  • Overview of the JET preparation for deuterium-tritium operation with the ITER like-wall
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Fusion. - : IOP Publishing. - 1741-4326 .- 0029-5515. ; 59:11
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • For the past several years, the JET scientific programme (Pamela et al 2007 Fusion Eng. Des. 82 590) has been engaged in a multi-campaign effort, including experiments in D, H and T, leading up to 2020 and the first experiments with 50%/50% D-T mixtures since 1997 and the first ever D-T plasmas with the ITER mix of plasma-facing component materials. For this purpose, a concerted physics and technology programme was launched with a view to prepare the D-T campaign (DTE2). This paper addresses the key elements developed by the JET programme directly contributing to the D-T preparation. This intense preparation includes the review of the physics basis for the D-T operational scenarios, including the fusion power predictions through first principle and integrated modelling, and the impact of isotopes in the operation and physics of D-T plasmas (thermal and particle transport, high confinement mode (H-mode) access, Be and W erosion, fuel recovery, etc). This effort also requires improving several aspects of plasma operation for DTE2, such as real time control schemes, heat load control, disruption avoidance and a mitigation system (including the installation of a new shattered pellet injector), novel ion cyclotron resonance heating schemes (such as the three-ions scheme), new diagnostics (neutron camera and spectrometer, active Alfven eigenmode antennas, neutral gauges, radiation hard imaging systems...) and the calibration of the JET neutron diagnostics at 14 MeV for accurate fusion power measurement. The active preparation of JET for the 2020 D-T campaign provides an incomparable source of information and a basis for the future D-T operation of ITER, and it is also foreseen that a large number of key physics issues will be addressed in support of burning plasmas.

  • A mathematical model of a blast furnace injection tuyere
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Steel Research International. - : Wiley. - 1611-3683 .- 1869-344X. ; 76:11, s. 755-763
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One way to further utilise produced gases in an integrated metallurgical plant is to replace oil with gas as a reducing agent in a modern blast furnace. Accordingly, it is of great interest to study the injection of reducing gas into the blast furnace. Therefore, a three-dimensional mathematical model has been developed which simulates the injection of the gas by lances into the tuyere. The model includes the coupled solution of the flow field and the chemical reaction of the gases in the tuyere. Two different types of fuel gas, coke oven gas (COG) and basic oxygen furnace gas (BOF) have been modelled using one injection lance. The modelling technique is presented and discussed as well as the implied results. Furthermore, process parameters such as different gas compositions etc. are investigated using the developed model. Not surprisingly, the main results show that the COG is combusted more completely than BOF gas, which leads to higher flame temperature of the blast putting demand forward to lower the heat load of the tuyere. However, the modelling of the raceway is as far not included in the model, hence the influence of the outlet boundary condition at the tuyere is not reflected in the presented results.

  • Switchable Plasmonic Metasurfaces with High Chromaticity Containing only Abundant Metals
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nano Letters. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1530-6984 .- 1530-6992. ; 17:11, s. 7033-7039
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Plasmonic color generation offers several advantages but is also limited by the cost and availability of noble metals like gold. In this work, we present color-tunable metasurfaces with high chromaticity and reflectivity consisting of an aluminum mirror, a dielectric spacer, and a plasmonic nanohole array in copper. Copper is shown to be an excellent alternative to gold when properly protected from oxidation and makes it possible to generate a wide RGB gamut covering 27% of the standard RGB. By patterning the metasurfaces into microscale pixel triplets, color photos can be well reproduced with high resolution over wafer-sized areas. Further, we demonstrate active modulation of the reflected intensity using an electrochromic conductive polymer deposited on top of the nanostructures by screen printing. This technology opens up for ultrathin and flexible reflective displays in full color, that is, plasmonic electronic paper, compatible with large-scale sustainable production.

  • Uncertainty in the numerical prediction of the tangential velocity in axial turbines at part load operations: A parametric study
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Energy Reports. - : Elsevier. - 2352-4847. ; 10, s. 2597-2611
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Numerical simulations of axial hydraulic turbines away from the best efficiency point are challenging. Previous studies especially show difficulties predicting the tangential velocity at Part Load (PL) operating conditions, where the swirl is high, in comparison to experiments. This is a reoccurring problem, and it is essential to understand, as the high tangential velocity is a fundamental characteristic of the flow in hydraulic turbines and is directly related to the swirling flow stability and the turbine's power output. The objective of this study is to numerically investigate and understand the origin of the tangential velocity deviation from experimental results by performing simulations with the finite volume method of an axial turbine operated at PL. A parametric study is performed to address the abovementioned. Specifically, the effects of the blade clearance, blade angle, flow rate, and different turbulence models are studied on this issue. Results are analyzed by comparing the predicted axial and tangential velocity profiles and torque to experimentally obtained values. Primarily the runner inter-blades flow is studied as there is a knowledge gap. In addition, the physical phenomena responsible for head losses are studied in detail. Results show that the model can predict the flow relatively well at optimal flow conditions with low swirl but has problems at part load; the tangential velocity between the runner blades is underestimated by ∼20%. The undervalued head losses are the root cause. They result in an overestimated torque and an underestimated tangential velocity as the runner extracts too much energy from the fluid. A small modeling error of 0.5° in the blade angle and a change of 3% in the flow rate significantly affect the tangential velocity and torque prediction. The studied parameters must be considered carefully when building a numerical model.

  • Development of fluorescence-based LIDAR technology for biological sensing
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: 2005 MRS Spring Meeting - Symposium FF. - : Materials Research Society. ; , s. 51-62
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Results of our on-going development of biological warfare agents (BWA) detection systems based on spectral detection of ultraviolet (UV) laser induced fluorescence (LIF) are presented. A compact optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with intracavity sum-frequency mixing (SFM) to generate 293 nm UV laser irradiation was developed. The OPO/SFM device was pumped by a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm), including subsequent second-harmonic generation (SHG) in an external periodically poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP) crystal. The laser generated 1.8 ns pulses at 100 Hz with an average power of 44 mW at 532 nm. The whole system could be used to deliver approximately 30 μJ laser irradiation per pulse (100 Hz) at 293 nm. The spectral detection part of the system consists of a grating and a photomultiplier tube (PMT) array with 32 channels, which can measure fluorescence spectra in the wavelength band from 250 nm to 800 nm. The detector system was designed along with a trigger laser to enable measurement of fluorescence spectra from an individual aerosol particle of simulants for BWA upon excitation with a single nanosecond laser pulse. We demonstrate the successful detection and spectral characterization of simulants for BWA, i.e., Bacillus atrophaeus (BG), Bacillus thuringiensis (BT), and Ovalbumin (OA).

  • Highly integrated direct conversion receiver for GSM/GPRS/EDGE with on-chip 84-dB dynamic range continuous-time ΣΔ ADC
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits. - 0018-9200. ; 40:2, s. 403-411
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes a highly digitized direct conversion receiver of a single-chip quadruple-band RF transceiver that meets GSM/GPRS and EDGE requirements. The chip uses an advanced 0.25-mum BiCMOS technology. The I and Q on-chip fifth-order single-bit continuous-time sigma-delta (SigmaDelta) ADC has 84-dB dynamic range over a total bandwidth of +/-135 kHz for an active area of 0.4 mm(2). Hence, most of the channel filtering is realized in a CMOS IC where digital processing-is achieved at a lower cost. The systematic analysis of dc offset at each stage of the design enables to perform the dc offset cancellation loop in the digital domain as well. The receiver operates at 2.7 V with a current consumption of 75 mA. A first-order substrate coupling analysis enables to optimize the floor plan strategy. As a result, the receiver has an area of 1.8 mm(2).

  • The Innovative Exploration Drilling and Data Acquisition Research School
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: NSG2021 27th European Meeting of Environmental and Engineering Geophysics. - : European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Innovative Exploration Drilling and Data Acquisition Research School (I-EDDA-RS) is aimed at educating emerging scientists and engineers in on-site drilling and geoscientific investigation technology for mining. I-EDDA-RS consists if a consortium of scientists and specialists from six universities and research institutes in Germany and Sweden. A central component of the research school is that the courses have hands-on components at drill sites, boreholes and repositories. In addition, a course on entrepreneurial skills required in the exploration industry is also included in I-EDDA-RS. The arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in altered plans. Instead of offering ten courses with strong field work, practical, and entrepreneurial components during 2020, four courses via distant learning were offered. While this was disappointing in many aspects, two of the courses attracted a larger group of students from a wider part of the world than original envisioned. Outreach via on-line and open webinars is also a route to explore, as a complement to meetings and conferences in real life. The I-EDDA-RS courses in 2021 welcomes students at MSc & PhD level, as well as experienced professionals for lifelong learning (c.f. https://www.iedda.eu/rs). The form and type of teaching is to be determined.
