This ispresented in Chapter 6 in my study. The third phase: to explore a set of comprehensive evaluation methods that are suitablefor the occupational health and safety management in the industries. This is also shownin Chapter 6 in my study. In this thesis I mainly used six methods to evaluate occupational health and safetymanagement and the suitability of them for this type of research as well as in other types inindustrial activity. The six methods included in my research are: entropy weight(EW), failuremode and effect analysis (FMEA), improved analytic hierarchy process (AHP), dataenvelopment analysis (DEA), grey relational analysis (GRA) and 2‐tuple linguisticinformation (2‐TLI). The results of the analysis showed that: EW can be well used to evaluate the multi indicators of occupational health and safetymanagement, and can be extended to other areas such as safety management evaluation, the quality of the project, project forecasting and other industrial activities; FMEA has been proved practical, simple and less costly in the perspective of riskmanagement, occupational health and safety management, identification and control ofenvironmental factors in enterprises, and quality key point preventive control in allindustrial activities; Improved AHP is practical, simple and less costly for multi objective and multi criteriadecision making problems in all industrial activities; DEA is special for production efficiency and can well estimate the effective productionfrontier by calculating the history data of the financial department, and embodies itsunique advantages in dealing with multi indicator inputs and multi indicator outputs inall industrial activities; GRA does not require too much sample size and any typical distribution regulation; thecalculated amount of data is relatively small, and the results would always be in goodagreement with the qualitative analysis, so it is quite suitable for measuring the degree ofassociation between factors for indicator evaluation according to their similarity ordissimilarity. GRA can cope with the types of problem associated with comparisonbetween evaluation objects and the comparison object in all industrial activities; 2‐TLI is special for language information and can provide the basis for multi‐attributedecision analysis in spite of large amounts of calculation in all industrial activities. On the whole, each method has its advantages and disadvantages, and the key to judgingwhether a method is most suitable is if it can withstand the validation of practice. Anyhow, the main contribution of this research is that it has systematically tested and verified a set ofstatistical methods applied in a mining industry in Ezhou, China, and explored a set ofstatistical methods utilized in occupational health and safety management in industrialactivities. Additionally, another contribution of this research is that it has provided a directionfor improvement of sustainable development.
