  • Impact on rutting from introduction of increased axle loads in Finland
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The international journal of pavement engineering. - : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 1029-8436 .- 1477-268X.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In 2013, Finland introduced legislation increasing gross vehicle weights (GVW) on a number of trucks. Since the actual impact on road damage is nearly impossible to quantify in advance, the present analysis of road surface measurements is intended to provide knowledge regarding the impact on road damage. Rutting is influenced by many conflated phenomena. To indicate and capture the effect on road damage due to the new maximum GVW for certain truck- and trailer combinations, the analysis follows two different but mutually supporting lines of reasoning, empirical and theoretical, respectively. Analysis of measured rut depth is supported by theoretical calculations. Theoretical findings clearly indicate that the relative increase in road damage induced by higher GVW is larger than the increase in relative payload capacity. There was a rapid fleet shift towards heavier trucks after 2013, and statistical (empirical) analysis of road surface measurements shows an increase in rutting after this introduction.

  • Fatigue modeling as related to flexible pavement design - State of the art
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Road Materials and Pavement Design. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0629 .- 2164-7402. ; 8:2, s. 165-205
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A literature study of rheological and fatigue modeling of asphalt mixtures is presented. Theoretical aspects on structural modeling, rheological behavior and the fatigue integration in design procedures are reviewed In principle, pavement design methods can be categorized in three broad groups: empirical, semi-mechanistic and fully mechanistic methods. Pavement design is generally performed using semi-mechanistic methods comprising analytical or numerical structural response models and deterioration modeling based on transfer functions and shift factors. In the case of fatigue deterioration, several approaches have been elaborated e.g. classical models, fracture mechanics and damage mechanics. The approaches differ regarding theoretical foundation and evaluation methods used. Recognizing significant limitations concerning theoretical basis as well as lack of empirical support for current design methods, a shift in paradigm from semi-empirical methods towards more advanced fully mechanistic methods have been initiated. According to this approach, improved pavements are achieved by appropriate design methods which are capable of predicting fatigue resistance in the actual pavement environment, and thus taking into account complex stress conditions, influence of temperature and material characteristics, such as aging and healing.

  • Influence of pavement materials on field performance : Evaluation of rutting on flexible semi-rigid and rigid test sections after 7 years of service
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal on Road Materials and Pavement Design. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1468-0629 .- 2164-7402. ; 10:4, s. 689-713
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents results obtained so far from a Swedish full-scale test, comprising in total 19 different rigid, semi-rigid and flexible test stretches. The purpose is to compare rutting performance of the different pavement categories and types using extensive laboratory tests and field measurements after seven years of trafficking. The rigid pavements withstand rutting better than the two other pavement categories due to comparably small abrasion and negligible permanent deformation. The semi-rigid pavements show less rutting than the flexible pavements, which primarily is the result of the negligible permanent deformation in the cement bound layers. Even though the rigid pavements show very small rutting, it is probably not the main distress type and the primary trigger for maintenance activities for this pavement type. In the case of semi-flexible and flexible pavements, both laboratory tests and field measurements indicate that significantly improved rutting performance can be obtained using appropriate asphalt mixtures manufactured using wear-resistant aggregates and stiff binder.

  • Cooperative Spectrum Sharing and Device-to-Device Communications
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The steep growth in the mobile data traffic has gained a lot of attention in recent years. This growth is mainly the result of emerging applications, multimedia services, and revolutions in the device technology. With current deployments and radio resources, operators will not be able to cope with the growing demands. Consequently, there is a need to either provide new resources or increase the efficiency of what is available. Proposed solutions for accommodating growing data traffic are based on improvements in three dimensions: efficient use of radio resources especially the spectrum, technology advancements, and densifying the current infrastructure. In this thesis, we focus on the spectrum dimension. Providing more spectrum is a long-term process. However, increasing the spectrum usage and efficiency can be put rapidly in practice. We discuss potential solutions in the area of spectrum sharing. Among enabling technologies to facilitate spectrum sharing, we consider the cognitive radio and device-to-device (D2D) communications. In order to gain from sharing the spectrum, systems need to somehow deal with extra sources of interference. In the first part of the thesis, we consider a primary-secondary sharing model in cognitive radio networks. We employ the cooperative communication method in order to facilitate the access of the secondary system to the licensed spectrum of the primary system, and therefore increase the spectrum usage. The cooperation between the two systems is formed provided that it is beneficial for the primary system. In this way, the primary users' quality-of-service can be preserved while at the same time the secondary users can access the spectrum. This cooperative approach prevents both systems from concurrent transmissions. As a consequence, the need for interference control techniques are eliminated. We evaluate different models and transmission schemes and optimize the corresponding parameters to quantify the gain resulting from cooperative spectrum sharing. In the second part of the thesis, we consider spectrum sharing within one system between different types of users. This is done in the context of D2D communications where close proximity users can transmit directly to each other. For this type of communications, either dedicated resources are allocated or resources of the cellular users are reused. We first study the feasibility of cooperation between D2D and cellular users and identify the scenarios where it can be beneficial. Then we take on a challenging problem which guarantees the gain from the D2D communication, namely the mode selection. For this problem, we characterize the decision criteria that determines if D2D communication is gainful. Next, we focus on the problem of interference in D2D communications underlaying cellular networks, where the same spectrum is reused in the spatial domain. In such scenarios, the potential gain is determined by how the interference is managed, which in turn depends on the amount of available information at the base station. The more information is required, the more signaling is needed. In this part of the thesis, we address the trade-off between the signaling overhead and the performance of the system and propose a novel approach for interference control which requires very little information on the D2D users.

  • On-line Powerplant Control using Near-InfraRed Spectroscopy : OPtiC-NIRS, REPORT 2021:746
  • 2021
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Near InfraRed Spectroscopy (NIRS) offers rapid on-line analysis of biomass feedstocks and can be utilized for process control of biomass- based combined heat and power plants. Within the OPtiC-NIRS project we have carried out a full-scale on-site testing of different NIRS for online powerplant control at the facilities of Mälarenergi and Eskilstuna Strängnäs Energi och Miljö. The project has been focused on developing and testing robust NIRS soft-sensors for fuel higher heating value and composition (incl. moisture, components such as recycle wood and glass, different type of plastics and ash) and combining them with dynamic models for on-line feed-forward process monitoring and control. Expected benefits include reduced risk of agglomeration and pollutant emissions formation as well as improved production control. A longer-term potential and ambition is to be able to identify the fossil content in municipal waste fuel, which can hopefully be addressed in a follow-up study.

  • New Experimental and Modelling Tools for Multiscale Characterization of Asphalt Mastic
  • 2020
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Asphalt mastics act as a binding phase in asphalt mixtures and their rheological properties strongly affect the performance of asphalt mixtures with respect to virtually all damage modes. In order to measure mastics properties, relevant for field performance, testing should be performed at size-scales representative for the morphology and material inhomogeneity of asphalt mixtures. This thesis aims to contribute to solving these important issues by developing new experimental and modelling tools for the multi-scale characterization of asphalt mastics. An instrumented indentation test for viscoelastic characterization of asphalt mastics is proposed as a new alternative to existing techniques. A methodology for spherical indentation testing of bituminous materials is developed allowing measuring their viscoelastic properties at arbitrary non-decreasing loading. The potential of indentation tests for multi-scale measurements of viscoelastic properties of binder-aggregate composites is investigated for the special case of asphalt mortar, composed of mastic and aggregates smaller than 2.36 mm. The effect of the test parameters on the measured apparent shear relaxation modulus of asphalt mortar is evaluated. Experimental and modelling results indicate that the measurement scale in the indentation tests can be controlled efficiently by testing with different indenter-specimen contact areas. Accordingly, indentation tests may be used for reliable viscoelastic characterization of binder-aggregate composites on macro-scale as well as on the mastic phase level. It may thus potentially provide a relatively simple tool for measuring viscoelastic properties of mastics in situ in asphalt mixtures. In order to establish a quantitative link between material design parameters of mastics and its rheology, a new finite element (FE) micromechanical modelling approach has been developed. It allows predicting the viscoelastic properties of bitumen-filler mastic from its volumetric, mechanical and geometrical design parameters. The influence of modelling parameters on the model’s accuracy is evaluated and optimal parameter combinations are identified. The model is validated with the measurements performed on several mastics and for a range of volumetric concentration of filler. It is shown that the proposed model can capture the measured viscoelastic behaviour of mastics for the examined range of loading, temperature and material parameters. Accordingly, it may be a useful tool for optimizing mastics material design for the target viscoelastic properties.

  • In Situ H2 Reduction of Al2O3-Supported Ni- and Mo-Based Catalysts
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Catalysts. - : MDPI. - 2073-4344. ; 12:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Nickel (Ni)-promoted Molybdenum (Mo)-based catalysts are used for hydrotreatment processes in the chemical industry where the catalysts are exposed to high-pressure H2 at elevated temperature. In this environment, the catalyst transforms into the active phase, which involves the reduction of the oxide. Here, we report on the first in situ study on the reduction of alumina supported Ni- and Mo-based catalysts in 1 mbar H2 using ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (APXPS). The study confirms that mixing Ni and Mo lowers the reduction temperature of both Ni- and Mo-oxide as compared to the monometallic catalysts and shows that the MoO3 reduction starts at a lower temperature than the reduction of NiO in NiMo/Al2O3 catalysts. Additionally, the reduction of Ni and Mo foil was directly compared to the reduction of the Al2O3-supported catalysts and it was observed that the reduction of the supported catalysts is more gradual than the reduction of the foils, indicating a strong interaction between the Ni/Mo and the alumina support. © 2022 by the authors.
