    • Much efforts have been put to elaborate and improve different high precision measurement schemes for characterization of advanced photonic devices and optical fibers with increasing bandwidth requirements. In light of this, swept-wavelength interferometry and dual-comb spectroscopy have been extensively applied in characterization procedures. In this paper we present in detail an experimental scheme that combines these two techniques and overcomes their limitations by using a tunable laser source in order to sweep over the frequency comb spacing and capture all intermediate frequencies. We demonstrate full-field broadband measurements over 1.25 THz comb bandwidth with increased frequency resolution, which can be performed in only 5 ms sweep. We also show that the nonlinearity of the laser sweep can be removed without an auxiliary interferometer in the setup.

    • Phase-sensitive optical parametric amplifiers (PSAs) can provide low-noise optical amplification while simultaneously mitigating nonlinear distortions caused by the Kerr effect. However, nonlinearity mitigation using PSAs is affected by link parameters, and imperfect link design results in residual nonlinear distortions. In this paper, we use first-order perturbation theory to describe these residual nonlinear distortions, and develop a way to mitigate them using a modified third-order Volterra nonlinear equalizer (VNLE) in the receiver. Using numerical simulations, we show that our proposed VNLE reduces the residual nonlinear distortions in links using in-line PSAs for several combinations of symbol rates and modulation formats, and can increase the maximum transmission distance by up to 80%. We also perform a proof-of-concept experiment and confirm that our modified VNLE can mitigate the residual nonlinear distortions on a 10-Gbaud 16QAM signal after transmission through a 10×80-km link with in-line PSAs.

    • We investigate combining phase-sensitive optical amplifiers (PSAs) with a static Volterra nonlinear equalizer (VNLE) to mitigate residual nonlinear distortions. Experiments show that the VNLE reduces penalties from link design and improves QBER by 0.4 dB for a 10-GBaud 16QAM signal in a 10×80-km PSA-amplified link.

    • Digital back propagation (DBP) is often proposed and implemented offline for the mitigation of nonlinear impairments in long-haul fiber communications. However, complexity in terms of chip area and power consumption in a realistic application-specific integrated circuit implementation is yet to be determined. Here, we implement time-domain DBP (TD-DBP) in a 28-nm fully-depleted silicon-on-insulator process technology, considering digital implementation aspects such as limited-resolution arithmetic and finite-length filters. We choose as example a coherent optical transmission system, viz. a single-channel, single-polarization, and 20-GBd 16-QAM system, for which the DBP is known to perform well. For the considered system, we find that the TD-DBP can enable a reach increase from 3400 to 5300 km, at a power dissipation of <20 W (or, conversely, an energy dissipation of <230 pJ/bit), at a pre-FEC BER of 10-2.
