    • Opportunity has been traversing the Meridiani plains since 25 January 2004 (sol 1), acquiring numerous observations of the atmosphere, soils, and rocks. This paper provides an overview of key discoveries between sols 511 and 2300, complementing earlier papers covering results from the initial phases of the mission. Key new results include (1) atmospheric argon measurements that demonstrate the importance of atmospheric transport to and from the winter carbon dioxide polar ice caps; (2) observations showing that aeolian ripples covering the plains were generated by easterly winds during an epoch with enhanced Hadley cell circulation; (3) the discovery and characterization of cobbles and boulders that include iron and stony-iron meteorites and Martian impact ejecta; (4) measurements of wall rock strata within Erebus and Victoria craters that provide compelling evidence of formation by aeolian sand deposition, with local reworking within ephemeral lakes; (5) determination that the stratigraphy exposed in the walls of Victoria and Endurance craters show an enrichment of chlorine and depletion of magnesium and sulfur with increasing depth. This result implies that regional-scale aqueous alteration took place before formation of these craters. Most recently, Opportunity has been traversing toward the ancient Endeavour crater. Orbital data show that clay minerals are exposed on its rim. Hydrated sulfate minerals are exposed in plains rocks adjacent to the rim, unlike the surfaces of plains outcrops observed thus far by Opportunity. With continued mechanical health, Opportunity will reach terrains on and around Endeavour's rim that will be markedly different from anything examined to date.     • Ultrasonic Consolidation (UC) is an additive manufacturing technology which is based on the sequential solid-state ultrasonic welding of metal foils. UC presents a rapid and adaptive alternative process, to other metal-matrix embedding technologies, for 'smart' metal composite material production. A challenge that exists however relates to optimising, for bond density and plastic flow, the interlaminar textures themselves that serve as the contact surfaces between the foils.UC employs a sonotrode connected to a transducer to exude ultrasonic energy into the metal foil being sequentially deposited. This sonotrode to metal contact imparts a noteworthy topology to the processed metals surface that in turn becomes the crucial substrate topology of the subsequent layers deposition. This work investigated UC processed Al 3003 samples to ascertain the effect of this imparted topology on subsequent layer deposition. Surface and interlaminar topology profiles were characterised using interferometry, electron and light microscopy. The physical effect of the topology profiles was quantified via the use of peel testing.The imparted topology profile was found to be of fundamental significance to the mechanical performance and bond density achieved within the bulk laminate during UC. The UC process parameters and sonotrode topology performed a key role in modifying this topology profile. The concept of using a specifically textured sonotrode to attain desired future smart material performance via UC is proposed by the authors. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.

    • Background Despite anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) re-ruptures being common, research on patient experiences after knee trauma has primarily focused on the time after primary ACL reconstruction. Integrating qualitative research and patient experiences can facilitate researchers and clinicians in understanding the burden of an ACL re-rupture. The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of an ACL re-rupture journey in young active females aiming to return to knee-strenuous sports after primary ACL reconstruction. Method Fifteen young (19[range 16-23] years old) active females who suffered an ACL re-rupture were interviewed with semi-structured interviews. Qualitative content analysis using deductive approach based on Wiese-Bjornstal's 'integrated model of response to sport injury' was used. Results The results are presented in two timelines 1) from first ACL injury to ACL re-rupture, and 2) from ACL re-rupture to present day, and further stratified according to the domains of the 'integrated model of psychological response to injury'. Results in the first timeline are summarised into seven categories: Finding hope for the journey; Accepting my ACL injury; I succeeded; What matters now? Who am I?; Where will this end? What is going to happen? In the second timeline, eight categories were identified: Fighting spirit; A helping hand; Working hard; I am a new me; I am destroyed; Loneliness; Painful changes; and, I could have made it to the pro ' s. Conclusion Young active females who suffered an ACL re-rupture did not express any positive experience following their first ACL injury, however, in contrast, expressed positive experiences and personal growth after going through the ACL re-rupture journey, characterized by a lot of struggling, and ultimately led to the experience of becoming a new, stronger person.

  • Self presentation concerns and risky rehabilitation behaviors among adolescent athletes

    • Self-presentational concerns have been shown to predict a range of health damaging behaviors in a variety of life domains (Martin Ginis & Leary, 2004). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-presentational concerns and injured athlete health-risk behaviors (e.g., overdoing rehabilitation). Data with currently injured US adolescent athletes (n=90) competing in a range of high school sports was obtained. Self-presentational concerns about appearing athletically untalented (AAU), physical appearance (PA), fatigued/lacking in energy (FLE), and mental composure inadequacies (MCI) were assessed using the 21-item Self-Presentation in Sport Questionnaire (SPSQ; McGowan, Prapavessis, & Wesch, 2008). Injury risk behaviors were measured using the Rehabilitation Behaviors and Beliefs Questionnaire (RBBQ) and a modified version of the Injury Psychological Readiness to Return to Sport Scale (I-PRRS; Glazer, 2009).As the RBBQ was a novel instrument, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted. EFA results indicated two distinct interpretable factors with eigenvalues exceeding 1.0?rehabilitation behaviors (RBBQ-RBH, ?=.80) and rehabilitation beliefs (RBBQ-RBL, ?=.78). Subsequent correlational analysis revealed significant small to moderate correlations between AAU, MCI and the RBH factor (r = .29-.30, p < .01). Finally, linear stepwise regression analyses indicated that AAU predicted 9.2% (8.2% adjusted) of the variance in risky rehabilitation behaviors (RBBQ-RBH; ? = .304, p <.01). These findings suggest that athletes with greater self-presentational concerns may be more likely to engage in risky rehabilitation behaviors. Minimizing concerns about appearing athletically untalented may be important for preventing risk behaviors that increase the subsequent likelihood of reinjury and diminished post-injury performance.

  • Quality of locally designed surveys in a quality improvement collaborative : review of survey validity and identification of common errors

    • Objective: Surveys are a commonly used tool in quality improvement (QI) projects, but little is known about the standards to which they are designed and applied. We aimed to investigate the quality of surveys used within a QI collaborative, and to characterise the common errors made in survey design.Methods: Five reviewers (two research methodology and QI, three clinical and QI experts) independently assessed 20 surveys, comprising 250 survey items, that were developed in a North American cystic fibrosis lung transplant transition collaborative. Content Validity Index (CVI) scores were calculated for each survey. Reviewer consensus discussions decided an overall quality assessment for each survey and survey item (analysed using descriptive statistics) and explored the rationale for scoring (using qualitative thematic analysis).Results: 3/20 surveys scored as high quality (CVI >80%). 19% (n=47) of survey items were recommended by the reviewers, with 35% (n=87) requiring improvements, and 46% (n=116) not recommended. Quality assessment criteria were agreed upon. Types of common errors identified included the ethics and appropriateness of questions and survey format; usefulness of survey items to inform learning or lead to action, and methodological issues with survey questions, survey response options; and overall survey design.Conclusion: Survey development is a task that requires careful consideration, time and expertise. QI teams should consider whether a survey is the most appropriate form for capturing information during the improvement process. There is a need to educate and support QI teams to adhere to good practice and avoid common errors, thereby increasing the value of surveys for evaluation and QI. The methodology, quality assessment criteria and common errors described in this paper can provide a useful resource for this purpose. © Author(s) (or their employer(s)) 2024.   • Field repair and replacement part fabrication of military components using ultrasonic consolidation cold metal deposition

    • Timely repair and replacement of military components without degrading material properties offers tremendous opportunities for cost and schedule savings on a number of military platforms. Effective field-based additive manufacturing repair approaches have proven difficult to develop, as conventional additive metal deposition technologies typically include a molten phase transformation and controlled inert deposition environments. The molten stage of laser and electron beam based additive processes unfortunately results in large dimensional and microstructural changes to the component being repaired or re-fabricated. As a result, high residual stresses and unpredictable ductility profiles in the repair area, or the re-fabricated part, make the final product unsafe for redeployment. Specifically, the heat affected zone associated with traditional deposition-based repair methods can produce a low strength, non-homogenous region at the joint; these changes in the materials properties of the repaired parts are detrimental to the fatigue life, and are a major concern where cyclic loading is experienced. The use of solid state high power Ultrasonic Consolidation (UC) technologies avoids the liquid-solid transition complexity and creates a predictable “cold” bond. This method then allows for strong, homogenous structures to be manufactured and repaired in the field and opens the door for the use of high strength repair material that may reduce the frequency of future failure itself. In addition, UC further offers the opportunity to provide enhanced functionality and ruggedness to a component either during repair or from original manufacture by allowing the embedding of passive and functional elements into the new fabricated component or feature.
