  • Promoting basic arithmetic competence in early school years - using a response to intervention model
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1471-3802. ; 23:4, s. 263-388
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated whether mathematics education based on a multi-tiered response to intervention (RTI) model can support students' arithmetic competence in primary schools in Sweden. The intent was to identify and support students at risk of failure. In this study, 113 students participated in the intervention, and 30 students participated in the control group. Both groups were followed from Grade 1 to the end of Grade 2 and compared. During the first semester in Grade 1, all students were taught basic addition and subtraction with explicit instructions in Tier 1. Those who did not respond to Tier 1 after one semester were provided support within Tier 2 during the second semester. The same was repeated in grade 2 and the students that did not respond to Tier 2 were supported within Tier 3. At the end of Grade 2, students in the intervention group performed significantly higher on the basic arithmetic competence in the number range 1-9 than the control group. No significant difference was found in a test measuring basic arithmetic competence in the number range 10-19. This study shows that using multi-tiered RTI might be sufficient to identify and support students at risk in early arithmetic competence.

  • Superintendent in Sweden : structures, cultural relations and leadership
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic superintendents. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319251042 - 9783319251066 ; , s. 139-173
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter looks at who superintendents in Sweden are – what roles they have, what they do, whom they contact, what positions they hold and their everyday work. We have gathered all of this information through many years of data collection from various surveys sent out to superintendents, school leaders, and chairs and members of school boards. Superintendents' roles differ both within Sweden as well as across borders with our neighboring Nordic countries. Superintendents as a group seem enthusiastic about educational matters, the development of schools and the educational sector, but they sometimes feel distracted by budgets and financial matters, as well as by political issues with their superiors and boards.

  • Beyond Post-productivism : From Rural Policy Discource to Rural Diversity
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: European Countryside. - Berlin : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1803-8417. ; 6:4, s. 297-306
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There has been a strong discourse in public policy aimed at transforming rural places from venues of primary production into truly diverse socioeconomic landscapes. Yet conceptualisations of the rural as envisioned in the policy and politics of the ‘new economy’ often prove to be elusive on the ground. However, post-productive activity in rural areas has become a major focus for rural studies scholars. This paper investigates the ideas of post-productivism in the existing literature, and argues for a holistic understanding of post-productivism as an idea and political ambition rather than an imperative and irreversible change of rural economic activity. The purpose of the study is to make clear the division between post-productivism and the related concepts of post-production and post-productive activities in order to better understand processes of rural change in relation to different geographical contexts. It is argued that post-productivism as a concept stands apart from de facto post-production and alternative concepts such as multifunctionality and should be regarded as part of broader regional development discourses. The paper outlines several important fields in which post-productivism is a necessary component for rural transformation and development. While it is not always easily captured in indicators or empirical studies in rural locations, post- productivism exists at the level of discourse and planning and thus has real effects on the ground. The paper concludes by offering suggestions on how to apply the concepts of post-productivism, post-production and multifunctionality in future studies.

  • A Systematic Review of Longitudinal Trajectories of Mental Health Problems in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Developmental and Physical Disabilities. - : Springer. - 1056-263X .- 1573-3580. ; 36, s. 203-242
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To review the longitudinal trajectories - and the factors influencing their development - of mental health problems in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. Systematic review methods were employed. Searches of six databases used keywords and MeSH terms related to children with neurodevelopmental disabilities, mental health problems, and longitudinal research. After the removal of duplicates, reviewers independently screened records for inclusion, extracted data (outcomes and influencing factors), and evaluated the risk of bias. Findings were tabulated and synthesized using graphs and a narrative. Searches identified 94,662 unique records, from which 49 publications were included. The median publication year was 2015. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder were the most commonly included population in retrieved studies. In almost 50% of studies, trajectories of mental health problems changed by < 10% between the first and last time point. Despite multiple studies reporting longitudinal trajectories of mental health problems, greater conceptual clarity and consideration of the measures included in research is needed, along with the inclusion of a more diverse range of populations of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

  • OMNIBUS NEWS: Engagement or bussed?
  • 2015
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • During the summer of 2013 the municipal public bus system, Karlstadbuss, installed television sets (BUSS-TV) on all city buses. These TV sets are airing user-generated content, and traffic information, weather forecasts as well as news from the hybrid commercial/public service broadcaster TV4. This paper addresses the phenomenon from the theoretical intersection of communication geography and journalism studies. This means understanding the city-buses, at once mobile and semi-public spaces, as decorated with a new “communicative texture” that is renegotiating the time-space nexus traditionally tied to news consumption. Furthermore, it potentially implies that a basic news diet become more or less dispersed amongst commuters across the city, and across previous class-demarcations that would engender divergent news diets. This constitutes a potential challenge to the notion of the fragmented news audience and related worries over the increased number of “news avoiders”. From previous research we know that news consumption, even accidental, is linked with political and civic engagement. In an era where media consumption is increasingly fragmented or even avoided, the buss-news reinstalls the almost inescapable news of the 1970’s albeit in a highly situated and limited context. Nevertheless, this new space of ‘news on the move’ is yet to be explored theoretically and empirically. Thus, we ask about the role of Karlstadbuss as a carrier of omnibus news in the media ecology. The paper uses data derived from representative surveys (Värmlands-SOM) conducted before (2010) and after (2014) the introduction of BUSS-TV to study the impact of travelling with the city-buses on political interest and civic engagement as well as general news interest and consumption.

  • Awarding a Community Membership Badge - Teachers’ Development of Digital Competences in a cMOOC
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Lecture Notes in Computer Science: 7th International Workshop on Social and Personal Computing for Web-Supported Learning Communities, SPeL 2014, 1st International Workshop on Peer-Review, Peer-Assessment, and Self-Assessment in Education, PRASAE 2014, 2014 International Workshop on Mobile and Personalized Learning, IWMPL 2014, 1st International Workshop on Open Badges in Education, OBIE 2014, 4th International Symposium on Knowledge Management & E-Learning, KMEL 2014 and Future of e-Textbooks W. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 0302-9743. - 9783319132952
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article the badge given in connection with a cMOOC designed by and for teachers is explored. Digitala skollyftet aimed to raise the digital competence amongst teachers in Swedish schools. The participants in Digitala skollyftet could apply to be awarded a badge for their participation. The awarding process, as well as the participation, of a small group of people who were awarded badges is analysed. Blog-posts were taken as evidence when applying for badges and blogging thereby became an important way to participate. Blogs can be regarded as exhibition spaces where the blogger exhibits and reflects on their learning process. Results show that there is a difference in how the blogs are designed, depending on the level of experience from the blogger. To a large extent, forums, such as Facebook and Twitter, are used as performance spaces, which facilitate the interaction and discussion with other participants.
