  • Eye movements play an active role when visuospatial information is recalled from memory

    • Abstract in Undetermined Whilst it has been established that spontaneous eye movements occur with visual imagery and that they are comparable with those from an original scene inspection (e.g., Brandt & Stark, 1997; Johansson, Holsanova, & Holmqvist, 2006), the exact purpose of these eye movements has been a hot topic of debate (cf., Ferreira et al., 2008; Richardson et al., 2009). Do they have an active and functional role in memory retrieval or are they merely an epiphenomenon? In a recent study we reported that when eye movements were prohibited for participants who orally described pictures from memory, their recollections became altered and impaired (Johansson, Holsanova, Dewhurst, & Holmqvist, (in press). Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance). The current study was designed as a follow-up, aiming to uncover exactly how imposing different eye movements on participants affects memory retrieval processes. Eye movements were recorded from participants who recalled properties and spatial arrangements of sets of objects under four different manipulations: (1) free viewing on a blank screen; (2) gazing at a fixation cross; (3) looking at an area which was matched with the original locations of the objects to be recalled; (4) looking at an area which did not match the original locations of the objects to be recalled. By restricting eye movements in different ways during recall, we demonstrate the sensitivity of retrieval performance to specific eye movement manipulations. Results provide evidence that eye movements do have an active and supportive role when visuospatial information is recalled by highlighting the circumstances under which a visual memory is hampered. Additionally, findings suggest that the influence of "eye movements to nothing" is primarily related to the processing and retrieval of spatial information.

  • Event segmentation in the audio description of films : A case study

    • To make the content of moving images and audio-visual media available to a visually impaired audience, a sighted interpreter can provide audio description (AD). AD is a verbal description of visual events, aiming to increase the accessibility of visual information and to provide a visually impaired audience with a richer and more detailed understanding and experience of, for instance, films. To achieve this goal, the audio describer critically needs to select what to describe, when to describe it, and how to describe it, as well as to express the information aurally. The prosperity of this communication is thus critically dependent upon basic cognitive processes of how the sighted audio describer perceives and segments the film’s unfolding chain of events and how the visually impaired end users conceive the structure, content, and segmentation of such events in relation to the produced AD. While the way in which we as human cognitive beings perceive, segment, and remember chain of events has been the matter of much research, there is virtually no research on this interplay in relation to AD. In the present case study, we scrutinize live AD of a film from two trained audio describers, and examine how events are structured, segmented and construed in their AD. Results demonstrate that the event segmentation structure experienced from the film is indeed a fundamental part of how AD is structured and construed. It was found that AD at event boundaries was highly sensitive to different spatiotemporal circumstances and this relationship depends on semantic resources for expressing AD.

  • How the blind audience receive and experience audio descriptions of visual events – a project presentation

    • We present a three-year multidisciplinary research project that started in 2019 and is funded by FORTE (Swedish Research Council for Health, Working Life and Welfare). The theoretical aim of the project is to gain a better understanding of the principles that underlie successful communication between the sighted and the blind via audio description (AD). The aim of a series of experiments is to identify similarities and differences in how the sighted and the blind understand, segment and experience visual, spatial as well as temporal properties of an event. The applied goal is to increase the quality of AD and to support the training of audio de-scribers and AD practices, and ultimately facilitate the understanding and accessibility of visual information for the visually impaired.

  • Lund Eye Tracking Studies in Research on Language and Cognition

    • The research group from Humanities laboratory at Lund University, Sweden, presents three strands of research on language and cognition where eye-tracking methodology has been used as a window on the mind. The paper includes: (1) eye tracking studies on picture viewing and picture description showing the dynamics of how speakers perceive, conceptualize and spontaneously describe complex visual scenes on higher levels of discourse, (2) studies using a combination of eye tracking and spoken scene descriptions to study mental imagery and to track the ability of “seeing something in the mind’s eye”, and (3) eye tracking studies conducted in order to study ’thinking for speaking’ and linguistic diversity by investigating language-specific cognitive effects. The paper ends with a visionary outlook for future applications of eye tracking methodology in the study of language and cognition.

Verktyget stödjer därmed interaktivitet, ger återkoppling till eleven, respekterar individernas lärstilar, erbjuder former av samarbete och stödjer metakognition.
