  • School bullying: Prevalence and variation in and between school systems in TIMSS 2015

    • Bullying is a substantial problem in schools worldwide and it can have severe consequences for individuals in both short and long-term. One aim of this study was to explore the bullying prevalence among 10-year-olds in school-systems participating in TIMSS 2015. Another aim was to examine the variability in bullying prevalence across schools in the participating countries to, finally, explore how school-related factors could reduce bullying prevalence. The main method was multilevel modeling. Overall, the results showed relatively high bullying prevalence even though the variability was large among the 50 countries. Some countries had substantial school differences and these were selected for further scrutiny. While socioeconomic status did not impact on bullying prevalence in a sub-sample of countries, factors like school climate and a sense of school belonging had an effect in most of them. Implications of the results were discussed.

  • Secondary School Biology Students’ Attitudes towards Modern Biotechnology Characterised using Structural Equation Modeling

    • In biotechnology education research (BTER), the multifaceted construct of attitude has seldom been problematised in depth despite that the majority of studies in BTER during the last two decades have focused on students’ attitudes towards modern biotechnology. Most studies on attitudes in science education use a single-factor model in characterising students’ attitudes, while some use a three-factor model. By means of structural equation modeling the current study tested and evaluated single, three-factor, and bifactor models of student attitudes towards modern biotechnology. To further shed light on the stability of this model measurement invariance testing was carried out for groups; school-type, gender, grade, parental education and educational programme. The results showed that a three-factor model and a bifactor model showed satisfying fit to the student attitude data. The bifactor model were relatively invariant for all groups except for gender, where boys had a more positive attitude. The affective and behavioural aspects of attitudes were highly correlated why the bifactor model with its general factor and specific cognitive factor may provide a more sound explanation of students’ attitudes towards biotechnology. The results indicate the importance of including affective and behavioural dimensions of attitude in biotechnology teaching. Further implications for practice are discussed.

  • English speaking practice with conversational AI: Lower secondary students' educational experiences over time

    • Conversational artificial intelligence enables opportunities for practicing speaking the target language while giving individualized feedback in a low-anxiety environment offered in spoken dialogue systems with conversational agents. In this paper, we present results from a longitudinal study conducted on Swedish lower-secondary students who used a spoken dialogue system as an integrated part of their ordinary English lessons. They interacted orally with embodied conversational agents to solve given tasks in everyday-life scenarios and self-reported their experiences in questionnaires and systematic logbook reflections. Analytical methods were mainly non-parametric tests. Results revealed that the students sustained practicing, socially and emotionally engaged with a slightly positive trend in their educational experience. These insights can inspire teachers and stakeholders in the integration of conversational artificial intelligence in language education and designers in the development of such systems for this age group.

  • Estimating effects of teacher characteristics on student achievement in reading and mathematics: evidence from Swedish census data

    • There is consensus that, for student achievement, teachers matter. However, providing reliable research evidence for the effects of observable teacher characteristics, such as qualification measures, has been difficult. The current study uses panel data based on register information from teachers and students to estimate effects of teacher characteristics on student achievement in mathematics and Swedish in Grade 6. Applying fixed-effects regression to a large sample of schools, we observed significant positive effects of several teacher characteristics. Having a teaching license was found to be one of the most important qualification measures, but teachers’ level of experience was also important for student achievement. The effects of teacher qualifications were generally stronger for mathematics than for Swedish.
