  • Peer-review-based examination in a PhD-level course: ”Introduction to Research” at the Sahlgrenska Academy, Gothenburg University, Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Writing Across the Curriculum, Ann Arbor 2016.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Early during PhD education, the Sahlgrenska Academy students across the health sciences take the course ”Introduction to Research” aimed to i) integrate the teaching of Theory of Science, Research Ethics, Research Methodology, Scientific Communication, and Information Retrieval using one, integrated examination assignment, and ii) utilize the different backgrounds and research areas of the students for peer development. Groups of four PhD students conduct a peer-review process comprising each student’s research plan with a commentary reflecting on the course subjects in relation to each student’s project. Workshops are provided to support the writing and peer-review processes. After three weeks of classroom-based teaching, students update their research plan and write a reflective commentary. Each student peer-reviews the documents of their group peers, giving feedback on content, style, and organization. For the final revision, students thus have to consider the feedback of three peers. Each student evaluates her/his own performance and learning, peer-review skills, feedback received, research plan improvements, and the group’s work.We evaluate the outcome of the examination assignment by analysis of the PhD students’ written reflections that are part of the assignment. Students appreciate the opportunity to re-evaluate their research plan and get multi-perspective feedback on it. They also find writing the commentary challenging and that the research plans get more realistic and structured. The literature on peer response as a learning activity is substantial but there is less work published on PhD-peer processes to promote learning and we hope this presentation offers a venue to explore such a discussion.

  • Reduction of early surgical site and other care related infections in 3553 hip fracture patients : lessons learned from the 5-year Safe Hands project
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2047-2994. ; 11:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) after acute hip fracture surgery is a devastating complication associated with increased suffering and mortality. The aim of the study was to investigate early SSI, sepsis, pneumonia and urinary tract infections over five years, before and after the implementation of the Safe Hands project. Methods: This was a single-centre observational study with a 5-year longitudinal design, investigating the effects of an infection-prevention intervention targeting the clinical care pathway of individuals with acute hip fracture. Statistical analyses were based on routinely collected patient outcome data comprising 3553 patients. The study conforms to the criteria of the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE). Results: The incidence of early SSIs decreased from 2.5% in years 1–2 to 1.1% in years 4–5. Similar results were observed for sepsis (2.7% to 1.3%) and urinary tract infections (14.2% to 4.2%). The multivariable regression results suggest that, for every observed year, the odds of early SSIs decreased. Male gender, procedure time, sepsis and preoperative skin damage increased the odds significantly. Conclusions: Our preventive bundle, based on partnership between researchers, managers and clinicians and a strong commitment to change from the involved professions, appear to be effective in reducing the frequency of potentially devastating SSIs and other hospital acquired infections after hip fracture surgery. The use of external and internal facilitators was crucial to enable individual and organisational learning and overcoming barriers to improvements. Trial registration: Clinical Trials.gov ID: NCT02983136 Registered 6 December 2016—Retrospectively registered.

  • Peer-review-based examination of the PhD course ”Introduction to Research” at the Sahlgrenska Academy
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: NU2012 Conference Proceedings.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: The Sahlgrenska Academy accepts around 90 new PhD students in medicine, odontology, health care sciences, and pharmacology, each semester. Early during PhD education, the students take the course ”Introduction to Research”. During spring of 2012, part of this course is given in a new format, with the goals to i) integrate the teaching of Theory of Science, Research Ethics, Research Methodology, Scientific Communication, and Information Retrieval, using one, integrated examination assignment, and ii) utilize the different backgrounds and research areas of the students for peer development. Aim: We aim to evaluate the outcome of the new examination assignment, primarily by analysis of the PhD students’ written reflections that are part of the assignment. Approach: The PhD students are divided into groups of four, mixing students of different educations, occupations, research cultures, and methodological knowledge. The groups conduct a peer-review process comprising each student’s research plan with a commentary reflecting on the course subjects (above) in relation to the student’s own project. Workshops are provided to support the writing and peer-review processes. Initially, the students read each other’s original research plans within the group, give oral feedback, and write a reflection. After the classroom-based teaching (three weeks), students update their research plan and write their commentary. Each student peer-reviews the documents of their group peers, giving feedback on content, style, and organization. For the final revision, students have to consider feedback of three peers. They also write a reflection on their given feedback. Finally, each student evaluates her/his own performance and learning, received feedback, research plan improvements, and the group’s work. Preliminary results: Student reflections from the initial oral feedback suggest that they appreciate the opportunity to reevaluate their research plan, they get other comments and suggestions than expected due to varying student backgrounds, and they feel secure and confident within their groups. The research plans and commentaries are not all submitted yet, but early submissions suggest that the students find writing the commentary challenging and that the research plans get more realistic and structured. The course evaluation data to date suggest that students either enjoy the novel format and the challenge thereof or find it too time consuming and irrelevant. Discussion: The literature on peer response as a learning activity is substantial but there is less work published on PhD-peer processes to promote learning and we hope this presentation offers a venue to explore such a discussion.

  • Attempts to share information between public sector organisations over time : A case-based exploration of value conflicts
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Information Polity. - : IOS Press. - 1570-1255 .- 1875-8754. ; 26:3, s. 289-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite the importance of inter-organisational information sharing (IOIS) in the public sector, such endeavours often fail. Existing research has shown that the values held by collaborating organisations are one important factor affecting these kinds of initiatives. However, research has sought only to a limited extent to address how value conflicts come into play over time. Therefore, this paper aims to explore how conflicting values shape an inter-organisational information-sharing practice in the public sector over time. Using the local/global network framework, we analyse four years’ worth of information sharing in an inter-organisational advisory group in the context of Swedish nuclear waste management. We conclude that different value conflicts are emphasised to different extents at different points in time. That is, values do not uniformly affect IOIS activities, and such conflicts over time reduce the set of potential IOIS activities. We also conclude that when IOIS activities are driven by an individual organisation’s values, individual value rational activities may co-exist with a dysfunctional long-term IOIS practice.

  • Inter-organisational information sharing : Between a rock and a hard place
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the Ninth International Symposium on Human Aspects of Information  Security & Assurance (HAISA 2015). - Plymouth UK : Plymouth University. - 9781841023885 ; , s. 71-81
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although inter-organisational collaboration is common, most information security (IS) research has focused on IS issues within organisations. Confidentiality, integrity of data and availability (CIA) and responsibility, integrity of role, trust, and ethicality (RITE) are two sets of principles for managing IS that have been developed from an intra-organisational, rather static, perspective. The aim of this paper is thus to investigate the relation between the CIA and RITE principles in the context of an inter-organisational collaboration, i.e., collaboration between organisations. To this end we investigated inter-organisational collaboration and information sharing concerning Swedish cooper corrosion research in the field a long-term nuclear waste disposal. We found that in an inter-organisational context, responsibility, integrity of role and ethicality affected the CIA-principles, which in turn affected the collaborating actors’ trust in each other over time.
