Investigating the haptic aspects of verbalised product experiences

- The human senses play an important role in people's understanding and experience of products. The overall aim of this explorative study was to further investigate users' haptic product experiences in respect of how they are verbalised and how they relate to visual product experiences. The pilot studies revealed an important result, showing the participants' difficulty in verbalising product experiences. A mediating tool was therefore introduced to trigger the information. The main results of the study are that haptic product experiences appeared to contribute to all experience dimensions, but especially those concerning the dimensions "interface qualities" and "objective/ measurable". The results indicate that the information received from one sense created expectations for experiences through other senses and the information perceived through the second sense was used to confirm or modify anticipated experiences. The less prior knowledge participants had of the particular product, the more important the additional information delivered through the second sense appeared to be. Finally, haptic product experiences appeared to be related to a few haptic product properties, but more systematic studies need to be carried out to confirm these results and to identify the effect of the product properties on the intensity of different haptic product experiences.

Linjekartan. En värdering av tre linjekartor ur ett resenärsperspektiv.

- Syftet med studien var att utvärdera tre olika utformningar av linjekartor med avseende på linjekartans innehåll och kartans grafiska utformning. Arton försökspersoner deltog i utvärderingen. Försökspersonerna ställdes inför olika uppgifter (identifiera resväg, identifiera bytepunkt etc.). Objektiva kriterier var tid (för att besvara en fråga) och korrekthet (rätt svar på frågan). En av de tre kartorna, en stiliserad karta, var den karta som som krävde kortast tid för att identifiera sökt information. Beroende på uppgiften varierade andelen korrekta svar beroende på typ av karta men som helhet resulterade den stiliserade kartan i flest korrekta svar. Försökspersonerna fick också ange hur säkra/osäkra de var att de kommit fram till 'korrekt svar'. Säkerheten skattades högst vid användning av den stiliserade kartan och lägst vid användning av en karta med mer realistisk avbildning av vägnät, etc. 17 av de 18 föredrog också den stiliserade kartan. Tydlighet och enkelhet bedömdes viktigare än ett större informationsinnehåll.

Passenger Information Design: A Systems Approach

- The paper describes the results of and experiences from the project "Passenger Information - Needs and Requirements", part of the R&D program GoTIC (Gothenburg Traffic Information Centre). One conclusion is that a passenger information system needs to be based on three basic functions: A communicative function (to help passengers recognise different information artefacts in the system), a pedagogical function (to enable passengers to quickly learn and be acquanted with the information system), and an operational function (to reduce uncertainty felt by passengers when faced with situations involving a choice). The purpose of information is reduction of uncertainty. By focusing on information as reduction of uncertainty, the individual passenger (user of information) and his/her conscious and unconscious questions provide the basis for the design of the information system.

Application of agent-based simulation for evaluating a bus layout design from passengers' perspective

- This paper shows that agent based simulation can evaluate the performance of different bus layout designs from passengers’ perspective, thus helping bus manufacturers to design new layouts that are more attractive for passengers. Including agent-based simulation in the bus design process is an inexpensive and efficient procedure to evaluate new design concepts (wheel-well position, number of doors, etc.) in relation to the preferences, needs and expectations of current and future passengers. Its main advantage is that these new design concepts are evaluated well before manufacturing the first physical prototype. Bus passengers are modelled and simulated as autonomous agents. Eight different types of passengers, which were elaborated from observations of actual passengers, have been modelled. Passengers’ preferences and features have been implemented using a calibrated making decision algorithm. The paper also presents two case-studies to analyse the sensitivity of the performance of two different bus layouts with different number and distributions of passengers.
