  • Total daily energy expenditure has declined over the past three decades due to declining basal expenditure, not reduced activity expenditure
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature Metabolism. - : NATURE PORTFOLIO. - 2522-5812. ; 5:4, s. 579-588
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Obesity is caused by a prolonged positive energy balance(1,2). Whether reduced energy expenditure stemming from reduced activity levels contributes is debated(3,4). Here we show that in both sexes, total energy expenditure (TEE) adjusted for body composition and age declined since the late 1980s, while adjusted activity energy expenditure increased over time. We use the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labelled Water database on energy expenditure of adults in the United States and Europe (n = 4,799) to explore patterns in total (TEE: n = 4,799), basal (BEE: n = 1,432) and physical activity energy expenditure (n = 1,432) over time. In males, adjusted BEE decreased significantly, but in females this did not reach significance. A larger dataset of basal metabolic rate (equivalent to BEE) measurements of 9,912 adults across 163 studies spanning 100 years replicates the decline in BEE in both sexes. We conclude that increasing obesity in the United States/Europe has probably not been fuelled by reduced physical activity leading to lowered TEE. We identify here a decline in adjusted BEE as a previously unrecognized factor.

  • Global emissions of terpenoid VOCs from terrestrial vegetation in the last millennium
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 2169-897X .- 2169-8996. ; 119:11, s. 6867-6885
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated the millennial variability (1000 A.D.-2000 A.D.) of global biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emissions by using two independent numerical models: The Model of Emissions of Gases and Aerosols from Nature (MEGAN), for isoprene, monoterpene, and sesquiterpene, and Lund-Potsdam-Jena-General Ecosystem Simulator (LPJ-GUESS), for isoprene and monoterpenes. We found the millennial trends of global isoprene emissions to be mostly affected by land cover and atmospheric carbon dioxide changes, whereas monoterpene and sesquiterpene emission trends were dominated by temperature change. Isoprene emissions declined substantially in regions with large and rapid land cover change. In addition, isoprene emission sensitivity to drought proved to have significant short-term global effects. By the end of the past millennium MEGAN isoprene emissions were 634 TgC yr-1 (13% and 19% less than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively), and LPJ-GUESS emissions were 323 TgC yr-1(15% and 20% less than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively). Monoterpene emissions were 89 TgC yr-1(10% and 6% higher than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively) in MEGAN, and 24 TgC yr-1 (2% higher and 5% less than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively) in LPJ-GUESS. MEGAN sesquiterpene emissions were 36 TgC yr-1(10% and 4% higher than during 1750-1850 and 1000-1200, respectively). Although both models capture similar emission trends, the magnitude of the emissions are different. This highlights the importance of building better constraints on VOC emissions from terrestrial vegetation.

  • Nonvolatile low-voltage memory transistor based on SiO2 tunneling and HfO2 blocking layers with charge storage in Au nanocrystals
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Applied Physics Letters. - : American Institute of Physics (AIP). - 0003-6951 .- 1077-3118. ; 98:21
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We demonstrate a low voltage nonvolatile memory field effect transistor comprising thermal SiO2 tunneling and HfO2 blocking layers as the gate dielectric stack and Au nanocrystals as charge storage nodes. The structure exhibits a memory window of similar to 2 V at an applied sweeping voltage of +/- 3 V which increases to 12.6 at +/- 12 V. Retention tests show an extrapolated loss of 16% after ten years in the hysteresis width of the threshold voltage. Dynamic program/erase operation reveal an approximately pulse width independent memory for pulse durations of 1 mu s to 10 ms; longer pulses increase the memory window while for pulses shorter than 1 mu s, the memory windows vanishes. The effective oxide thickness is below 10 nm with very low gate and drain leakage currents. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi: 10.1063/1.3595484]
