  • Rasbiologiskt språkbruk i statens rättsprocess mot sameby
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Dagens Nyheter. - 1101-2447.

  • Pupil dilation reflects interference during memory retrieval
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate that pupillometry can be used to track memory interference independent of explicit responses. Pupil diameter was recordedthroughout encoding and retrieval of words from the same category over 4 trials, causing buildup of proactive interference (PI). In a contrastingcondition, the category was switched on the 4th trial, causing release from interference (RI). Pupil dilation systematically increased for bothconditions as interference built up and retrieval performance declined. Critically, in trial 4 the RI condition resulted in improved retrievalperformance, with significantly smaller pupil dilation than in the PI condition, where performance continued to decline. Principal component analysisrevealed an early dilation peak possibly related to control of interference, and a later component possibly linked to memory search.

  • Associative learning measured with ERP predicts deferred imitation using a strict observation only design in 14 to 15 month old children
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0036-5564 .- 1467-9450. ; 54:1, s. 33-40
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Deferred imitation is an established procedure for behavioural measurement of early declarative-like memories in infancy and previous work has indicated a link between this type of memory and brain potentials in infants. The present study compared infants’ memory performance in this paradigm with electrophysiological indices of associative learning. Thirty children (mean age: 14.5 months) participated, of which 15 (9 boys) had acceptable ERP recordings that could be included in the final analysis. Deferred imitation was measured with an observation-only procedure using three actions and a 30 min delay. ERP was recorded with a High Density Net (128 electrodes) during associative learning. Change scores based on Nc, a middle latency component associated with attentional processes, predicted deferred imitation performance. Thus, associative learning measured with ERP predicts deferred imitation using a strict observation only design in 14 to15 month old children.

  • Eye-movement replay supports episodic remembering
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. - : The Royal Society. - 1471-2954 .- 0962-8452. ; 289:1977
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • When we bring to mind something we have seen before, our eyes spontaneously unfold in a sequential pattern strikingly similar to that made during the original encounter, even in the absence of supporting visual input. Oculomotor movements of the eye may then serve the opposite purpose of acquiring new visual information; they may serve as self-generated cues, pointing to stored memories. Over 50 years ago Donald Hebb, the forefather of cognitive neuroscience, posited that such a sequential replay of eye movements supports our ability to mentally recreate visuospatial relations during episodic remembering. However, direct evidence for this influential claim is lacking. Here we isolate the sequential properties of spontaneous eye movements during encoding and retrieval in a pure recall memory task and capture their encoding-retrieval overlap. Critically, we show that the fidelity with which a series of consecutive eye movements from initial encoding is sequentially retained during subsequent retrieval predicts the quality of the recalled memory. Our findings provide direct evidence that such scanpaths are replayed to assemble and reconstruct spatio-temporal relations as we remember and further suggest that distinct scanpath properties differentially contribute depending on the nature of the goal-relevant memory.

  • Gaze position enhances memory accessibility during competitive memory retrieval
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While previous research has demonstrated that gaze position can increase the accessibility of previous memories (Johansson & Johansson, 2014), the present study tested whether such gazes can assist in selecting target memories at the expense of competing memories. An adapted retrieval practice paradigm was used, where participants engaged in repeated selective retrieval while looking at locations that either overlapped with the target memory’s encoding location or with a competitor’s encoding location. Encoding-retrieval overlap in gaze positions resulted in reduced activation of competitors, as evidenced by the elimination of retrieval induced forgetting for non-practiced items in the succeeding test phase. Corroborating evidence from pupil size measures indicate that overlapping gaze positions during retrieval practice reduce the need for inhibitory control mechanisms.

  • How encoding-retrieval overlap in gaze positions influences episodic memory accessibility in the “real world”
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An extensive body of research has shown that episodic remembering involves spontaneous eye movements that largely reproduce the gaze patterns that were present during encoding (e.g. Brandt & Stark, 1997; Johansson, et al., 2006; 2012; Johansson & Johansson, 2014; Richardson & Spivey, 2000). We have further demonstrated that gaze positions showing compatibility between encoding and retrieval increase the likelihood of successful remembering (Johansson & Johansson, 2014, 2020). However, to date, there is virtually no research on how gaze direction influences episodic remembering outside the laboratory. The aim of the present project was, therefore, to systematically investigate this effect in a “real-world” scenario. In a first experiment, participants (N=40, equipped with a mobile eye tracker) entered a room where they were faced with six framed stimuli at six different locations. Each stimulus comprised a letter in the center and an associated item to the left or right side of this letter. Participants were given 60 s to freely inspect and encode how each letter was associated with the items’ three features (shape, color and location). Participants then exited the room and engaged in a two-minute distracter task before they re-entered the room. They were now faced with the six frames again, but this time only the letter cue was present. They were then given 90 s to orally recall the associated items’ features in a free-recall procedure. For each participant, the same encoding-retrieval procedure was repeated over four rounds. During retrieval, the framed letters were either located in the same location as they were encoded in (congruent) or shuffled around to different locations (incongruent). Results overall replicated our previous lab-finding, with superior retrieval performance in the congruent condition. However, the effect was virtually absent for the participants who faced an incongruent condition in their first round of retrieval. In four follow-up experiments, we manipulated the number of congruent and incongruent frames within trials over the four rounds (0, 2, 4 or 6 congruent frames) and also introduced different degrees of interference between associated items. Interference was created by using two exemplars of each shape and each color instead of using unique shapes and unique colors across stimuli frames. In effect, this creates a situation where there are overlapping and competing features between items across frames. Collectively, the results from those follow-up experiments revealed that the congruency benefit is dependent on both contextual expectation and the need to handle interference from competing memories. Specifically, we show that the expectation of how relevant the spatial context is for the retrieval task can be both up- and down-regulated depending on previous rounds and that the congruency effect increases in accordance with the need to handle interference from competing memories. Those findings are further qualified by data from participants’ gaze patterns. In sum, we extend previous work by demonstrating that facilitatory effects of gaze direction on episodic remembering generalize to “real-world” scenarios, and we present novel findings that shed light on the underlying mechanisms.
