  • Water Fountain Sources Monitored in FLASHING

    • We have investigated the spectral evolutions of H2O and SiO masers associated with 12 water fountain sources in our FLASHING (Finest Legacy Acquisitions of SiO-/H2O-maser Ignitions by Nobeyama Generation) project. Our monitoring observations have been conducted using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope every 2 weeks-2 months since 2018 December except during summer seasons. We have found new extremely high velocity H2O maser components, breaking the records of jet speeds in this type of sources. Systematic line-of-sight velocity drifts of the H2O maser spectral peaks have also been found, indicating acceleration of the entrained material hosting the masers around the jet. Moreover, by comparing with previous spectral data, we can find decadal growths/decays of H2O maser emission. Possible periodic variations of the maser spectra are further being inspected in order to explore the periodicity of the central stellar system (a pulsating star or a binary). Thus we expect to see the real-time evolution/devolutions of the water fountains over decades.

    • A new generation of sub-millimeter-wave receivers employing sensitive SIS (Superconductor-Insulator- Superconductor) detector technology will provide new opportunities for precise passive remote sensing observation of minor constituents in atmosphere. Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES) was designed to be onbord the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) on the International Space Station (ISS) as a collaboration project of National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). SMILES scheduled to be launch in September 11, 2009 by the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV). Mission Objectives are: i) Space demonstration of superconductive mixer and 4-K mechanical cooler for the submillimeter limb emission sounding, and ii) global observations of atmospheric minor constituents. JEM/SMILES will allow to observe the atmospheric species such as O3, H35Cl, H37 Cl, ClO, BrO, HOCl, HO2, and HNO3, CH3CN, and Ozone isotope species with the precisions in a few to several tens percents from upper troposphere to the mesosphere. We have estimated the observation capabilities of JEM/SMILES. This new technology may allow us to open new issues in atmospheric science.

    • The Odin Sub-Millimetre Radiometer (SMR) measures thermal emission lines of several minor ozone isotopologues such as symmetric and asymmetric O3-18 and asymmetric O3-17 at the atmospheric limb. The global data set spans over 11 years starting in late 2001. The basic characteristics and limitations of the observational data are presented and the global distribution of heavy ozone isotopologue enrichment as seen by Odin is described and discussed. Best results in terms of spatial coverage are obtained for asymmetric O3-18, which shows a characteristic increase of the enrichment in the middle to upper stratosphere and the smallest enrichment in the polar lower stratosphere. Symmetric O3-18 is characterised by a layer of maximum enrichment in the middle stratosphere.
