    • We propose to install a storage ring at an ISOL-type radioactive beam facility for the first time. Specifically, we intend to setup the heavy-ion, low-energy ring TSR at the HIE-ISOLDE facility in CERN, Geneva. Such a facility will provide a capability for experiments with stored secondary beams that is unique in the world. The envisaged physics programme is rich and varied, spanning from investigations of nuclear ground-state properties and reaction studies of astrophysical relevance, to investigations with highly-charged ions and pure isomeric beams. The TSR might also be employed for removal of isobaric contaminants from stored ion beams and for systematic studies within the neutrino beam programme. In addition to experiments performed using beams recirculating within the ring, cooled beams can also be extracted and exploited by external spectrometers for high-precision measurements. The existing TSR, which is presently in operation at the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, is well-suited and can be employed for this purpose. The physics cases as well as technical details of the existing ring facility and of the beam and infrastructure requirements at HIE-ISOLDE are discussed in the present technical design report.

    • The time-reversed reaction 15O(2p,γ)17Ne has been studied by the Coulomb dissociation technique. Secondary 17Ne ion beams at 500 AMeV have been produced by fragmentation reactions of 20Ne in a beryllium production target and dissociated on a secondary Pb target. The incoming beam and the reaction products have been identified with the kinematically complete LAND-R3B experimental setup at GSI. The excitation energy prior to decay has been reconstructed by using the invariant-mass method. The preliminary differential and integral Coulomb Dissociation cross sections (σCoul) have been calculated, which provide a photoabsorption (σphoto) and a radiative capture cross section (σcap). Additionally, important information about the nuclear structure of the 17Ne nucleus will be obtained. The analysis is in progress.

  • Comparison of electromagnetic and nuclear dissociation of Ne-17

    • The Borromean drip-line nucleus Ne-17 has been suggested to possess a two-proton halo structure in its ground state. In the astrophysical rp-process, where the two-proton capture reaction O-15(2p,gamma) Ne-17 plays an important role, the calculated reaction rate differs by several orders of magnitude between different theoretical approaches. To add to the understanding of the Ne-17 structure we have studied nuclear and electromagnetic dissociation. A 500 MeV/u Ne-17 beam was directed toward lead, carbon, and polyethylene targets. Oxygen isotopes in the final state were measured in coincidence with one or two protons. Different reaction branches in the dissociation of Ne-17 were disentangled. The relative populations of s and d states in F-16 were determined for light and heavy targets. The differential cross section for electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) shows a continuous internal energy spectrum in the three-body system O-15 + 2p. The Ne-17 EMD data were compared to current theoretical models. None of them, however, yields satisfactory agreement with the experimental data presented here. These new data may facilitate future development of adequate models for description of the fragmentation process.

  • Respiratory mechanics in patients ventilated for critical lung disease

    • Respiratory mechanics, using flow interruption, was previously studied during the complete breath in healthy ventilated man, numerical techniques relieving constraints regarding flow pattern. The classical linear model of non-Newtonian behaviour was found to be valid. The present study was extended to subjects with critical lung disease. Subjects with acute lung injury (ALI; n = 2), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS; n = 4), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; n = 3) were studied with and without positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP). Functional residual capacity (FRC) was measured with sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) wash-out. The static pressure-volume (P-V) curve was linear at zero end-expiratory pressure (ZEEP), but nonlinear at PEEP. Its hysteresis was nonsignificant. In ALI/ARDS, PEEP increased lung volume by distension and recruitment, but only by distension in COPD. In ALI/ARDS, resistance was increased, at ZEEP. In COPD, resistance became extremely high during expiration at ZEEP. In ALI/ARDS at ZEEP, non-Newtonian behaviour, representing tissue stress relaxation and pendel-luft, complied with the classical linear model. At PEEP, the non-Newtonian compliance became volume-dependent to an extent correlated to the nonlinearity of the static P-V curve. In COPD, non-Newtonian behaviour was adequately explained only with a model with different inspiratory and expiratory behaviour. The classical model of the respiratory system is valid in ALI/ARDS at ZEEP. More advanced models are needed at PEEP and in COPD.

  • Mechanics of respiratory system in healthy anesthetized humans with emphasis on viscoelastic properties

    • The classic model of the respiratory system (RS) is comprised of a Newtonian resistor in series with a capacitor and a viscoelastic unit including a resistor and a capacitor. The flow interruption technique has often been used to study the viscoelastic behavior under constant inspiratory flow rate. To study the viscoelastic behavior of the RS during complete respiratory cycles and to quantify viscoelastic resistance (Rve) and compliance (Cve) under unrestrained conditions, we developed an iterative technique based on a differential equation. We, as others, assumed Rve and Cve to be constant, which concords with volume and flow dependency of model behavior. During inspiration Newtonian resistance (R) was independent of flow and volume. During expiration R increased. Static elastic recoil showed no significant hysteresis. The viscoelastic behavior of the RS was in accordance with the model. The magnitude of Rve was 3.7 +/- 0.7 cmH2O.l-1 x s, i.e., two times R. Cve was 0.23 +/- 0.051 l/cmH2O, i.e., four times static compliance. The viscoelastic time constant, i.e., Cve.Rve, was 0.82 +/- 0.11s. The work dissipated against the viscoelastic system was 0.62 +/- 0.13 cmH2O x 1 for a breath of 0.56 liter, corresponding to 32% of the total energy loss within the RS. Viscoelastic recoil contributed as a driving force during the initial part of expiration.

    • We have observed beta(+)-delayed alpha and p alpha emission from the proton-rich nucleus Mg-21 produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The assignments were cross-checked with a time distribution analysis. This is the third identified case of beta p alpha emission. We discuss the systematic of beta-delayed particle emission decays, show that our observed decays fit naturally into the existing pattern, and argue that the patterns are to a large extent caused by odd-even effects.   • Measurement of pulmonary density by means of X-ray computerized tomography. Relation to pulmonary mechanics in normal subjects

    • We examined the relationship between pulmonary density, measured with computerized tomography, and pulmonary mechanics (static pulmonary volume; pulmonary resistance) in 39 normal subjects (20 nonsmokers and 19 smokers). Pulmonary density decreased with increasing static elastic recoil pressure, and smokers consistently showed higher pulmonary density than nonsmokers. Pulmonary density, measured at full inspiration, correlated inversely with total lung capacity. Pulmonary density showed a ventrodorsal gradient, which was greater at low elastic recoil pressure than at high recoil pressure. The study shows that pulmonary density is related to the mechanical properties of the lung in normal subjects. Increased pulmonary density appears to be a sensitive indicator of pulmonary damage induced by smoking. Further studies of the relationship between pulmonary density and pulmonary mechanics in disease seem warranted.
