  • Multichannel filter for heartbeat detection in noisy ECG recordings
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: WORLD CONGRESS ON MEDICAL PHYSICS AND BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING 2006, VOL 14, PTS 1-6.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In ECG signals recorded with smart clothes disturbances as intermittent loss of signal from electrodes, movement artefacts, and electromyographic interference are common. In this study a multichannel method for spatio-temporal filtering is evaluated using ECG signals from a database and with three recordings made with a T-shirt with integrated textile electrodes. The sensitivity and precision of the signals from the database were 99.6% and 98.5%, respectively, if 12 channels were used and the signal-to-noise ratio was -10 dB. The filter gave a sensitivity of 99.6% and a precision of 99.5% in the recordings from the textile electrodes. In conclusion, the results obtained indicated that multichannel spatio-temporal filtration could be a suitable method for heartbeat detection in ECG measurements with textile electrodes.

  • Aluminum electroplating on steel from a fused bromide electrolyte
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Surface and Coatings Technology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0257-8972. ; 258, s. 652-663
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A quaternary bromide bath (LiBr-KBr-CsBr-AlBr3) was used to electro-coat aluminum on steel substrates. The electrolyte was prepared by the addition of AlBr3 into the eutectic LiBr-KBr-CsBr melt. A smooth, thick, adherent and shiny aluminum coating could be obtained with 80 wt.% AlBr3 in the ternary melt. The SEM photographs of the coated surfaces suggest the formation of thick and dense coatings with good aluminum coverage. Both salt immersion and open circuit potential measurement suggested that the coatings did display a good corrosion-resistance behavior. Annealing of the coated surfaces, prior to corrosion tests, suggested the robustness of the metallic aluminum coating in preventing the corrosion of the steel surfaces. Studies also indicated that the quaternary bromide plating bath can potentially provide a better aluminum coating on both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including complex surfaces/geometries.

  • An iterative approach to determine the refractive index of 3D printed 60GHz PLA lenses
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 14th Loughborough Antennas and Propagation Conference (LAPC 2018). - Piscataway, N.J. : IEEE. - 9781785619694
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper describes an iterative approach to determine quasi-optical properties of standard 3D printer filament material to, in an inexpensive and fast way, construct focusing lenses for millimetre wave systems. Results from three lenses with different focal lengths are shown and discussed. The real part of the permittivity at 60GHz for polylactic acid (PLA) is in this paper determined to be εr=2.74. © 2018 Institution of Engineering and Technology. All rights reserved.

  • Electrochemical surface oxide characteristics of metal nanoparticles (Mn, Cu and Al) and the relation to toxicity
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Electrochimica Acta. - : Elsevier BV. - 0013-4686 .- 1873-3859. ; 212, s. 360-371
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most metal nanoparticles (NPs), except noble metal NPs, rapidly form a thin surface oxide in ambient conditions. The protective properties of these oxides improve or worsen depending on the environment, e.g., the human lung. Several properties, including the chemical/electrochemical stability and defect density, determine the capacity of these surface oxides to hinder the bulk metal from further oxidation (corrosion). The aim of this study was to investigate whether electrochemical surface oxide characterization of non-functionalized base metal NPs of different characteristics (Al, Mn and Cu) can assist in understanding their bioaccessibility (metal release) in cell media (DMEM+) and their cytotoxic properties following exposure in lung epithelial (A549) cells. The composition and valence states of surface oxides of metal NPs and their electrochemical activity were investigated using an electrochemical technique based on a graphite paste electrode to perform cyclic voltammetry in buffer solutions and open circuit potential measurements in DMEM+. The electrochemical surface oxide characterization was complemented and verified by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The open circuit potential trends in DMEM+ correlated well with metal release results in the same solution, and provided information on the kinetics of oxide dissolution in the case of Cu NPs. Extensive particle agglomeration in cell medium (DMEM+) was observed by means of photon-cross correlation spectroscopy for all metal NPs, with sedimentation taking place very quickly. As a consequence, measurements of the real dose of added non-functionalized metal NPs to cell cultures for cytotoxicity testing from a sonicated stock solution were shown necessary. The cytotoxic response was found to be strongly correlated to changes in physico-chemical and electrochemical properties of the surface oxides of the metal NPs, the most potent being Cu NPs, followed by Mn NPs. No cytotoxicity was observed for Al NPs. The electrochemical surface oxide characterization corresponded well with other tools commonly used for nanotoxicological characterization and provided additional information.

  • Exposure of FeCrAl Overlay Welds on Superheater Tubes : Influence of Local Environment on Degradation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Failure Analysis and Prevention. - : Springer. - 1547-7029 .- 1864-1245. ; 22:1, s. 400-408
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two experimental FeCrAl alloy overlay welds on tube shields were exposed in the superheater of a full-size waste fired boiler for 6 months. The tube shields were in different tube lines and positions within the superheater chamber to investigate possible heterogeneities in the exposure environment. The visual inspection of the exposed tube shields and the corrosion-erosion rates calculated from the analysis of cross-sections showed that the mid-length roof location experienced the most aggressive environment. The compositional differences between the two experimental alloys were not found to be determinant in their performance under these specific exposure conditions. It was concluded that erosion had a decisive influence on the results. The identification of local differences within the superheater chamber is important when deciding on the material selection for the different areas and locations to be protected. The output of this study is therefore interesting for further design consideration of superheaters as well as for future planning of exposures.

  • New weldable 316L stainless flux-cored wires with reduced Cr(VI) fume emissions : part 2—round robin creating fume emission data sheets
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Welding in the World. - : Springer Nature. - 0043-2288 .- 1878-6669. ; 65:12, s. 2339-2348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Welding fumes have been found to be carcinogenic and stainless steel welders may be at higher risk due to increased formation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The slag-shielded methods, identified to generate most airborne particles and Cr(VI), would potentially be most harmful. With ever-stricter limits set to protect workers, measures to minimize human exposure become crucial. Austenitic stainless steel flux-cored wires of 316L type have been developed with the aim to reduce the toxicity of the welding fume without compromised usability. Collected particles were compared with fumes formed using solid, metal-cored, and standard flux-cored wires. In part 1, the new wires were concluded to have improved weldability, to generate even less Cr(VI) in wt.-% than with solid wire and to be less acute toxic in cultured human bronchial epithelial cells as compared to standard flux-cored wires. In part 2, two additional institutes created fume emission datasheets for the same wires for correlation with the fume data obtained in part 1. The reported values showed large variations between the three laboratories, having a significant effect on the standard deviation. This is suggested to be the result of different welding parameters and various ways to collect and analyze the fume. More stringent specifications on parameter settings and fume collection would be required to increase the accuracy. This means that at present, it may not be possible to compare fume data on datasheets from two different wire producers and care should be taken in interpretation of values given in the available literature. Nevertheless, the laboratories confirmed the same trends for Cr(VI) as presented in part 1.
